Matching Directions: On the line before each definition, write the letter of the term that matches it correctly. Each term is used only once. ova - also called eggs gamete - human reproductive cell, either male or female menstrual cycle - repeats about every 28 days in females zygote - the first cell of a new human reproduction - process essential to the continuation of life on Earth sperm - male reproductive cell estrogen - female hormone terostosterone -male hormone Short Answer 1. Compare and contrast the male and female reproductive systems. One major point of comparison is that a large amount of the male reproductive system is on the outside of the body, whereas the female reproductive system is mostly on the inside. The testicles or testes produce sperm and testosterone and the ovaries produce eggs or ovum. The sperm travels through the penis out the urethra and the eggs travels through the fallopian tubes into the uterus.

Sperm Versus Eggs

The male reproductive system produces sperm, which carry DNA information to the female eggs. Sperm are produced on a constant basis within the testicles. The female reproductive system, on the other hand, has thousands of eggs, which also carry genetic information. However, these are not produced on a constant basis. Rather, a woman is born with all the eggs she will ever need, and these are released into the uterus at the rate of approximately one per month. 2. What happens to an unfertilized egg during the menstrual cycle?

The unfertilized egg and the lining of the uterus are released through the vagina as your Period (this process is also called menstruation). The cycle then starts all over again.
