Crimes reported in this area recently

Earlsway - Digital cameras and an Apple
Macbook were stolen in a house burglary.
Stanley Park Drive A lock was
broken off a back garden shed but nothing
was stolen.
River Lane Thieves removed rear fre
door to enter business premises, then broke
through a wall into another shop before
stealing a safe.
Carrick Road - Champagne and other
items were stolen from a house after the
back door was left unlocked.
Boundary Lane - White gloss paint was
poured over the bonnet of vehicle parked on

2012 was an exceptional year for
Handbridge Shotokan Karate Club.
Building on the frm foundations set by
its chief instructor, Sensei Mike OConnor
6th Dan, a sister club was formed and
opened in January, at Westminster Park
Community Centre. This was soon to be
followed by yet another
venue at Westminster
Park Scout Hall. With
the additional training
times and venues the
club saw an immediate
infux of new beginners,
and this culminated in
many of these members
taking and passing their
6th Kyu gradings at the
beginning of December.
The frst senior
members eligible to
grade were Freddie
Tonkmor & Otto Blank.
Both men were hoping
to achieve the rank of
3rd Dan at a special Dan
course to be held on 6th
October in Bath.
Unlike subsequent
gradings, the grading
for 3rd Dan and above
is held behind closed
doors. Only the chief
instructor (Sensei Andy
Sherry, 8th Dan) and
his assistant on the day
(Sensei Bob Poynton,
7th Dan), along with the
clubs senior instructor
and the people grading
are allowed in the room.
Even at this senior
level there is no certain outcome, with
only approximately half of those grading
achieving a pass. But with their diligent
training with Sensei OConnor and the
regular visits to the club by both Sensei
Sherry and Sensei Frank Brennan, 7th Dan,
both men were ready, and
successfully achieved their
new 3rd Dan (Sandan)
grade.
Sunday 4th November saw
the turn of Darren Blythin
to try for his Nidan grade
(2nd Dan), at the special
Brown & Black Belt course
which was to be held in
Lichfeld. Once again the
club achieved success with
Darren passing his grading
for Nidan.
Training is available for
men, women and children
regardless of your present
level of ftness.
l 6pm to 7pm on
Mondays for Juniors and
lower grades.
l 7pm to 8:30pm Seniors,
plus any lower grades
wishing to train.

I am the new PCSO for Handbridge, I have worked for Cheshire Police
since 2007. Before being a PCSO I worked in the Force Control Room as a
call taker and radio operator for the Western area. I am looking forward to
working in Handbridge and meeting the residents.
Priorities for Handbridge
Local residents and people on the bus have reported children from Queens Park High
School, Handbridge committing anti social behaviour on the number 16 bus from the
Handbridge to Saltney.
As the new Handbridge Offcer PCSO Jenna Smith and PCSO Mckevitt are looking to
introduce a number of measures to combat these issues during January. These include
Offcers catching the number 16 bus when the children are catching the bus, speaking to
the bus company to ensure that the bus picking up the children is ftted with CCTV and the
school providing a presence around the bus stop.
Other priorities for Handbridge
Residents have reported drug deals occurring and vagrants hanging around the alleyway
between Queens Park Road and the suspension bridge toward the City. Continuation of
high visibility foot patrols by local Offcers during January. If any anti-social behaviour or
drug dealing is located the offenders will be dealt with appropriately.

QUEENS PARK HIGH SCHOOL
STuDEnTS at Queens Park High
School have been working intensively
on the schools next big production,
Disneys classic, Beauty and the
Beast.
With a cast, crew and band of well
over 100 students the production is
tipped to be the biggest and most
successful yet. It involves students
from Year 7 right the way through to
Year 13 and is an additional challenge
and experience in which they are all
brilliantly engaged.

students, the production utilises
skills that transcend the curriculum
and it provides and incredibly valuable learning experience that has a distinctively
measurable and worthwhile outcome. It is, as always, an absolute pleasure to work

The production runs from 12th to the 15th February. Tickets, are 6.50 each; with a
family ticket for the Tuesday production available at a cost of 20 (4 tickets - one of

In the 1950s a chicken used to be a real luxury meat
but has steadily evolved into a staple in a short
time. This is mainly to do with mass production
techniques, producing a full grown bird in a matter
of weeks. Sadly these mass produced birds are not
kept in the best conditions, are completely lacking
in flavour and all too often are pumped full of water,
by supermarkets looking to increase their profit
margins.
Quite recently I was asked by a customer why
I sold dinosaur sized chicken breasts? Puzzled
I asked what she meant. She said that the
supermarket ones which she had been buying
(before converting to a high street butcher) were
about a third of the size of mine. I explained that
a 7-8oz / 200g chicken breast came of a chicken
weighing 4Ib / 1.8kg which is a mature bird and that
the supermarket chicken breasts were cut from 2Ib
/ 1kg birds which were immature and had hardly
drawn breath.
The plain truth is that proper quality chicken is
available, does still have flavour and lends itself
rather well for any number of recipes. It can be
afordable and represents good value in the feeding
of a family in tough times. For example after
cooking a roast chicken dont be afraid the next day
to get your fingers greasy and strip every last bit of
meat of the carcass. Youll be amazed how much
chicken you can find on a seemingly stripped frame.
This is all usable meat for sandwiches, bubble and
squeak or wherever your imagination takes you.
This months recipe is for Basque-style Chicken
with garlic, bacon, tomatoes and peppers.
Serves 4
Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 1 hour
Ingredients:
4 large chicken portions
4 tablespoons of olive oil
6oz/170grams streaky bacon, diced
4 onions, sliced
3 garlic cloves, crushed
2 green peppers, deseeded and diced
teaspoon dried marjoram
14oz/420grams tomatoes, skinned and chopped, or
14oz can of tomatoes
150-300mls / - pint chicken stock
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Parsley to garnish
Recipe:
1. Heat the olive oil in a deep frying pan. Add your
diced bacon and saute gently, stirring occasionally,
until lightly browned. Remove the bacon from the
pan with a slotted spoon and keep warm.
2. Add the chicken portions to the pan and cook,
turning occasionally, until they are uniformly brown.
Remove with a slotted spoon and keep warm. Add
the onions and garlic and cook gently until soft and
golden. Add the peppers and marjoram, cover and
cook gently for 10 minutes.
3. Add the tomatoes and some stock (300ml/ pint if
you are using fresh tomatoes, or 150ml/ pint if you
are using canned tomatoes in juice). Season to taste
with salt and pepper. Return the chicken and bacon
to the pan, cover and cook gently for 40-45mins, or
until the chicken is cooked and tender.
4. Remove the chicken and transfer to a serving dish.
Boil the sauce gently to reduce if necessary, until it is
thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Adjust the
seasoning and pour over the chicken, sprinkle with
chopped parsley and serve.

Gymnastics Competition.
The girls had an extremely successful day winning both Year 8 and Year 9 Titles.
In the Year 8 competition

The GCSE PE group took to the walls at the Liverpool
Climbing Hangar.
This experience included three types of skills;
top rope climbing, bouldering and momentum and
footwork. To the uninitiated, the art of top rope
climbing is designed to allow students to use an
indoor facility safely and to its full potential. It sets the
foundations for students to progress further. They
learn to ft helmets and a harness, tie stopper knots
and to work out holds and plan their route during the
climb and abseil down.
The purpose of the experience was to open up the
experience of rock climbing to students who had not
done it before and to enable Mr Rhodes to collect
data for GCSE PE.

winter. if you do
not have any and
can fnd room for
them, go and buy
some from garden
centres as they will
fower year after
year.
There is scope for more
scent in the garden at
this time of year as many
shrubs have scented fowers
to attract the few pollinating
insects that are about. Try Daphne
mezureum, an upright shrub
with pink fowers or Daphne
odora Aureomarginata an
evergreen rounded shrub
with light yellow edges
to the leaves and pinkish
scented starry fowers.
Grow them in a sheltered
spot, avoid heavy clay
soils and place near a path
or door so you can beneft
from scent as you come and
go.
Hamamelis mollis or witch hazel
can be scented too and do best in light
shade with a neutral, moisture retentive, well
drained soil. In winter they have little spidery
fowers. For lovely fragrance try Hamamaelis x
intermedia Pallida with pale yellow fowers.
Another scented gem is Lonicera purpusii
Winter Beauty, one of the honeysuckle family.
Again it likes a lighter,
moisture retentive soil
but is hardy and will fll
a sheltered space with
scent. It is also good for
cutting stems for scent
in the house.
Prune apple and
pear trees by early
February. It is best
to do this before new
growth starts. With
established trees, cut
out any spindly, dead or
diseased shoots but leave
the main leaders (these are
the main shoots that grow
upwards) alone. If the tree gets
too tall, prune about half of
the leaders back to your
required height, then
the rest the following
year.
Finish pruning
roses before March,
cutting back hard to
outward facing buds
on newer growth. Cut
out spindly stems and
dead wood so you have
a framework of strong
stems from which new
growth develops.
Carefully cut or pull out dead stalks
from ornamental grasses. Fine grasses can be
combed with a spring tined rake. Grasses such
as Miscanthus or Stipa require dead stems to be
cut back near ground level but avoiding cutting
new growth.

King James I and thence the Jacobean period.
Fast forward 220 or so years in time. Had
members of the Privy Council and other so
called royal advisors achieved their way,
the young Princess Victoria, who was born
in 1819, may well have been entitled Queen
Elizabeth when she came to the throne in 1837
instead of Victoria, thereby creating the second
Elizabethan age instead of the Victorian era.
Still, whats in a name?
The naming of child at birth is an emotive
subject at the best of times, especially when
it comes to a potential future monarch!
For the young Princess, Christian names
such as Georgiana, Charlotte, Augusta and
Alexandrina were all considered and mostly
dismissed for various, personal reasons by
immediate members of the family. Her mother,
the Duchess of Kent, seemingly had no say
in the matter! Out of respect to the childs
godfather, Alexandra I, Tsar of Russia, she
was eventually christened Alexandrina Victoria
and came to be known for at least the frst
nine years of her life by the foreign diminutive
Drina.
By the age of 11, there was a move to
change her name to either Charlotte or
Elizabeth as it was thought Victoria did not
accord with the feelings of the English people.
So there we have it; in 1837 Victoria accedes
to the throne following the death of her uncle
King William IV. She was ecstatic at being able
to escape an over protective upbringing by her
mother and Sir John Conroy, controller of her
mothers household.
Prior to her elevation to becoming monarch,
the strict regime and protective nature of her
childhood are well known, but in her journals
she makes very little allusion to her cloistered
formative years.
Journal
In 1832 the young Princess, now aged 13,
is given a small octavo sized volume, half
bound in red morocco leather and being quite
plain. This is her frst journal of the many she
kept throughout her considerable life and the
contents make fascinating reading.
On the frst page there appear the words
This book Mamma gave me, that I might
write the journal of my journey to Wales in it, -
Victoria, Kensington Palace, July 31.
She is writing, not for the historian but for
her own pleasure. These Journals are the
simple impressions of a young girl of thirteen;
about her own life, the people she met and
the sights and images, not always good, she
encountered on her travels.
The visit to Wales was considered to be
educational, not only for her but also for her
future subjects. She was being groomed to
succeed her uncle, King William IV, and it
was important for her to meet as many of her
subjects as possible and, likewise, for them to
see the Heiress Presumptive.
On Wednesday 1st August, according to
her Journal, at 6 minutes past 7 she
and her mother plus numerous courtiers
leave Kensington Palace, London to journey
northwards. The entries in her Journal are very
precise about timing, changes of horses en
route, the weather and the sights, particularly
through Birmingham where she writes, We
just passed through a town where all coal
mines are and you see the fre glimmer at a
distance in the engines in many places. The

men, women, children, country and houses
are all black. She continues there are
coals about, and the grass is quite blasted
and black.
Her progress north takes her through
Shrewsbury to Welshpool where she stayed
at Powis Castle as a guest of Lord and Lady
Powis. Thence to Wynnstay Park, Ruabon
for a short break before continuing on to the
fnal destination of Beaumaris, Anglesey via
Llangollen and a change of horses at the
Hand Inn. The landlords daughter presented
the Princess with a Welsh doll, attired in full
Cambrian costume, at which she expressed
herself highly pleased.
At Anglesey she stayed for ten weeks, which
latterly included being a guest of the 1st
Marquess of Anglesey Henry Paget at Plas
Newydd. It was he who had commanded the
cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo - at which he
famously lost a leg.
Eaton Hall
On Monday, the 15th October 1832, their
Royal Highnesses depart from Plas Newydd,
and at six oclock in the evening reach
Eaton Hall, near Chester, travelling through
Denbighshire and Flintshire, changing horses
at Northop. At the magnifcent mansion of the
Marquis of Westminster, the young Princess
and her mother were regally entertained.
In her Journal, Victoria records on the 16th
October At past 9 we breakfasted. The
breakfast room is magnifcent () and the
breakfast was served in handsome silver tea
and coffee pots; a crown of gold with precious
stones contained the bread.
The next day, the young Princess Victoria
duly opened the Grosvenor Bridge crossing
the River Dee and on the 17th October 2012
it will be precisely 180 years since this event.
The actual construction was incomplete and
it will not be until November 1833 before the
frst traffc would pass over the bridge.
At the time of its construction, the bridge
was the longest single-span arch bridge in the
world, a title that it retained for 30 years.
The royal party were kept extremely busy
during their stay in Chester and the Princess
became godmother to the infant daughter of
Lord and Lady Robert Grosvenor. The young
child was named Victoria Charlotte in her
honour.
Remembrance
On the last day, Thursday, Victoria
particularly enjoyed a delightful archery fete
given in the Marquiss grounds. Members
of the Royal British Bowmen, founded in
Wrexham in 1787, were in attendance. At the
conclusion she sat down to dinner, served in a
style of princely magnifcence to two hundred
and ffty guests. The fnal entry in the Journal
of her stay at Eaton Hall reads After dinner
was over, I gave the children, who had come
when dinner was over, a little remembrance.
I took leave of the whole family and went to
bed. I stayed up till 10
The next morning, Friday 19th October the
Duchess and her daughter took leave of the
Marquis of Westminster and his family to
proceed to Chatsworth, where they remained
till the following Wednesday. The entourage
continued its progress south and eventually
returned to Kensington Palace on Friday 9th
November 1832.
In 1837, this young Princess became
Queen Victoria and in 1897 the country and
the Commonwealth celebrated her Diamond
Jubilee. She died in 1901 and the memory
and legacy of her era lives on.
We have just commemorated another
Diamond Jubilee, that of our present Queen,
and who knows when that will happen again?
