Genesis 6-8

January 30, 2013 Weve come to the story of the flood which some people think this is a do-over for God, but we believe that Hes sovereign and that this is all according to schedule. It is literally and historically true, but it has a greater meaning than just the history. In the New Testament Peter tells his readers: If God [] spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; [] 9The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished (II Pt. 2:5, 9). If God knew how to judge those wicked people and how to save that righteous man then we know well be okay too. They were being mocked and persecuted for their faith and he reminds them: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men (II Pt. 3:3-7). Their day is coming so dont lose hope! But this story is also one of redemption: For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 22Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him (I Pt. 3:18-22). Here are the main points throughout these three chapters: 1. All men were wicked and violent (6:1-5) 2. Their sin grieved the Lord so that He determined to destroy them all (6:6-7)

3. But Noah was in Christ and had received His righteousness so God determined to save Him (6:8-8:14) 4. After being saved Noah offered burnt offerings to God (8:15-20) 5. God was pleased with the offerings and promised to never again curse the ground or destroy all flesh until the end of the earth comes This little outline shows how the story of the flood is a type. We live in wicked times but we take heart knowing that God will punish the wicked and deliver the godly. The ark was the only place of refuge in the whole world just as Christ is our only place. It may seem like a long time until He returns but we know His coming is sure! newgracebaptistchurch.wordpress.com
