In 1942, the Japanese Imperial Forces invaded and entered Albay. In 1945, Filipino and American troops with Bicolano guerillas fought against the Japanese and liberated Albay during World War II.
Profile
Geography Located between the provinces of Camarines Sur on the north and Sorsogon on the south. It is bounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the northeast by the Lagonoy gulf, and on the west and southwest by the Burias Pass. The islands in the north under the jurisdiction of the province are Rapu-Rapu, Batan, Cagraray and San Miguel. Area It has a total land area of 2,552.6 square kilometers, which makes it the 26th smallest province. Political Subdivision Composed of fifteen (15) municipalities and three (3) cities, Albay has three (3) congressional districts. Legazpi City is the capital of the province.

Brief History
Albay and its surrounding areas were known as Ibalon when Juan de Salcedo and 120 soldiers xplored it in 1573. Sawangan, a small settlement by a mangrove swamp, became a town called Albay bay (which means by the bay) in 1616. The town was first renamed Albay, then Legazpi, as Albay went on to refer to the province. In 1846, the islands of Masbate, Ticao, and Burias were separated from Albay to form the comandancia of Masbate. Albay was then divided into four districts: Iraya, Cordillera or Tobacco, Sorsogon, and Catanduanes. 1n 1894, Sorsogon became a separate province and Catanduanes in 1945. The province of albay itself was created on March 10, 1917. In 1649, the natives rebelled against their recruitment to Cavite to build galleons. In 1814, Mayon Volcano erupted, killing 1,200 people and burying the town of Cagsawa. During the early 19th century, abaca hemp for shipping rope became source of wealth.
Population Based on the August 2007 census, the province has a total population of 1,187,185. Language/Dialect Bikol is the primary language spoken in Albay, being part of the Bicol Region. There are other dialects spoken in the province, however, such as Bicolano Viejo, Daragueo, Legazpeo or Albayanon, Oasnon and others. Majority of the inhabitants also understand Tagalog and English. Topography The province is generally mountainous with scattered fertile plains and valleys. Mayon Volcano, standing at around 2,462 meters, is the most famous landform in Albay, and in the whole of Bicol. This active volcano is nearly perfectly-shaped and is considered by many to be more beautiful than Mt. Fuji in Japan. Other mountains in the province are Catburawan, Masaraga, Malinao, and Pantao. Climate The climate in Albay is generally mild with no specific extreme seasons. The frequency of the tropical storms in the entire region is between 16 to 19 percent. Economy
Traditional Industries Agriculture is the main industry, which produces such crops as coconut, rice, sugar, pilinut and abac. The manufacture of abaca products such as Manila hemp, hats, bags, mats, and slippers is one of the main sources of income in the rural areas.
Heavy Manufacturing Industries Bicols largest industrial sites are located in Albay: Tiwi and Manito boast geothermal energy plants. Camalig has the Goodfound Cement Factory; Legazpi City has Legazpi Oil Company and two other large oil milling plants, making Albay a top foreign currency earner in this part of Luzon. Transportation and Connectivity Albay is also the regions principal trans-shipment point with Tabaco, Legazpi and Pioduran Ports. Legazpi City is has its own domestic airport which hopes to serve international flights in the near future. Legazpi Airport serves as Bicols gateway to Manila and the Visayas. How to Get There By Air

Historical JOSE MA. PEARANDA MONUMENT A monument built as a tribute to the late Jose Ma. Pearanda who served as Governor of Albay from 1834-1843
located at Pearanda Park along Rizal Street.
CAGSAWA RUINS A lavish church during the Spanish era that was buried during the worst eruption in February 1, 1814. Today, only the belfry remains as a mute testimony of Mayons upredictable fury and devastating strength. The Cagsawa Ruins Park affords tourists an unhampered view of Mayon Volcano. The young park tour guides also bring more fun to the sightseeing experience. Directions: From Legazpi City, ride a jeep marked with the destinations: Malabog, Guinobatan or Camalig. Ask the driver to drop you off at the road side going to the park. LEGAZPI CITY MUSEUM Housed at the second floor of the City Hall Annex Building, the city museum has historical and archaeological displays and memorabilia of the citys gentry. It also serves as an art gallery.
BAHAY NA BATO A Spanish-era structure which used to be Smith Bell and Company, an import-export firm dealing in abaca whose origins dated from 1868. Later this architectural wonder was bought by a gifted lyricpoet, Angela Manalang-Gloria, born in Pampanga and chose to live in her last day in this house.
HEADLESS MONUMENT Located within the Legazpi City Post Office Compound at Barangay Lapu-Lapu, this monument was constructed as a dedication to the unknown heroes who
died and shed their blood during the Japanese military occupation of Legazpi City. It stands today as a vivid reminder of the bloody struggles by the brave Bicolano soldiers and civilians against the Japanese invaders. LEGAZPI HEROES MEMORIAL PYLON A 16-meter high pylon in the commercial district of Legazpi. It is located at the junction of Rizal Street and Quezon Avenue in Legazpi Port District.
JAPANESE TUNNEL A 40-meter long L-shaped and seven-foot deep tunnel used by the Japanese forces as an arsenal during the 2nd World War. It is located at Barangay EMs Barrio South in Albay District. GEN. JOSE IGNACIO PAUA This small park located in Barangay Baadero features a monument of the late General Paua, concrete benches and a waiting shed. PILGRIMAGE TO JOROAN - Every third Saturday of August in the small Barangay of Joroan in Tiwi, thousands of devotees flock here to pay homage to the miraculous Image of Nuestra Seora de Salvacion (Our Lady of Salvation), the patroness of Albay. It is highlighted by a maritime procession after a mass at Joroan Church. The Image is carried by the men folks down to the beach where a large and welldecorated trawl boat is docked. An entourage of decorated pump boats followed carrying the pilgrims and devotees to the shores and village at Sogod where a concelebrated mass is held again. An amazing mass of people, all pilgrims and devotees coming from the different places of the country join the first group of pilgrims who finished the maritime procession.
OUR LADY OF THE GATE CHURCH Daraga After 232 years, the Daraga Church remains a reflection of fine art with its heavy baroque design mixed with renaissance gothic noticeable in its faade giving it a special distinction from all the other churches.
SAN JUAN BAUTISTA CHURCH Tabaco City Declared as National Cultural treasure, the church has a rare floor plan and borne with strong stonewalls. These and more architectural heritage treasures await the art enthusiasts. Natural

The upper slopes of the Mayon are steep, reaching up to 40 degrees in angle. One of the most active volcanoes in the country. Recorded 64 eruptions since its first documented activity in 1616. Eruption in February 01, 1814 killing 1,200 people and destroying the Cagsawa church was one of the deadliest recorded eruptions in the world. It is commonly referred to as one of the natural wonders of the world. It has a notched rim where a pool of boiling lava can be found. Sulfuric steams and gases continually emit from the crater. Its name was derived from the word magayon, meaning beautiful. Its name has been regarded as the symbol not only of Albay but also of the Philippines. Since its first recorded eruption of 1616, Mount Mayon has about 40 recorded eruptions and the worst was on February 1, 1814 which buried the settlements of Cagsawa and Budiao in the town of Daraga. The eruption was on February 2, 1993 killed at least seventy-three people.

KAWA-KAWA HILL In Ligao, one should head to Tuburan village and hike up the hill without a hilltop, the natural marvel known as kawa-kawa a local word meaning cauldron. Kawakawa is a hill with a crater shaped depression on its top. From an elevation of 236 meters, one can view the entire city proper below and all its surroundings. Sunrise and sunsets are spectacular. Almost every day one can experience the beautiful multitude of changing colors during sunset. HOYOP-HOYOPAN CAVE - The name really means Cave of the Bats. There is a grotto-like formation inside which astounds visitors. It is found in Camalig. Legend says that the cave was a primitive habitat of the early Bicolano natives and was made as burial site. It could easily be reached by any type of vehicle. Hundreds of visitors come to this place and explore the various natural formations inside. It remains as the most popular cave in the province of Albay. CALABIDONGAN CAVE - It is found in Camalig. Close to Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave but visitors have to trek to reach it, passing brooks and a wide river under lush surroundings and over green pasture lands. One must be ready to get completely wet in exploring the cave. The most hazardous is the entrance called lizards gate where one has to swim across a seven feet long lagoon. MINAROSO CAVES - This rarely explored natural cavern is situated close to the sea. It is a haven of seabirds and swallows. The cave is located in Villahermosa, a barangay in Batan Island, part of the island of Rapu-Rapu on the northeastern
POTOTAN CAVE A 4-hour spelunking adventure site, about 10 feet above the beach line. Its cave entrance is shaped like a yawning mouth, about 30 ft. high and 20 ft. wide. Once inside, an underground river that spans 12 ft. high calmly flows into different chambers and passageways. Stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes and contours are crvd on craggy walls. CAGBULALACAO CAVE The cave was a stone-tool jar site that yielded stone axes, stone gauges, glass earrings, potteries and jar burials attributed to the late Neolithic period.
BUSAY FALLS - Located in Malilipot, Albay. It is considered as one of the highest waterfalls in the country because of its seven-tiered cascading

BLACK SAND BEACHES Drive northeast and experience the black sand beaches along the coastline in towns of Bacacay, Sto. Domingo & Tiwi. The distinct black sand is created from the natural erosion of volcanic rock and which evolved from ground lava. The sand is a little grainy and heated but it is easy to walk on. Local folks believe that it has therapeutic benefits.

Its strategic location has commanded a breathtaking view of Tabaco Bay and the green soft-looking and quiet island of San Miguel. CAGRARAY ISLAND Separated from the mainland by the Sula Channel, Cagraray is home to many caves and Albays best beaches. Eleven caves were used as burial sites by the early Bicolanos. Dr. J. Fox was the archaeologist who led the diggings in these caves way back in 1969. BATAN ISLAND Sandwiched between Cagraray and Rapu-Rapu islands, Batan is a coal-rich island and home to the mysterious Pototan Cave, a fourhour spelunking site about 10 ft. above the beach line. CORANGON ISLAND A tiny islet formed by pulverized corals through thousands of years. The swirling turns of waves and sea currents caused these crushed corals to surface above the seal line, circling on an on until it evolved into n island. The island is clearly apparent during low tide as one approached the Tiwi town. NAGASO BOILING LAKE A geothermal like formation, the steam pressure is described as stronger than Tiwi geothermal. The lake has an outlet near the seashore just a hundred meters away from the steaming sand and coral-like rocks emits geyser. The

DARAGA CATHOLIC CHURCH - Built in 1773 by the Franciscan missionaries three years before the declaration of American independence from the British colonizers. This is a priceless relic for art enthusiasts because of its rich baroque architectural design. Its very huge structure is considered above standard. Standing on a massive hilltop, it dominates other structures of
the town of Daraga. At closer look, it contains archeological relics such as santos and religious seals carved artistically on volcanic rocks which are considered priceless.
Virgin Mary stands at the hilltop. The feast day is celebrated every 12th day of December. A mini museum is also located within the compound.
CAMALIG CATHOLIC CHURCH - It is a church built out of volcanic rocks where relics from Hoyop-Hoyopan cave are carefully stored and displayed for viewing. These relics which manifest the early Malayan influence reflect the provinces historical origins. Glazed ceramics reveal Chinese influence while the primitive potteries are derived from the flourishing Philippine culture two thousand years ago.

The Albayanos are known for their hospitality, being very religious and hardworking. They are also fun-loving and this can be seen during fiestas particularly in the month of May. Albay fiestas are a mixture of Christian commemoration and folk elements, celebrated with great pomp and pageantry which are held for different reasons; as in the form of thanksgiving to pay homage to their towns patron saint, a celebration for the bountiful harvest or a re-enactment of a historical event.
IBALONG FESTIVAL A festival depicting Bicols early beginnings as portrayed by the characters and stories of the three heroes, Baltog, Handyong and Bantong. The name was the momenclature of Bicol Region. It is a way of bringing together the hearts of
the people of Legazpi City and the province of Albay and exhibiting what they are famous for. BIKOL ARTS FESTIVAL - A monthlong festival held every February 1-28 showcasing the regions arts and culture, crafts and agro-industrial products of the different provinces and cities of the region. Activities include a grand festival parade, essay writing and poster making contest, laro ng lahi, fashion show, etc. FIESTA TSINOY A Chinese New Year celebration participated by the FilipinoChinese community (Albay Chapter) featuring various activities i.e., Dragon/Lion Dance, Chinese Cultural program, ancestral veneration within a mass, among others. ROKYAW FESTIVAL Rokyaw is Aquinas Universitys offering and tribute to the Bikolanos, as well as its advocacy for Bicol development through culture and the arts. It will feature stories done through street dancing and short play. Story lines will tackle contemporary global and local concerns of the Bikolano and his/her community and the many ways by which they as people grapple with everyday realities.
TABAK FESTIVAL A street presentation showcasing the legend of Tabaco City in conjunction with the Feast of St. John the Baptist, its patron saint. According to legend, when the Spanish conquistadores landed, they were met by a native, an irately jealous father who taught that they were taking away his beautiful daughter. At the top of his voice he shouted to his family, Tabac Co! (My bolo!). Hence, the Spaniards christened the place Tabaco before they left. LAYAG FESTIVAL A week-long festival describing the primitive means of transportation of the early people of Rapu-Rapu. The festival was taken from a local word layag which means sail boat. The festival is held every May 22 to 27. PINANGAT FESTIVAL The town of Camalig is famous for Bicolanos culinary specialty, the laing or pinangat. Hence, the celebration of the festival, which conjuncts with the Feast of St. John the Baptist, its patron saint. The festival also showcases the municipalitys rich cultural heritage. PULANG-ANGUI FESTIVAL The festival was derived from its towns legend Pulang-Angui, a vibrant captivating woman who loves to wear red-colored dresses. It celebrates and depicts the towns rich and unique
socio-cultural talents and qualities of its people, verdant eco-tourism assets and distinct trade and delicacies of the place. LIBON PAROY FESTIVAL The festival reflects on the towns main source pf living paroy or rice of which the town is known to be the rice granary of Albay. It features various activities including street parade, sports fest, longest tilapia and corn grill, and many more. LUBID FESTIVAL A week-long celebration in Malilipot showcasing the abaca hemp locally known as lubid which the municipality is known to be the regions major producer. The hemps many uses are of importance as a major source of livelihood in the local community. PILGRIMAGE TO JOROAN Held every 3rd Saturday of August to pay homage to the miraculous image of our Lady of Salvation, Patroness of Albay. It is highlighted by a marine procession where the image is carried by the menfolks down to the beach where a large and well-decorated trawl boat is docked. An entourage of similarly decorated pump boats follows, carrying the pilgrims and devotees to the shores and village at Sogod where a concelebrated mass is held. CAGSAWA FESTIVAL A historical and religious celebration in honor of the towns Patroness, Our Lady of the Gate. It aims to showcase the cultural life of the Daragueos. Various activities are lined up for this celebration. PASTORES BICOL An interpretative folk-festival related to the celebration of Christmas tradition. It reenacts the rejoicing shepherds who sang the first Christmas Carol during the birth of Baby Jesus in Bethlehem. PINANGAT The dish is a nice blend of taro leaves, chili, meat, and coconut milk wrapped in gabi leaves and tied securely with coconut leaf. BICOL EXPRESS A stew made from long chilies, coconut milk, shrimp paste, onion, pork, and garlic. PILI NUTS Indigenous to the Philippines, pili nuts come from the pili tree that bears a nut with a thick black skin when ripe. They are slender, with a length of approximately 2 - 3 inches long and a diameter of around inches (pilinuts.org). Pili nuts may be eaten raw or candied. ABACA PRODUCTS Commonly known as Manila Hemp, these are made into handbags, slippers, baskets, etc. which is currently in high demand for both domestic and foreign markets.
MAYON VOLCANO ATV AND LAVA TRAIL ADVENTURE The ATV experience starts from Brgy. Pawa in Legazpi City which is a P8.00 P10.00 tricycle ride from the city proper. The trail crosses small rivers and rocky areas. The trail is more or less 9 kilometers and about 45 minutes drive from the starting point to the lava front.

city was dissolved in June 8, 1954. Finally, on June 12, 1959, Legazpi became a city once more under Republic Act No. 2234. This was later amended by Republic Act No. 5525. On February 27, 1973, the city of Legazpi was declared under Presidential Decree No. 125, to comprise its present territorial jurisdiction and the adjacent municipality of Daraga. With the onset of the Integrated Reorganization Plan however, the decree was permanently mothballed. This plan also made the city as the regional administrative center of the Bicol Region (Presidential Decree No. 1).
Brief History
Legazpi was named after Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the Spanish conquistador who conquered the Philippine islands in 1565, and whose family name came from Legazpi, a town in Guipuzcoa, Spain. The place was founded by the ancient settlers of the old barangay of Sawangan in the domain of Gat Ibal, a chief who ruled Albay. Spread in small groups of huts made of nipa and rattan, the small settlement occupied a conscription of low and swampy land known as Banuang-gurang or Binanuahan, which means old town or place in which a town was built. Legazpi first became a city under the Becerra Law of 1892, which constituted the municipalities of Legazpi, Albay Nuevo and Daraga, into the Ayutamiento de Albay. Legazpi became a city for the second time on July 18, 1948 when Daraga and Legazpi were combined again to constitute its territory, under Republic Act No. 306. Population Based on the August 2007 census, the province has a total population of 175,843. Language/Dialect Generally, the Bicol dialect spoken in Legazpi City and Albay District is the common tongue used. They also speak Tagalog fluently; English is not difficult for them to communicate with liberal stature. Topography Generally plain on the northeastern side with slope ranging from 5 to about 15 degrees while dominantly rolling to hilly on the southern part. Coastal areas vary from plain (northern portion) to hilly terrain (southern portion). Climate The city enjoys an average temperature of 270 C, coldest during the month of December at 250 C and warmest during the month of June at 280 C.
The commercial activities of the City of Legazpi are characterized by the presence of establishments engaged in various economic activities. These include establishments in the primary industries such as agriculture, forestry and fishing, mining and quarrying; secondary activities in manufacturing; and in the tertiary industries such as banking and finance, real estate and related services. Communication Legazpi City is connected nationwide and to the rest of the world through up-to-date communication facilities. It has two cable TV operators, DCTV (Digital Cable Television) and ESTV, and cellular and landline phone operators, Digitel/Sun Cellular, Globe Telecom, Smart/PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telecommunication); and local MATELCO (Mayon Telephone Company), offering mobile phone, fax, data, and DSL Internet services. Transportation and Connectivity Legazpi City is the southernmost stop of the Philippine National Railways Main Line South. It is a gateway to the rest of the region via the Legazpi Domestic Airport and Legazpi Port, a national sub-port of entry that services sea-going vessel. LIBERTY BELL A bronze bell installed in 1945 by the American liberation forces located in Pearanda Park along Rizal Street. It is enclosed with a dome-shaped concrete structure with this inscription. Whenever oppression knocks at your door, feel free to ring this bell.
JOSE MA. PEARANDA MONUMENT A monument built as a tribute to the late Jose Ma. Pearanda who served as Governor of Albay from 1834-1843 located at Pearanda Park along Rizal Street. LEGAZPI CITY MUSEUM Housed at the second floor of the City Hall Annex Building, the city museum has historical and archaeological displays and memorabilia of the citys gentry. It also serves as an art gallery.
JAPANESE TUNNEL A 40-meter long L-shaped and seven-foot deep tunnel used by the Japanese forces as an arsenal during the 2nd World War. It is located at Barangay EMs Barrio South in Albay District. GEN. JOSE IGNACIO PAUA This small park located in Barangay Baadero features a monument of the late General Paua, concrete benches and a waiting shed. This is also planted with different kinds of shrubs and flowering plants. Its triangular shape is formed by the converging streets of Rizal, Baadero and E. Jacinto. MATANAG CROSS This can be found in the upper area of Barangay Matanag in honor of 77 farmers who were killed during the fatal eruption of Mayon Volcano in 1993. Cultural Natural
HEADLESS MONUMENT Located within the Legazpi City Post Office Compound at Barangay Lapu-Lapu, this monument was constructed as a dedication to the unknown heroes who died and shed their blood during the Japanese military occupation of Legazpi City. It stands today as a vivid reminder of the bloody struggles by the brave Bicolano soldiers and civilians against the Japanese invaders. LEGAZPI HEROES MEMORIAL PYLON A 16-meter high pylon in the commercial district of Legazpi. It is located at the junction of Rizal Street and Quezon Avenue in Legazpi Port District.
MAYON VOLCANO The stratovolcano known for its almost perfect symmetrical triangle shape. It stands majestically at 8,077.427 feet in height above sea level. From the broad base, it is about 10 kms. in radius. The crater is 2,462 meters above sea level. Base circumference is 62.8 km (40 ml) and with a diameter of 0.5
kms. The upper slopes of the Mayon are steep, reaching up to 40 degrees in angle. One of the most active volcanoes in the country. Recorded 64 eruptions since its first documented activity in 1616. Eruption in February 01, 1814 killing 1,200 people and destroying the Cagsawa church was one of the deadliest recorded eruptions in the world. It is commonly referred to as one of the natural wonders of the world. It has a notched rim where a pool of boiling lava can be found. Sulfuric steams and gases continually emit from the crater. Its name was derived from the word magayon, meaning beautiful. Its name has been regarded as the symbol not only of Albay but also of the Philippines. Since its first recorded eruption of 1616, Mount Mayon has about 40 recorded eruptions and the worst was on February 1, 1814 which buried the settlements of Cagsawa and Budiao in the town of Daraga. The eruption was on February 2, 1993 killed at least seventy-three people. PORTA AZUL This resort in Padang is ideal for swimming, scuba diving, boating and speed boat racing. It is complete with modern and luxurious facilities.
LIGON HILL A place good for hiking, climbing, zip line, rapelling and lava watching. It offers a 360 degree-view of the Mayon Volcano and a very good view of the city as well, especially at night. Visitors are encouraged to walk from the foot to the top of the hill. Travel Time: 3-minute drive from the airport.
KAPUNTUKAN HILL - Described as a sleeping lion because of its contour and shape, it is barely a kilometer away from the Legazpi pier, passing through the populous Victory Village. Up the hill, one will have a wider view of the whole city of Legazpi and its neighboring municipalities on the north and Manito and the island of RapuRapu in the south. The hill is commonly used as the strategic base by professional photographers and photo enthusiasts, who would like to have a panoramic shot of Mayon Volcano by day or night. MINAROSO CAVES - This rarely explored natural cavern is situated close to the sea. It is a haven of seabirds and swallows. The cave is located in Villahermosa, a barangay in Batan Island, part of the island of Rapu-Rapu on the northeastern part. Historically, it is believed as burial site of ancient Bicolanos.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE SHRINE Located atop the Buraguis Hill overlooking the city proper, and features life-size images of the characters of the Way of the Cross stations arranged within the hill slopes. A 20-feet image of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands at the hilltop. The feast day is celebrated every 12th day of December. A mini museum is also located within the compound.

Weeklong activities are lined-up as a form of thanksgiving for the bounty received. Festivals ST. RAPHAEL PARISH CHURCH A church located within the Legazpi Port Commercial District. St. Raphael is the Patron Saint of the city; feast day is celebrated every 24th day of October.
ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHEDRAL This church attained the status of a cathedral when the Diocese of Legazpi had its residence in the Albay District, thus is became the Episcopal Seat. IGLESIA NI KRISTO CHURCH Constructed in 1965, this serves as the central church of this religious denomination in the Province of Albay. It is located in Barangay Cabagan.
IBALONG FESTIVAL A festival depicting Bicols early beginnings as portrayed by the characters and stories of the three heroes, Baltog, Handyong and Bantong. The name was the momenclature of Bicol Region. It is a way of bringing together the hearts of the people of Legazpi City and the province of Albay and exhibiting what they are famous for. Activities include a grand festival parade, essay writing and poster making contest, laro ng lahi, fashion show, etc. FIESTA TSINOY A Chinese New Year celebration participated by the FilipinoChinese community (Albay Chapter) featuring various activities i.e., Dragon/Lion Dance, Chinese Cultural program, ancestral veneration within a mass, among others. ROKYAW FESTIVAL Rokyaw is Aquinas Universitys offering and tribute to the Bikolanos, as well as its advocacy for Bicol development through culture and the arts. It will feature stories done through street dancing and short play. Story lines will tackle contemporary global and local concerns of the Bikolano and his/her community and the many ways by which they as people grapple with everyday realities. PASTORES BICOL An interpretative folk-festival related to the celebration of Christmas tradition. It reenacts the rejoicing shepherds who sang the first Christmas Carol during the birth of Baby Jesus in Bethlehem. Participants are clad in colorful costumes with the traditional arco as they sing and dance to the tune of Pastores A Belen.
LIGON HILL NATURE PARK ADVENTURE An exciting destination for locals and tourists rising on top of one of Legazpi Citys most famous landmarks, the 156-meter Ligon Hill (pronounced as /li-NYON/). Ligon Hill Nature Park offers fun filled and thrilling activities: ziplining, rappelling, trekking, hanging bridge crossing, and kapit tuko (lizard grip) trailing.
MAYON VOLCANO ATV AND LAVA TRAIL ADVENTURE The ATV experience starts from Brgy. Pawa in Legazpi City which is a P8.00 P10.00 tricycle ride from the city proper. The trail crosses small rivers and rocky areas. The trail is more or less 9 kilometers and about 45 minutes drive from the starting point to the lava front.

Profile
Geography Geographically located between 13 to 14 latitude and 123 to 124 longitude. It is situated within the central part of the third district of Albay and bounded by the following municipalities: on the north by the municipality of Oas; on the south by the municipality of Guinobatan; on the east by the city of Tabaco; and, on the west by the municipality of Pio Duran.
Brief History
The name Ligao came is derived from the local word "ticau", once an abundant tree whose poisonous leaves were used to catch fish in rivers or creeks. Most Ligaoeos, however, believe that the name Ligao was originally "licau" which means to take the long way around or to turn away from the ordinary or usual route. Ligao started as a small settlement known as Cavasi in the 16th century. It grew in population as it attracted natives from nearby settlements. Eventually, power struggles among ambitious and aggressive leaders caused trouble as they created divisions among the settlement. There arose five divisions led by maginoos (chieftains): Pagkilatan, Maaban, Sampogan, Makabongay and Hokoman. Peace was only restored when Chieftain Pagkilatan was appointed supreme leader over the
Area The city has a total land area of about 308.90 km. It accounts for 9.65% of the total land area of Albay and ranks second to the municipality of Oas in terms of the largest municipal land area in the entire province. Political Subdivision Composed of fifteen (55) barangays, eight (8) of which is within the poblacion. The largest barangay is Maonon while the smallest barangay is Dunao which have a land area of 2,493.57 hectares and 29.57 hectares, respectively.

Population Based on the August 2007 census, the province has a total population of 101,179. Language/Dialect The dialects vary as the people who came to settle, from the Ilocano dialect to Kapampangan to Tagalog, Visayan and even transient Muslim traders with their own dialects. But Ligao City has a distinct dialect which differs in pronunciation, meaning and spelling even from other Bicol dialects. The local dialect is quite similar to Kinaray-a, a dialect in Antique. Topography Ligao has a total land area of 24,640 hectares, 23.05 percent of which are fertile flatlands suitable for high value crops and 76.95 percent are mountainous and hilly terrain with potential for agriculture and traversed by secondary rivers. Tertiary rivers originate from Mt. Masaraga and Mayon Volcano located at the south and eastern side of the city. Ligao's soil is generally fertile giving great flexibility practically to all types of crops. There Ligao City has an abundant water supply attributing to its wellmanaged watersheds. It has beautiful natural springs, caves, hills, lakes, waterfalls, mountains and beaches waiting to be tapped for development. The coastal resource boosts of vast marine biodiversity. The city is rich in mineral resources among which are high quality sand and gravel, and the aluminum silicate (zeolite), already being marketed externally. Communication Two cable television companies and four telephone companies operate within the city. Two courier services, a post office and three of the country's biggest cellular network providers (Smart, Globe and Sun Cellular) and an FM radio station (DZRH Radio Natin) also operate within the city providing the communication needs of the people. Transportation and Connectivity
The City is the Trade Center in the 3rd District of Albay. It serves the nearby municipalities of Pioduran, Oas Guinobatan, Polangui and Libon. Ligao is considered as one of the Transport Nodes under the LegazpiIriga-naga-Daet (LIND) Growth Corridor. How to Get There By Air

KAWA-KAWA HILL In Ligao, one should head to Tuburan village and hike up the hill without a hilltop, the natural marvel known as kawa-kawa a local word meaning cauldron. Kawakawa is a hill with a crater shaped depression on its top. From an elevation of 236 meters, one can view the entire city proper below and all its surroundings. the bay of what is now known as Cormidal. In 1811, a terrible typhoon called baguiong Oguis or white typhoon brought havoc to the town. This was followed in 1814 by a major eruption of the Mayon Volcano which showered the area with ashes and hot rocks. The Americans arrived at Tabaco on February 9, 1900 under the command of Col. Walter Howe. Superior armaments and well-trained soldiers quickened the Americans conquest against the Tabaquenios relentless courage and patriotism. This same courage and patriotism was again witnessed during the Second World War. With the restoration of peace after World War II, the residents of Tabaco started to rebuild the town; taking advantage of the American occupation making the Tabaco a thriving town by the time the country was given independence. Hon. Krisel Lagman-Luistro introduced House Bill No. 7851, converting the municipality of Tabaco into a component city of the Province of Albay. Senate Bill No. 2244 was sponsored by Sen. Sergio Osmea III and Sen. Franklin Drilon as its counterpart in the Senate. The Republic Act No. 9020, An Act Converting the Municipality of Tabaco into a Component City of the Province of Albay was signed into Law by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last February 5, 2001. The municipality was finally converted into a city after the Plebiscite conducted last March 4, 2001.
Brief History
The founding of Tabaco dates back in the year 1587 when it was only a visita of then bigger town of Cagsawa, spiritually administered by the Franciscan friars. A popular legend tells however that Tabaco means, "Tabak ko", meaning "my bolo". The recorded history of the town began in 1587 with the missionary work of the Franciscan fathers. In 1616, Rev. Fr. Pedro de Alcareso became the first permanent minister and built a church which was dedicated to the glorious Precusor of our SaviourSt. John the Baptist, whose feast is on June 24. Up to the present, St. John the Baptist has remained the town's patron saint. The first inhabitants who settled along the seashore engaged in fishing and crude farming. Due to the continuous attacks of Moro raiders, the natives migrated to San Vicente and San Carlos and started the foundation of the first poblacion in 1703, while the fishermen transferred to the shores of

Geography
The City of Tabaco is located on the eastern coast of Albay province with an area of 117.14 sq. km. Its territory occupies a large part of the mainland, which extends from the Lagunoy Gulf to San Miguel Island; an island located a few kilometers to the east. Tabaco Bay bound the Tabaco municipality to the east, the municipality of Malinao to the North, the municipality of Malilipot to the south and the City of Ligao to the Southwest. The boundaries of the city are characterized by the intersection of two national roads with one traversing the east coast from the southern City of Legazpi and the other originating from the City of Tabaco going west across the City of Ligao, which, in turn, connects with Manila south road. Population Based on the August 2007 census, the province has a total population of 123, 513. Language/Dialect Majority of the population speak Bicol dialect. Other languages/dialects spoken are Tagalog, Kapampangan, Waray, Spanish, English and Chinese. Topography The terrain of Tabaco is generally flat. The difference in elevation from the highest point to the lowest point is 5 meters only. Maximum elevation is 13 meters above sea level. The central part of the mainland which is located slightly to the west of the poblacion is generally flat along the national highway going to Ligao City. To the northwesternmost portion from the central mainland, the elevation of the terrain reaches 400 meters above sea level. From the south of the national road to the extreme portion west of the mainland, the elevation continuously rises up to the crater of the Mayon Volcano at an elevation of 2,462 meters. The San Miguel Island is almost entirely surrounded by groups of small hills. The land level, however, is plain and elevated at about 35 meters above sea level. MAYON VOLCANO The stratovolcano known for its almost perfect symmetrical triangle shape. It stands majestically at 8,077.427 feet in height above sea level. From the broad base, it is about 10 kms. in radius. The crater is 2,462 meters above sea level. Base circumference is 62.8 km (40 ml) and with a diameter of 0.5 kms. The upper slopes of the Mayon are steep, reaching up to 40 degrees in angle. One of the most active volcanoes in the country. Recorded 64 eruptions since its first documented activity in 1616. Eruption in February 01, 1814 killing 1,200 people and destroying the Cagsawa church was one of the deadliest recorded eruptions in the world. It is commonly referred to as one of the natural wonders of the world. It has a notched rim where a pool of boiling lava can be found. Sulfuric steams and gases continually emit from the crater. Its name was derived from the word magayon, meaning beautiful. Its name has been regarded as the symbol not only of Albay but also of the Philippines. Since its first recorded eruption of 1616, Mount Mayon has about 40 recorded eruptions and the worst was on February 1, 1814 which buried the settlements of Cagsawa and Budiao in the town of Daraga. The eruption was on February
2, 1993 killed at least seventy-three people. Man-made
MAYON SKYLINE PARK (Formerly Mayon Resthouse) It nestles on the northeastern slopes of Mt. Mayon at an altitude of 2,700 feet above sea level. A summer resort with a 28 degrees temperature almost the same with Baguio City. It is popularly known as heaven on earth because of the hanging clouds and pleasant climate cool and invigorating. From this height, visitors see the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and the different towns, lakes, villages, fields and other mountains. Accessible through Tabaco or Ligao, any type of motor vehicles can be used to reach it. It can accommodate overnight tourists with its well-furnished rooms and complete with facilities such as restaurant, convention hall, picnic sheds and playing grounds.
MAYON PLANETARIUM & SCIENCE PARK Offers a view of the volcano and the lands around it. Huts are provided for picnics and sightseeing. Highly recommended by the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) now known as TIEZA and the DOST, the planetarium is often filled with students on field trip. According to legend, when the Spanish conquistadores landed, they were met by a native, an irately jealous father who taught that they were taking away his beautiful daughter.
