HOVERMANIA

INTRODUCTION
The idea of being one among the designing brains behind the huge hovercrafts seen on lands and seas has always been one of the dreams of a budding mechanical engineer. Just buckle up and bring forth your design quotient. This time MECHARENA 2K13 presents the ultimate hovercraft design competition Bring on the gaming devil inside you; beat the hell out of the friction. And there you go! Design a RC Hovercraft capable of handling its way out through any terrain..! What are you waiting for? Come be a part of the event and showcase the hidden 'engineering' prowess in you.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Design a RC Hovercraft or ACV(Air Cushion Vehicle) capable to knock its way out through various terrains like sand, mud, water, gravel, concrete etc., and is tested for speed , maneuverability and handling. It requires the participant to build a radio controlled hovercraft that could complete the specified track in the least possible time.

TEAM
1. Each team can have a maximum of 5 members. 2. A participant cannot be a member of more than one team participating in this event. 3. Participants must have a valid identification card of their college

HOVERCRAFT SPECIFICATIONS 1) DIMENSIONS: LENGTH: MAX 50 cms ; BREADTH: MAX 50 cms ;

MIN 20 cms MIN 20 cms

HEIGHT: NO CONSTRAINTS
(Note: The above mentioned dimensions are meant only for the hull of the hovercraft and do not include the skirt surrounding it) 2) The hovercraft should be motor powered [Use of IC (Internal Combustion) engines is strictly prohibited] 3) The voltage of the battery should not be more than 12 Volts DC 4) The hovercraft can have separate power source for lift and propulsion (E.g. your hovercraft can have two electric motors, one motor will be used for lift and the other will be used propulsion.) 5) Hovercraft must have only one power source for propulsion (i.e., one electric motor) 6) Hovercraft must have only one power source for lift (i.e., one electric motor) 7) In addition to the power sources for the lift and propulsion you may use DC motors or servo motors for rudder controller.

Fabrication
1) The hull and skirt used for the hovercraft should be fabricated yourself. 2) It is advisable to use Light weight materials for making the HULL (E g. Balsa wood, FRP, plastics, foam etc) 3) It is advisable to use Air proof materials for making the SKIRT (E.g. rubber, umbrella cloth etc.) 4) Any Ready-Made Components, if found, as a part of the hull or the skirt the team will be DISQUALIFIED. 5) Propeller, Remote control, Servo Motors and Electronic Circuits can be taken directly from other models.

GENERAL RULES
1) The hovercraft must be maneuvered by a wireless remote control (The controls may be for basic functions like steering, or even for more advanced ones like throttle control) 2) It is advised that the teams make a rudder for controlling the direction of the hovercraft. (If the hovercraft hits the side walls (boundary) or a person or another hovercraft, it can potentially damage the hovercraft/boundary/person. If the hovercraft does not

have control over its direction or found unsafe to run on the track, that team will be DISQUALIFIED from the race) 3) Participants will be given time slots for practice before the event. Exact time and date will be updated soon on the website 4) If you have any doubts regarding the hovercraft specifications or rules or if your hovercraft uses different components or concepts, which the problem statement does not specify, please contact the coordinators to confirm the validity of the same. Do not

assume anything yourself.

5) Judges decision shall be final and binding to the participants at the any point of time. 6) Judges reserve the exclusive rights to disqualify any team indulging in misbehavior.

The coordinators reserve the right to change a part or whole of the specifications and rules mentioned above. Changes, if any, will be updated in the website.

NOTE:THERE WILL BE TOTAL OF TWO (2) ROUNDS IN THE EVENT AND THE TRACKS WILL BE DISCLOSED DIRECTLY AT THE ARENA ITSELF.

JUDGING CRITERIA
Lap time:Where t+2*n t -> actual time taken to complete the track n -> no. of times hovercraft is REALIGNED on the track
