____________________________________________________________________________________ POLYMER INFORMATION Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) is polymerized by two basic methods, emulsion and solution. SBR usually contains 29% styrene randomly dispersed with butadiene in the polymer chains. The emulsion and solution grades have basically the same ratios of styrene and butadiene. The emulsion SBR polymers were first synthesized and used in tires as a substitute for natural rubber. Initially, the solution SBR was not suitable for tires, but in recent years, this has changed with new processing technology. Styrene-Butadiene emulsion elastomers can be made by both a cold and hot process. Although cold SBR is often preferable to hot for optimum physical properties, use of hot SBR types, can contribute to both processing and product improvements. The emulsion polymers are designated two ways: 1) by International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers, Inc., and 2) Producer Code numbers. The following table lists the two numbering systems: Institute Numbers 1000 1100 1500 1600 Producer Code No 0 - 49 50 - 99 100 - 149 150 - 199

Solution SBR is mainly known by block copolymers called Kraton. These polymers are more thermoplastic than the conventional emulsion SBR. SBR has a good combination of abrasion, tear and crack growth resistance. SBR is easier to process than natural rubber. SBR was designed to replace natural rubber and this is evidenced by its glass transition temperature. The Tg of SBR closely coincides with natural rubber which again makes it an excellent replacement or partial replacement of natural rubber in tires. All types of SBR use the same basic compounding ingredients as do other unsaturated hydrocarbon polymers. They need sulfur, accelerators, antioxidants, antiozonants, activators, fillers and softeners or extenders. Zinc oxide plus stearic acid is the most common activator system for SBR. There are many uses for SBR besides tires. Shoe soles, mechanical goods, sponge and foamed products and adhesives are just some of the applications that use SBR. SBR latex represents 10% of the market and is used in carpet-backing compounds and construction adhesives, caulks and sealants. ____________________________________________________________________________________ APPLICATIONS Passenger Tire Treads (75% into tires). Shoe soles and other footwear, mechanical goods, sponge and foamed products, waterproofed materials, hose, belting, adhesives and coated fabrics.

SPECIAL INFORMATION TO NOTE: Zinc oxide and Stearic acid are used in combination as a common activator Many SBR compounds contain peptizers Aromatic and napthenic oils are commonly used in SBR Ester plasticizers used in SBR are for special purposes including low temperature performance or specific fluid extraction characteristics.
