Despus de la aterradora presencia de Sandy, el ltimo huracn que golpe la costa este de los Estados Unidos dejando a su paso a miles de personas en muy mala situacin en nuestros estados vecinos, y logr poner en jaque a la ciudad de New York, vivimos el terremoto poltico que signific la re-eleccin de Barack Obama el pasado 6 de noviembre. A primera hora del da siguiente recib un mensaje de texto compartiendo la buena nueva y mi amigo mencionaba que: ahora s van a aprobar la reforma migratoria, y eso me puso a pensar sobre esa posibilidad, y la verdad es que tengo mis dudas al respecto. Ya han pasado cuatro aos y de todas las maneras posibles esa iniciativa ha sido entorpecida, y como se ha visto en los resultados de las elecciones, los adversarios del presidente continan manteniendo el control de la casa de representantes, precisamente el lugar donde se ha trabado el proceso de reforma migratoria. Por otra parte es muy significativo que el voto hispano haya sido en un 70% para Obama, lo que podra insinuar que los hispanos confan que esta vez el presidente ponga en movimiento el cambio que ofreci hace 4 aos atrs. Varios comentaristas en esas largas horas de espera por los resultados electorales mencionaban cmo el no apoyar el Dream Act por parte de Mitt Romney lo habra condenado ante el electorado hispano, y no les falta razn cuando vemos los nmeros finales. Ahora, otra cosa es que el voto latino haya sido o no la clave para la victoria del ganador. A esto ltimo habra que ponerle ms lupa que las pocas horas que han pasado desde las votaciones. Llama tambin la atencin la participacin de los jvenes entre 18 y 29 aos que esta vez sumaron casi el 20% de los votos y en su inmensa mayora apoyaron el proyecto de Obama, est claro que tienen confianza en tener un mejor futuro con este hombre En los das por venir se diseccionara al detalle todo el proceso que cost ms de 3 billones de dlares, pero a mi entender, lo que s queda claro es que los norteamericanos le han dado un voto de confianza a Obama y que esta vez los dos principales partidos podran trabajar juntos para avanzar en algunas reformas. En cuanto a Delaware, la hegemona demcrata se mantuvo y la comunidad hispana celebra el hecho de que, por primera vez en al historia cuatro hispanos, dos demcratas en la ciudad de Wilmington (Cabrera y Prado) aseguraron su silla en el consejo de la ciudad, y dos republicanos (Miro y Lpez) ocuparn cargos en la Cmara de Representantes del estado. En hora buena para todos y a trabajar se ha dicho.

After the terrifying presence of Sandy, the last hurricane to hit the east coast of the United States, leaving behind thousands of people in a very bad situation in our neighboring states, and managing to put in check the city of New York, we lived the political earthquake that meant the re-election of Barack Obama on November 6. Early the next day I received a text message sharing the good news and my friend mentioned that this time they will pass the immigration reform, which got me thinking about that possibility, and to tell you the truth, I have my doubts. Its been four years and in every possible way this initiative has been hindered, and as seen in the results of the election, opponents of the President continue to maintain control of the House of Representatives, precisely where the immigration reform process has been locked. Moreover it is very significant that the Hispanic vote has been 70% for Obama, which could suggest that Hispanics trust that this time the president will set in motion the change offered 4 years ago. Several commentators in those long waiting hours for the election results mentioned how not supporting the Dream Act on Mitt Romneys behalf would have condemned him before the Hispanic electorate, and they were right when we see the final numbers. Now, another thing is that the Latino vote was or not the key to the victory of the winner. Regarding the latter, we have to look into it with more detail than the few hours passed since the elections. It is also noteworthy the participation of young people between 18 and 29 years, which this time accounted for nearly 20% of the vote and overwhelmingly supported the Obama project, it is clear that they are confident they will have a better future with this man. In the days ahead the whole process that cost more than $ 3 billion will be dissected in detail, but in my opinion, what is clear is that Americans have given a vote of confidence to Obama and that this time the two major parties could work together to advance some reforms. As for Delaware, Democratic hegemony was maintained and the Hispanic community celebrates the fact that, for the first time in history, four Hispanics, two Democrats in the city of Wilmington (Cabrera and Prado) secured their seats on the city council, and two Republicans (Miro and Lopez) will hold positions in the state House of Representatives. Congratulations to all and lets get to work!

Un Punto de Vista A Matter Of View

A medida que nuestra nacin se enfrenta a elecciones presidenciales y ahora espera el resultado oficial de la victoria proyectada y la re-eleccin del presidente Obama, slo puedo pensar en donde estaba hace una semana. Es difcil creer que hace slo una semana se me permiti regresar a mi casa despus del camino de destruccin dejado por el huracn Sandy. El domingo 28 de noviembre tuvimos una evacuacin obligatoria debido a la ubicacin del lugar donde vivo y la trayectoria proyectada donde Sandy tocara tierra, y mi casa estaba justo en medio de todo. Yo vivo justo en la zona costera, en una pequea casa sobre alambiques, a la que he apodado la casita del rbol. En una noche clara, desde la terraza del jardn de mi casa, puedo ver las luces parpadeantes de un faro situado en Nueva Jersey. Me siento verdaderamente bendecida de poder disfrutar de los amaneceres y puestas de sol ms impresionantes, pero tambin s que estoy muy expuesta a los elementos. Somos una comunidad muy pequea de vecinos que nos ocupamos los unos de los otros y cuando recibimos la orden de evacuar, todos nos ayudamos mutuamente a prepararnos para lo desconocido. Tengo que ser honesta, pero yo estaba entumecida emocionalmente y de forma autmata me prepar para el huracn, no pensando realmente en lo que podra suceder o lo que podra significar para m y mi familia. Con gran fuerza interior, fe y esperanza, empaqu mi auto con las cosas materiales que son importantes para m y que yo sepa que no pueden ser remplazadas. Mis dos perros y mis tres gatos, mi auto lleno hasta el tope. Mientras me alejaba, una lgrima rod por mi rostro, pensar en lo desconocido y la realidad de lo que se podra ser, lentamente se apoder de mi mente y de mi corazn. Durante dos noches, me aloj en un hotel que acepta mascotas con muchas otras familias que tenan evacuacin obligatoria igual que yo. Nunca perdimos la electricidad, pero el viento y la lluvia eran feroces. Me sorprende cmo personas que no se conocen pueden unirse y apoyarse mutuamente en tiempos de incertidumbre. Al medioda del martes 30, recib la llamada dicindome que poda volver a casa. Tuve sentimientos encontrados, y me sent muy contenta de volver a casa, pero insegura de lo que podra encontrar cuando llegara. Era como si todas mis oraciones fueron escuchadas mientras me acercaba, mi casita en el rbol estaba all y no hubo daos. Hemos esquivado sta, pero Nueva Jersey y Nueva York estaban bajo la ira de Sandy. Las imgenes de los daos que estos dos estados han sufrido me deja sin palabras, pero mi corazn est con todas aquellas familias que han sufrido la prdida de vidas y la prdida de sus hogares y todas sus pertenencias materiales. Es hora de echar una mano y yo he estado ayudando a hacer paquetes de ayuda que contienen alimentos e insumos (care-packages). Para muchos, la espera comienza con la reconstruccin de sus vidas. Me siento bendecida por haberme salvado. Cmo ayudars t? Qu ests esperando?
Awaiting
As our nation faces presidential elections and now awaits the official result of the projected win and re-election of President Obama; I can only think where I was a week ago. It is hard to believe that only a week ago I was allowed to return to my home after hurricane Sandys path of destruction. On Sunday November 28th we had a mandatory evacuation because of the location of where I live and the projected path where Sandy would hit and my home was right smack in the middle of it. I live right in the coastal area, on a small house that sits on stills, which I nicknamed the tree house. On a clear night, from my backyards deck, I can see the flickering lights of a lighthouse located in New Jersey. I am truly blessed to enjoy the most amazing sunrises and sunsets, but I also know that I am very exposed to the elements. We are a very small community of homes that looks after each other and when the word was to evacuate, we all helped each other to prepare for the unknown. I have to be honest, but I was emotionally numbed and just went through the motions of getting ready for the hurricane and not truly thinking of what could happen or what could be for me and my family. With much inner strength, faith and hope, I packed my car up with those materials things that are important to me and which I know that they cant be replaced. My two dogs and my three cats, filled the car up to the top. As I drove off, a tear rolled down my face, just thinking of the unknown and the reality of what it could be was finding its way in my mind and heart. For two nights, I stayed in a pet-friendly hotel with many other families that had mandatory evacuation just as I did. We never lost electricity, but the wind and rain were fierce! I am amazed as to how people that are complete strangers; can come together and give each other support in times of uncertainty. At mid-day on Tuesday 30th, I received the call that I could return home. I had mixed emotions, and feeling very happy to go home, but feeling unsure of what I could find when I arrived home. It was like all my prayers were heard and as I drove closer, my tree house was there and no damages were experienced. We dodged this one, but New Jersey and New York were under the wrath of Sandy. The images of the damages that these two states have endured leave me speechless, but my heart goes to all those families that have endured the loss of lives and the loss of their homes and all their material belongings. It is time to lend a hand and I have been helping making care-packages. For many, the awaiting commences in the rebuilding of their lives. I am blessed for being spared. How will you be helping? DO IMMIGRANTS STEAL JOBS? By Raoul Lowery Contreras Predating myriad anti-immigrant and anti-Mexican groups fostered and nurtured by and through the Internet, there were groups founded by the USAs most dangerous bigoted Mexican-hater of all time, Dr. John Tanton of Michigan, former Sierra Club big wig and former President of ultra-left Zero Population groups active in ending immigration to the U.S. based on a foundation of skin color and religion. Some of the groups he founded with money from the Pioneer Fund, a totally discredited pseudo-intellectual/scientific racist group are the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), U.S. English (an English-only group), NumbersUSA (Roy Beck), the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) and the Social Contract Press, a quarterly scholarly publication. These groups and the Press are characterized by the Southern Poverty Law Center: As long ago as 1988, a set of his (Tanton) internal memoranda to the staffs of two groups he founded FAIR and U.S. English were leaked and showed Tanton warning of a coming Latin onslaught, questioning whether Latinos were as educable as others, and worrying that Latinos were outbreeding (sic) whites. A decade later, he told a reporter that whites would soon develop a racial consciousness, and the result would be the war of all against all. He (Tanton) hired and worked alongside Wayne Lutton, who has held leadership positions in four white supremacist hate groups. He published and endorsed a racist book on immigration, and he published numerous white supremacists. Tanton compared immigrants to bacteria that will continue growing until the population crashes, and sneered at immigrants defecating and creating garbage and looking for jobs. CIS and NumbersUSA have become relatively well-known Tanton groups that strive for respectability and do so with research and reports that purport to be scholarly and scientific but in reality are pure CRAP! For example, of late CIS (and Ed Rubenstein of Vdare) has issued a number of memos claiming that immigrants (legal and illegal) have taken all new jobs created in the modest new Obama job market creeping slowly across the country in the era of higher-than-8-percent unemployment. Thus, they say, Americans are being shoved aside by immigrants who are taking/stealing those jobs from American citizens. When experts on the labor market suggest that such is not the case, the CIS memo writers like Executive Director Mark Krikorian (a former head staffer at FAIR) react with bile and assault anyone that contradicts their shoddy and unsupported studies and memos. An emotionally blinded Krikorian: Tell that to the 23 million Americans who are unemployed, forced to settle for part-time work, or gave up looking for work altogether. Wow! Superficially, that sounds like a total indictment of immigrants getting jobs all together. In other words every time an immigrant gets a job, an American is either thrown out of work or must remain unemployed or underemployed because the immigrant gets a job. That is not true for several reasons. First, there is labor mobility. Immigrants tend to go to population centers where there are always jobs. And, because they travel light, they can move quickly because they are generally not tied down with mortgages, long-standing relationships and all the things that keep citizens emotionally/economically tied down. Secondly, immigrants will do any job. They tend not to be prejudiced towards job categories many Americans used to do. Has anyone heard of Japanese gardeners lately? Their children have become doctors, dentists and scientists. Gardeners now almost all speak Spanish. Heres how points one and two merge. In Hurricane Katrinas aftermath and its flood devastation in and around New Orleans and Mississippi, billions of government and insurance dollars flooded the devastated area. There were few New Orleans residents that wanted to clean up, to rebuild, nor did all the unemployed Rust Belt Americans drop everything and rush to New Orleans. Who did? Mexicans, legal and illegal, flooded into New Orleans and Mississippi to clean up and rebuild. The following year I met an FBI Special Agent from New Orleans at a conference. I asked about his post-Katrina experience. His house was destroyed by the flood. Working with architects and he quickly prepared plans for a new residence, got them approved by the various government agencies involved, then asked for construction bids. He dealt with bids for weeks; gave up the effort, took time off from the FBI, became his own General Contractor and hired Mexicans that were experienced carpenters, builders and construction workers and built his house and had it pass inspection within six weeks. When I asked him if he, a federal-badge carrying high-ranking federal officer checked the workers for legal ability to be in and legally work in the United States, he laughed and said Hell No. I wanted a house, not a year-long project. Deferred Action delivers the Latino Vote President Obama must deliver more DREAMers a Key Factor in Galvanizing Latino Voter Enthusiasm Latino voters came out to vote in record numbers clearly knowing what was at stake. Immigrant youth, the DREAMers, waged a fearless campaign to force the DREAM Act onto the political agenda and to convince the President to offer them protection from deportation a move that 58 percent of Latino voters said made them more enthusiastic about voting for President Obama, who won the Latino vote by a record breaking 75% / 23% margin among Latinos according to a new poll by Latino Decisions, after seeing lukewarm enthusiasm earlier this year. Mitt Romneys vow to veto the DREAM Act defined him and the Republican Party in the eyes of Latino voters and his vow to end the DREAMer Deferred Action program sealed the deal. With the program at risk, Latinos casted their ballots in favor of candidates who support pro-immigrant legislation. The Latino community delivered for President Obama and the Democrats after the President delivered for DREAMers. The unprecedented impact of DREAMers and the Latino vote this year was apparent in states like Colorado, Nevada, and Florida, where their support made the crucial difference in President Obamas re-election. We are determined to protect Deferred Action and to continue engaging our communities. November is National Adoption Month

DE Childrens Department Highlights Children in Need of Loving Homes
Currently there are 90 children in foster care in Delaware ready and waiting to be adopted. Just under half will be able to be adopted by relatives or their foster families, leaving 50 more on any given day looking for permanent families to provide them with the love, support and nurturing they need. Thats why the Delaware Childrens Department is partnering with public and private adoption agencies, the Family Court, the Child Placement Review Board, community partners and adoptive families to celebrate National Adoption Month. All children deserve to grow up in a loving family, said Governor Jack Markell. As we enter the holiday season, I can think of no better gift to give these children, than the gift of a permanent home. During the month of November, the Delaware Childrens Department will feature profiles of several children who are legally ready for adoption placement. Profiles of many more can be found in the Heart Gallery section of our website at http://kids. delaware.gov/heartgallery/heartgallery.shtml. Each one of our children is unique and has his/her own personalities, special talents, and passions, said Vivian Rapposelli, Secretary for the Delaware Childrens Department. Thats why providing them with the opportunity for permanent placement through adoptive services is so critical. In a stable family setting is where they can and achieve their full potential. Additionally, the Departments Division of Family Services is helping to coordinate two events designed to bring awareness of the importance of adoption in the First State. The first of these events is the Achieving Permanency for Children in Foster Care Summit on November the 16th in Wilmington. The goal of the Summit, intended for individuals in the adoption, foster care, independent living fields, and legal community, is to improve permanency outcomes for children in foster care and share practices and policies that work. The second event is being held in conjunction with National Adoption Day on Saturday November 17th, from 9 a.m. 3 pm at the Delaware Technical & Community College (Terry Campus, Dover) Conference Center. This event, now in its fifth year in Delaware, provides interested individuals with information regarding adoption services, programs, and procedures. It also serves as a celebration and recognition of the 99 adoptions that were finalized in 2011. There will be workshops in the morning and afternoon, vendors with information on adoption services, and portraits/profiles from children who are looking for permanent homes. El evento present comida internacional preparada por el Departamento de Artes Culinarias y Servicios de Alimentos de Delaware Tech. Con ms de 100 participantes, el evento recaud ms de $ 5.000 para becas para estudios en el extranjero para aquellos que de otra manera no podran tener la oportunidad de ampliar sus horizontes educativos. Los asistentes disfrutaron de comida y bebidas de Alemania, Espaa, China y Mxico. El entretenimiento fue proporcionada por los Fabulous 49ers. Delaware Tech Raises Funds for Study Abroad Scholarships at Flavors of the World Fundraiser
On Saturday, October 13, 2012, Delaware Techs Stanton and Wilmington Campuses hosted its 2nd annual Flavors of the World Food and Wine Tasting event. The event showcased international cuisine prepared by the Delaware Tech Culinary Arts and Food Service Management Departments. With over 100 participants, the event raised more than $5,000 for study abroad scholarships for those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to broaden their educational horizons. Attendees enjoyed food and drinks from Germany, Spain, China and Mexico. Entertainment was provided by the Fabulous 49ers. Flavors of the World is a fun night that supports a great cause giving Delaware Tech students the chance to explore a new culture, said Bruce Thorngate, international education coordinator, instructor and Flavors of the World Co-chair. Delaware Techs International Education Program promotes international awareness and global understanding amongst students, faculty, and community members. The school offers study abroad programs, student and faculty exchanges, cross-cultural research and collaboration, and campus events to promote global engagement. The Study Abroad program afforded me the luxury of being able to travel to China. This was the perfect forum in which to experience a different culture, said Juli Codding, a Delaware Tech student who travelled to China in May 2012. Everything was planned from guides that were able to translate for us to visits to other colleges and universities. We had an action-packed 10 days filled with natural and man-made wonders and ancient architecture to state-of-the-art engineering. El Banco de Alimentos de Delaware anuncia los ganadores del segundo concurso anual DelawareCAN
Una rebanada de pastel de nuez (peCAN pie slice), una rplica del puente Delaware Memorial, una mazorca de maz de siete pies y otras estructuras hechas de alimentos no perecederos fueron algunos de los ganadores de la segunda competencia anual DelawareCAN del Banco de Alimentos de Delaware. En un esfuerzo para ayudar a abastecer los estantes del banco de alimentos, y asegurar que los residentes de Delaware con hambre tengan acceso a alimentos sanos, el Banco de Alimentos de Delaware lanz su segundo concurso anual DelawareCAN a mediados de septiembre. Food Bank of Delaware declares winners of second annual DelawareCAN contest
A slice of peCAN pie, a replica of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, a seven-foot ear of corn and other structures made of nonperishable foods were among the winners of the Food Bank of Delawares second annual DelawareCAN competition. In an effort to help stock the food banks shelves and ensure that hungry Delawareans have access to healthy foods, the Food Bank of Delaware launched its second annual DelawareCAN competition in mid-September. The competition provided a creative way to collect much needed food and create a spirited competition in Delawares business community. Companies held food drives and competed to create sculptures out of the food items collected. In total, the Food Bank of Delaware received more than 30,000 pounds through the DelawareCAN competition. The following Delaware businesses were declared winners by the Food Bank of Delawares panel of five judges. The Peoples Choice Award was chosen by the Food Bank of Delawares Facebook fans. El escritor peruano participar en tres eventos abiertos al pblico, que forman parte de los Encuentros Transnacionales con autores destacados del panorama literario internacional, que la Universidad est llevando a cabo gracias a la generosa participacin del Centro de Investigaciones Interdisciplinarias en Humanidades, perteneciente a la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias. El 13 de noviembre, a las 5:00 de la tarde, en el Clayton Hall Auditorium, Vargas Llosa pronunciar su conferencia magistral sobre los encuentros transnacionales. El 14 de noviembre, en el Trabant Theatre, participar en una lectura de fragmentos de sus obras ms relevantes, en espaol a las 11:00 de la maana y en ingls a las 2:30 de la tarde. Adems, el 13 de noviembre, a las 3:00 de la tarde, en el Trabant Theatre, el Dr. ngel Esteban, especialista en la obra de Vargas Llosa, pronunciar una conferencia acerca de su vida y su obra literaria. Mario Vargas Llosa es uno de los escritores e intelectuales ms importantes de nuestro tiempo. En 2010, cuando la Academia Sueca anunci la concesin del Premio al narrador peruano, puso el nfasis en la cartografa de las estructuras del poder y aceradas imgenes de la resistencia, la rebelin y la derrota del individuo, como caracterstica fundamental de su pensamiento literario. Con ms de 150 premios literarios y casi 50 doctorados Honoris Causa, es autor de unas sesenta obras entre novelas, ensayos, libros de cuentos y obras dramticas. Adems, publica un artculo semanal en los peridicos ms prestigiosos de Europa y Amrica. Sus temas desarrollan aspectos relacionados con la sociedad peruana y latinoamericana, y tambin recorren los problemas fundamentales de la condicin humana, como son el ansia de felicidad, la existencia omnipresente del mal en el mundo, la ambicin desmedida y los deseos ms inconfesables de la gente corriente. Todos los eventos en los que participar el Premio Nobel Mario Vargas Llosa han sido organizados y patrocinados por el Departamento de Lenguas y Literaturas Extranjeras, con una ayuda adicional del Centro de Estudios Regionales y Globales, el Instituto de Estudios Globales, el Instituto de Lengua Inglesa, el Departamento de Historia y el Departamento de Ciencias Polticas y Relaciones Internacionales de la Universidad de Delaware.

Peruvian writer and Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosas visit to the University of Delaware and surrounding events are part of the Transnational Encounters visiting authors series made possible through a cornerstone grant from the College of Arts & Sciences Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Center (IHRC). On November 13, at 5:00 pm, in the Clayton Hall Auditorium Dr. Vargas Llosa will deliver his keynote address on the theme of transnational encounters. On November 14, in the Trabant Theatre he will participate in a reading of excerpts from his works in Spanish at 11:00 AM and in English at 2:30 PM. In addition, on November 13 at 3:00 PM in the Trabant Theatre, Dr. ngel Esteban, a leading specialist on Vargas Llosa, will deliver a presentation on the authors life and works. Mario Vargas Llosa is one of the leading writers and intellectuals of our time. In 2010 when the Swedish Academy announced Vargas Llosas award, they cited his cartography of the structures of power and his trenchant images of the individuals resistance, revolt and defeat. With more than 150 literary prizes and nearly 50 honorary doctorates, he is the author of over sixty works including novels, essays, short story collections, and dramatic works. Flowers, fruits, lit candles, a crucifix, a Bible, bread for the souls decorated with crosses, prayer cards, photos of the deceased, and other meaningful symbols are placed on these humble and beautiful altarcitos. Latinos have brought this tradition North, a great gift to mainstreamers. These meaningful altarcitos can be found in many homes and churches here in the Delmarva Peninsula. Se dedican a producir accesorios para mujer, la cosa empez cuando una amiga vio algunas fotos mas en Facebook y me pregunt que dnde haba comprado una pulsera que llevaba en una foto y le respond: es que la hice yo. Mi amiga me dijo, pues chica debes dedicarte a hacerlas en serio y as empez la empresa en la que trabaja con su madre, ella en Delaware y su madre Victoria en Madrid: Sira y Mara. Lo que empez como un entretenimiento pas a ser un negocio en serio, nos esmeramos en buscar buenos materiales a precios accesibles de tal manera de que nuestros productos puedan estar al alcance de cualquiera. Su estrategia ha sido usar el internet, los blog de modas en ambos lados del Atlntico, a muchos ni los conocemos personalmente, pero les ha gustado lo que producimos y hemos tenido una buena respuesta, nos han hecho buena publicidad, agrega con una sonrisa. Sandy piensa que lo que ellas han logrado, usando las redes sociales y las pginas de internet, es una muestra de que con creatividad es posible llegar lejos. 1,2 millones de hispanos en los Estados Unidos estn en riesgo de perder su visin por causa de la diabetes.
La diabetes afecta a casi 26 millones de personas en los Estados Unidos. Adems, se estima que otros 79 millones de personas tienen pre diabetes, una condicin que pone a las personas en mayor riesgo de desarrollar diabetes. Estas cifras incluyen a muchos hispanos/latinos con diabetes. Diabetes affects nearly 26 million people in the United States. In addition, another 79 million people are estimated to have pre-diabetes, a condition that puts people at increased risk for diabetes. Many Hispanics/Latinos are included in these statistics. All people with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, are at risk for diabetic eye disease, a leading cause of vision loss and blindness. Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of the disease and includes cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye disease, is the leading cause of blindness in adults 2074 years of age. According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), 1.2 million Hispanics/Latinos have diabetic retinopathy and this number is projected to increase to approximately 3 million people by 2030. The longer a person has diabetes the greater is his or her risk of developing diabetic eye disease, said Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., director of the NEI. If you have diabetes, be sure to have a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. Diabetic eye disease often has no early warning signs, but can be detected early and treated before vision loss occurs. Dont wait until you notice an eye problem to have an exam because vision that is lost often cannot be restored. While all people with diabetes can develop diabetic eye disease, Hispanics/Latinos, African Americans, and American Indians/ Alaska Natives with diabetes are at higher risk of losing vision or going blind from it. All people with diabetes should have a dilated eye exam at least once a year to detect vision problems early. In fact, with early detection, timely laser surgery, and appropriate follow-up care, people with advanced diabetic retinopathy can reduce their risk of blindness by 90 percent, adds Suber Huang, M.D., M.B.A., chair of the Diabetic Eye Disease Subcommittee for the NEIs National Eye Health Education Program. Research has shown that when people with diabetes maintain good control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol they can slow the development and progression of diabetic eye disease. In addition to having annual comprehensive dilated eye exams, people with diabetes should do the following to keep their health on TRACK: Take your medications. Reach and maintain a healthy weight. Add physical activity to your daily routine. Control your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Kick the smoking habit. NEI supports more than $40 million in diabetes research and outreach, including the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR.net), a collaboration of more than 300 physicians at more than 100 clinical sites across the United States. Wilmington Renaissance Corporation (WRC) is pleased to announce the winner of the AZ Challenge that was part of the activities held at the 2012 Downtown Fall Fitness Fest in Rodney Square on Saturday, November 3. The free family-friendly event emphasized the importance of health and wellness while promoting family activity. It also showcased the safe, fun, family atmosphere in Downtown Wilmington. Thirty-one different schools/nonprofits participated in the Downtown Fitness Festivals AZ Challenge. The winning school receives $500 towards a school project of its choice. Tenemos que aceptar que no todo el mundo nos va a gustar o llevarse bien con nosotros. Inevitablemente, es posible que tenga una opinin distinta a la otra persona. Es entonces cuando sus habilidades para lidiar con los conflictos entran en juego. Usted podra estar en una tienda y el cajero puede ser grosero, mientras procesa su venta. Todos hemos tenido que pasar por eso por lo menos una vez, no? Nuestra primera reaccin podra ser la de tirar el dinero sobre el mostrador o devolver la rudeza de alguna forma. En ese instante hemos tomado sus problemas como propios y hemos creado una situacin de estrs que puede cambiar el tono del resto de nuestros das. Sin embargo, esto slo sucede si nosotros lo permitimos. A continuacin les presento cinco consejos, sugeridos por la autora Hazel Palache, que funcionan con los compaeros de trabajo, familiares, amigos e incluso extraos. Tips to Deal with Conflict

Conflict is an unavoidable part of our lives but we can prepare to handle it successfully.
We have to accept that not everyone is going to like us or get along with us. Inevitably, you might have a different opinion than someone else. This is when your skills to deal with conflict come into play. You might be in a store and the cashier may be rude while they ring up your sale. Weve all had that happen at least once, right? The first reaction might be to slam the money on the counter or to snap back at them. In that instant we have taken their problems as our own and created a stressful situation that can change the tone of the rest of our day. However, this only happens if we allow it. These five tips, suggested by author Hazel Palache, which work for coworkers, family members, friends, and even strangers. You never know when the proper response to a conflict could save you or someone else from having lots of stress. 1. Decide in advance how you intend to deal with any kind of conflict or disagreement that comes up. Sometimes we are quick to respond when someone says something we dont like or dont agree with. If youve given this some thought in advance and have been mastering your thinking you will know you dont have to get defensive. First take a deep breath before responding. In that few seconds think about the words that were said so you can answer calmly without getting angry or defensive. 2. In many cases, the conflict that comes up is not the first of its kind. Harsh or offensive words might be a recurring theme in the relationship. Decide if this connection is worth holding on to or if its time to let go of the relationship. 3. You dont have to respond right then. You can always say I need to think about that, let me give you the answer later. Give yourself time to talk over the situation with a trusted friend. Maybe you took what was said the wrong way. Sometimes, a third party can see something that you missed in the heat of your anger. Be big enough to apologize where necessary. If the consensus is that you were wronged then bring the matter to the attention of the other person with a level head and non-attacking kind of words. 4. Just because something is true doesnt mean it has to be said. Telling someone that they are wearing a dress that is too small for them is not a positive way to help them lose weight. Understand how it could be offensive to them and apologize. Better yet, stop and think before you respond in situations such as these. Put yourself in the other persons shoes. Part of resolving conflicts is realizing your role in it and how you can if you wish have the power not to get sucked in to something that could turn into chaos. 5. One of the best things I learned over the years if theres a disagreement is to say I dont think I agree with you but you could of course be right! Generally this will stop the conflict from going any further. The Delaware Office of Highway Safety has teamed up with the U.S. Department of Transportations National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and 42 law enforcement agencies across the State to eliminate handheld cell phone use and texting by motorists traveling on Delawares roadways. Beginning November 7 through November 20, Delaware law enforcement will be out in force to make sure drivers keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. Reducing distracted driving improves safety for everyone who shares the road. Just as we keep our focus as a state on creating more jobs, we want drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and their focus on the road, Governor Markell said. Distracted driving is any non-driving activity a person engages in behind the wheel that has the potential to distract him or her from the primary task of driving. Nationally in 2010, 3,092 people were killed, and an estimated 416,000 others were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Talking or texting on a cell phone while driving is one of the most dangerous actions you can take on our roadways. Last year, 147 crashes were due to distracted driving. Our new dedicated enforcement campaign, Phone in One Hand. Ticket in the Other. will offer a tough lesson to any driver caught paying attention to their phones instead of the road, said Lewis D. Sending or receiving a text message takes a drivers eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds -- the equivalent of a driver driving blind for the length of an entire football field at 55-mph. In a recent study, 40 percent of all American teens say they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put people in danger. These figures may seem like just statistics, but we know that even one life lost or one victim severely injured, is one too many, said Colonel Robert M. Coupe, Delaware State Police. More often than we would like, we bring the tragic news to families about the serious injury or death of a loved one that may have been prevented had someone not been driving distracted.
