It is such a cool concept. Background designs such as interlocking circles, twist, flaming clamshells all become easy and unique. The really cool thing about this class is every time I teach it the students come up with even more ideas. Let me introduce you to this technique and see what wonderous things you can imagine. 4012 - Interlocking Hexagons
Marti Michell www.frommarti.com 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM (6 Hour Class) Skill level: Confident Beginner Fall in love with hexagons! One tool does it all! Coincidentally, that size is perfect for showcasing big beautiful fabric designs. (Everything we talk about can be applied to any size hexagon so if big hexagons arent your thing, come along and work on smaller sizes.) Think: Asian, Big Bold Contemporary prints, Large Novelties, Toile or other vignette designs. This could be a variety of collected fabrics on the SAME theme or possibly one fabric with many different scenes or motifs. If you have collected Asian prints, for example, and still do not know what to do with them- this is the perfect class. Sewing Machines Provided By Babylock Supply List: Downloadable PDF

It has been said of some quilts: This one either put her into the loony bin, or kept her out! Julie discusses the light -- and more serious side of Quilts as Therapy. What is so compelling about quilts, how they can figure into addiction and compulsion, and how they function as healers? In some quilts its the images that are funny, in others words. Sometimes its just the idea thats so amusing! Julie will share slides and live examples of some very, very funny quilts -- both 19th and early 20th century, narrative quilts, quilts of wretched excess, and mourning quilts. . Road Trips

1/23 - Wednesday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM roAd trip to: hoffmAn internAtionAl And kellogg houSe tour Our first stop today will be at Hoffman California-International Fabrics (www.hoffmanfabrics.com). In the 1950s, both Phillip and Walter Hoffman were championship surfers and their surfboards decorate the warehouse walls. They combined their passion for surfing and travel with unusual printing processes to produce tropical florals, surfing scenes, beach life and underwater settings in their fabrics. Hoffman Fabrics were often used for shirts for Tom Selleck on the 1980s TV series Magnum, P.I. We will have the opportunity to learn more about designing and printing this beautiful fabric while we tour the facility. Our next stop for the day is Flying Geese Quilt Shop (www. flyinggeesefabric.com) in historic Old Town Tustin. The shop has a great selection of both reproduction and modern fabrics, as well as their special hand dyed felted wool. You are sure to find inspiration and a cup of coffee. Lunch at the Souplantation is always fun. Something for everyone! Soup, salad, and some yummy desserts! Lunch is not included in the tour price. After lunch well visit the Kellogg House, designed by Hiram Clay Kellogg, Built in 1898 it is set amid extensive floral gardens and citrus trees. With its asymmetrical shape, faux tower, and prominently decorated dormer, the house is a late example of Queen Anne-style Victorian architecture. The interior of the house has several unusual features that reflect Kelloggs keen interest in ships. Most prominent is the mast, salvaged from a ship in San Francisco that stretches from floor to ceiling in the center of the house. The spiral staircase surrounding it features a landing overlooking the oval dining room that is reminiscent of the bridge of a ship. And the wooden-railed circular opening in the attic floor, through which the mast extends to the roof, suggests a ships crows nest. Quilters Garden (www.quiltersgarden.org) is our last stop for the day. Located in Anaheim, this shop has a large selection of fabrics. Whatever youre looking for, youre bound to find it here. Batiks, brights, flannels, reproductions, solids and lots of blender fabrics. They have a nice selection of current book titles and numerous patterns with many samples made and hanging in the store. Please note that because we will be touring around the warehouse at Robert Kaufman, they ask everyone to wear close-toed shoes for safety. Born in 1899, Robert Kaufman emigrated from Russia and settled in New York. He first had a successful menswear company, but by 1942 he was operating from a showroom on 5th Avenue in New York City where he began the company that exists today. He and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1944 where he restarted his company, focusing on fabric for clothing. In the 1980s the company began to market fabric for the growing quilting community. Today they operate two separate design studios, each one generating fabrics specific to the quilting and manufacturing customer. Robert Kaufman also employs a large family of talented signature artists that supply innovative exclusive collections to the line. Robert Kaufmans sons are still involved in the business their father began along with their sons and cousins. Robert Kaufman Fabrics offers an extensive supply of cotton prints, novelty fabrics, yarn-dyes and solids, covering a full assortment of woven fabric offerings such as poplin, twill, denim, corduroy, linen, canvas, crepe, voile, lawn, satin, georgette, flannel, organza, chenille, stretch wovens, plaids, stripes, etc. After our morning tour of the Robert Kaufman studios youll be ready for lunch at the world famous Los Angeles Original Farmers Market. Quilt ApprAisAls

Protect your valued quilts, both old and new, with an appraisal by professional appraisers certified by the American Quilters Society. It is essential if you want a fair replacement value for a lost, stolen or damaged quilt from an insurance company. This is as important for quilts that you have just made, as well as older quilts. The cost of a written appraisal is $50 per quilt and a verbal evaluation is $25. Please contact Julia Zgliniec (rzglini1@san.rr.com) for those wishing to schedule an apprasial. Details for appraisals of quilts hanging in the show will be mailed with acceptance letters. Please note: fees are subject to change.
