Classics flooded by Sandy, waiting for salvage lot saviors at auction

Two months ago, I wrote about the first wave of classic cars caught in superstorm Sandy's floods totaled by insurance companies and sent to East Coast salvage yards, for those who believe there's something worth keeping on a forty-year-old machine dunked in brackish waters. A browse through Copart's online listing this week shows that the crowd of Sandydamaged classics has grown to number in the hundreds, ranging from old Packards to modern Ferraris. The crusher shouldn't be their only destination. With more than 230,000 vehicles damaged by Sandy, the nation's insurers have been busy for months triaging the damage; many of those vehicles will be crushed, while some will be stripped for salvageable spare parts. A single dip in salt water can provide years of damage to a modern car, sprouting rust throughout the body, mold in all fabrics and corrosion on key electronic parts. The story's a little different for classics. Take the '60s-era Chevy Corvettes in the New York and New Jersey lots; one 1967 Sting Ray valued at $81,000 before the storm suffered an estimated $60,000 in damage. Even without an engine, bidding for its body has reached $23,000. The 1988 Ferrari Testarossa shown above was valued at $50,000, see Classics page 4

Hostess Said to Pick Apollo, Metropoulos as Lead Cake Bid

Bloomberg News Brands Inc., the bankrupt maker of Wonder bread and Twinkies, picked the team of Apollo Global Management LLC (APO) and C. Dean Metropoulos & Co. as the lead bidder for its cake brands. The assets include some facilities The offer becomes the so-called stalking horse for an auction of the cakes business, meaning it sets the standard that other suitors have to beat. Hostesss cake products include CupCakes, Ding Dongs and Ho Hos. Hostess announced plans to liquidate in November after failing to reach an agreement with its striking bakers union on concessions. The Irving, Texas-based company filed for Chapter 11 protection again in January 2012. Flowers Foods Inc., the Thomasville, Georgia-based owner of brands including Natures Own and Tastykake, was earlier selected as the stalking-horse bidder for most of Hostesss bread brands with a $360 million offer. Flowers is also the stalking-horse bidder for Hostesss Beefsteak bread brand with a $30 million bid. That auction is scheduled for Feb. 28. Hostess said United States Bakery Inc. offered to buy some other bread brands for $28.9 million while McKee Foods Corp., maker of Little Debbie snacks, agreed to pay $27.5 million for its Drakes brand.

"Pow!" "Zap!" "Kaboom!" Batmobile sold for $4.62 million at auction

Two classic Ferrari roadsters and the original Batmobile were among the star lots during a week of car auctions in Arizona that raised more than $200 million. The Batmobile sold for $4.62 million in Scottsdale as Batman fans and automobile collectors joined the events. The vehicle from the 1960s Adam West TV show ("Pow!" "Zap!" "Kaboom!") was joined onstage at the Barrett-Jackson sale by its creator, George Barris, who had previously vowed never to sell it. Earlier, the two Ferraris sold for more than $8 million each, leading auctions that also included Lamborghinis, Porsches, Bugattis and Aston Martins. The sales, held by five auction houses, generated an aggregate $223.8 million with fees, according to Hagerty, a U.S.based classic car price database. The total was $39.9 million higher than last year, it said. "These sales defied financia l gravity," Simon Kidston, founder of the Genevabased classic car adviser Kidston, said in an interview from Arizona. "There are a lot of people squirreling away money in classic cars at the moment. They see auction results that suggest the market is holding up, and they like the kudos of taking cars to events where they meet like- minded people who are comfortably off." The Batmobile was adapted by Barris in 1966 from a Ford concept car called the Lincoln Futura, a bubble-windowed coupe handbuilt in Italy. Though it didn't carry a formal estimate, dealers said that it might fetch as much as $5 million on Jan. 19. Barrett-Jackson's weeklong series of sales, from Jan. 13- 20, took $102.5 million from 1,340 offered cars. Just four were left unsold. The 500-horsepower custom car has a fake jet exhaust in the back (a painted 10-gallon bucket), a Batphone and two packed parachutes that actually work, used to effect a "Bat turn." The Caped Crusader's cruiser is almost 20 feet long and has controls for vari

ous imaginary James Bond-like gadgets on the dash. They include oil slicks, an ejector, rockets, nails and an antitheft system. During the TV show, which ran from

1966 to 1968, molds were made from the original and some half dozen fiberglass replicas were created for stunt work and promotional events. In 2007, one sold at auction for $233,000.

but rebuilding its engine and hard-tosource electronics may be beyond the willpower of even the most ardent Miami Vice fan. Sandy's floods didn't discriminate, claiming MGBs and Pontiac GTOs alike. There's enough Ford hot-rods and Chevy BelAirs in these lots to restage "American Graffiti," and of all the cars in the database, the idea of a 1969 Jaguar XKE with little visible water damage getting chopped for parts leaves me sad enough to skim the kids' college fund. (Salvage cars are sold as-is, and can be a hassle to drive legally even if they're mechanically copacetic.) The oldest car in the mix the 1928 Packard Six coupe, complete with rusty water sloshing in one of its driving lights might be the one I'm most certain will be saved by a caring collector. It's simple enough to disassemble and clean; it's engine likely didn't suck in any water, and there's enough Packard enthusiasts across the country to provide the know-how and spare parts to get it running again. There's a reason some cars survive 85 years.
