Liquid Penetrant (LP) Inspection

Team utilizes LP inspection to detect defects that are open to the surface in all types of nonporous materials. In castings and forgings, these may be cracks or leaks in new products or fatigue cracks in in-service components. Testing is performed using visible red dyes under visible light conditions or fluorescent dyes under ultraviolet light. Evaluation and classification of material is based on Code or customer requirements.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Team’s MT detects surface and near-surface imperfections such as cracks, seams and laps in ferromagnetic materials, and is used to assess location, size, shape and extent of these imperfec- tions. When the test object is magnetized, flaws perpendicular to the magnetic field direction cause flux leakage. Magnetic particles applied to the surface are held at the location of the imperfection by flux leakage.

Electromagnetic Testing

Electromagnetic testing applies to a family of test methods that uses magnetism and electricity to detect or measure cracks, flaws, corrosion or heat damage in conductive materials. Magnetic properties and geometric analysis are used to determine the best technique to identify defects. Electromagnetic testing methods include:

Eddy Current Testing (ET) – Team’s standard Eddy Current testing is ideal for nonferrous materials such as heat exchanger tubes, condensers, boilers, tubing and aircraft surfaces. Team’s ET uses electromagnetic induction to detect flaws in conductive materials, displaying the presence of very small cracks, pits, dents and general thinning.

Remote Field Testing (RFT) – Team’s RFT is utilized to inspect ferromagnetic tubing. Extremely sensitive to wall thickness variation with near equal sensitivity to inside and outside surfaces, RFT does not have the “skin effect” difficulties that conventional eddy currents have when inspecting ferromagnetic materials.

3

Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) – Team’s MFL inspection is an ideal way to inspect large ferromagnetic steel surfaces such as storage tank floors. When a magnetic field is passed through the steel, flux leakage caused by pitting and corrosion on the underside of the floor is detected by MFL sensors in the scanning unit and displayed for the operator. MFL is also used on ferromagnetic heat exchanger tubing and process piping as a screening technique for wall loss.

Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM) ACFM provides depth information of cracks up to one inch deep, and may be used on coated surfaces. Team’s ACFM testing equipment establishes a locally uniform current in the test object and measures the magnetic flux density above the surface. Discontinui- ties cause changes in the current, and thus, the magnetic field.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

UT uses high frequency ultrasonic waves to detect surface breaking and internal imperfections, measure material thickness and determine acceptance or rejection of a test object based on a reference code or standard. Team’s UT techniques provide instant results, and are sensitive to both surface and subsur- face discontinuities throughout the material. UT is capable of detecting imperfections throughout the entire material thickness, and may be used with access to only one surface. Team offers the following UT techniques:

Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) – Team’s UTT measures remaining wall thickness on piping, pressure vessels, storage tanks and other materials, and can be used to scan bolts, shafts and raw materials for imperfections. A straight beam is directed at the test piece and, utilizing the round trip time for the ultra- sonic energy, the distance to the flaw is displayed in thousandths of an inch. On UT units with A-scan, the display will show multiple flaws at different depths.

Shear Wave UT (A-Scan) – Team’s shear wave UT or A-scan testing transmits an ultrasonic wave at a predetermined angle into the test material. Surfaces normal to the beam path and cornertraps reflect the wave energy back to the transducer. The display shows the distance the wave traveled to the imperfection and the relative strength of the energy.

Remotely Operated Tank Crawlers

Team’s AMAC-1000 is a rugged, versatile, magnetically attached, remotely operated crawler designed to serve as a platform for various types of probes and attachments used in the inspection of tanks, pressure vessels, spheres and piping. The AMAC-1000 combines with various inspection hardware and software for automated data collection. The unique

design of the AMAC-1000 allows it to navigate on most surface configurations without time- consuming adjustments. The suspension is fully independent, allowing it to easily traverse welds, junctions and other obstructions. The large 2.5-inch diameter wheels are stainless steel encased Neodymium magnets providing over 250 pounds of force. The wheels can be staggered to ease in crossing weld lines or they can be aligned for special applications. Scrapers are mounted over each wheel to cope with

excessive buildup.

Team’s tank crawler.

4

B-Scan – Team’s B-scan is useful for corrosion analy- sis or locating laminations and inclusions in new rolled materials. Real-time imaging displays a profile of the test material along the scan path. Images can be stored for later review.

C-Scan – Team’s C-scan can be used to determine corrosion rates and code calculations. The inspection is done in an immersion tank or with a tank crawler, and data is displayed on a plane view utilizing a color system to indicate various material thicknesses.

Internal Rotating Inspection System (IRIS) Team’s IRIS inspection detects defects and measures wall loss of both ferrous and nonferrous tubing. It provides information about the geometry of the defect while accurately measuring local defects and wall loss on both the inside and the outside of a tube. Defects under support plates are easily detected and quanti- fied as well. Computerized reporting and tube sheet mapping are available.

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) – Ideal for inspect- ing and sizing defects in welds, TOFD uses two angled probes (one on each side of the weld) to transmit sound waves into the test material at angles specific to its thickness. Discontinuities are shown as breaks in the waves or as additional waves between mode lines. TOFD is normally utilized in conjunction with Phased Array UT.

Phased Array UT (PA) – PA provides sharper detection capability for off-angle cracks, and is capable of displaying multiple presentations simultaneously. PA applies computer-controlled excitation to individual elements in a multi-element probe. By varying the timing of the excitation, the sound beam can be swept through a range of angles. The shape of the beam may also be modified to a specific focal distance or spot.

Positive Material Identification (PMI)

Team’s Positive Material Identification (PMI) quickly and accurately identifies the composition of more than 100 different engineering alloys onsite. Team can perform PMI on virtually any size or shape of pipe, plate, weld, welding materials, machined parts or castings. Team performs both x-ray f luorescence (XRF) and Spark Emission Spectrography (SES), two methods of

conducting a PMI examination. Both methods ensure compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.

Radiographic Testing (RT)

Team utilizes RT to detect discontinuities in ferrous and nonferrous castings, welds or forgings using X-ray or gamma ray radiation. RT reveals both external and internal defects, internal assembly details and changes in thickness. Team’s licensed technicians meet all state and federal radiography regulations.

Remote Viewing and Video Inspection (RVI)

Team’s highly trained inspectors employ robotics, fiber optic cameras, borescopes and other instrumen- tation and recording systems to conduct RVI on equipment such as piping systems, vessels, turbines, boilers and heat exchangers. Data can be recorded onto VHS tape, CD or DVD for viewing and storage.

Visual Inspection (VT)

Team uses the Visual Inspection process on struc- tures, mechanical and electrical components, welds, piping and other hardware. VT visually checks areas to verify that they meet the applicable code or standard. Inspection may include magnification, remote optical viewing devices and additional measurement tools.

T echnology continues to play a major role in the development of NDE/NDT and inspection services. Advancing technologies are making

inspections faster, safer and more accurate. These

technologies include:

Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM)

Originally developed for inspection of fatigue cracking, ACFM is an advanced technique for detecting surface cracks and pinpointing the location, length and depth of the defect. This rapid, one-pass ET method does not require extensive cleaning of the work piece or electrical contact. Unlike Dye Penetrant (PT) and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), ACFM works through paint and coatings and in a wide range of temperatures. Applications include painted or coated piping, process vessels, structural frameworks, bridges, cranes, axles and ship hulls. Results are automatically recorded and accepted by certification authorities.

Computed Radiography (CRT)

Nearly everything that can be done with conven- tional film-based radiography can be done better, faster and more accurately with Team’s advanced Computed Radiography system. CRT produces digital images on reusable phosphorous plates with lower exposure requirements. This process translates to smaller exclusionary zones and decreased exposure times in your facilities. The original archived image cannot be altered, thus maintaining the integrity of the raw data. Without altering the archived image, the electronic image-viewing software can be sharpened, filtered and zoomed for analysis by the technician or customer to enhance evaluation. Digital images can be e-mailed or posted on the Web, allowing others to aid in analysis or report results. Viewing software also allows for digital annotation and measurement using a mouse and/or keyboard instead of grease pencil or overlays. CRT uses the same radiation producing devices. CRT requires no film, which means there is no need to buy or dispose of chemicals.

Long-Range Guided Ultrasonics (GUL Wavemaker ® )

Team offers the latest in piping integrity testing with GUL Wavemaker ® Long-Range Guided Ultrasonics. These highly accurate systems use low frequency guided sound waves to detect corrosion and erosion in pipelines and process piping. Unlike other systems, GUL Wavemaker is ideal for difficult-to-access locations, including sleeved road crossings, wall penetrations, pipe racks and pipe under insulation. Using this advanced technology, Team can test pipe lengths up to 260 feet (in each direction) from a single point depending on pipe condition, type and configuration. Pipe from 2 to 36 inches in diameter can be tested with the same portable system. The system examines the internal and external surfaces of the full circumference of the pipe. GUL is an excellent tool to identify corrosion, erosion and other discontinuities.

Phased Array

Phased Array reduces time and costs by quickly providing the precise location and size of a weld defect. Team technicians can produce accurate, detailed cross-sectional images of welds and other internal features at fast inspection speeds with Phased Array. Flaws or defects are measured accurately and marked for repair immediately following examination.

Ultrasonic Detection of Wet Hydrogen Damage

Wet hydrogen damage leads to blistering and often causes Stress Oriented Hydrogen Induced Cracking (SOHIC). Team can test welds and base materials for this damage using an ultrasonic technique that includes both compression and shear wave ultrasonics.
