EXPERIMENT 5 CENTER OF GRAVITY AND EQUILIBRIUM Abstract In the experiment conducted, the application of Center of gravity, equilibrium and torque was put into play. Center of Gravity, also known as the Center of Mass, the point at which the entire weight of a body may be considered as concentrated so that if supported at this point the body would remain in equilibrium in any position. In the set-up A, a meter stick is put into equilibrium and then it is adjusted to another manner on which the point of support is in another place than of the place of equilibrium. Using weights, the set up was again brought into equilibrium by adjusting the weight in such a place that the meter stick would again be balanced. Then in set-up B, the initial situation where the point of support was measured that of 30cm then by placing a 200g, 100g and 20g weights at marks 10cm, 20cm and 90cm correspondingly. Lastly, by using a 50g weight and by positioning it at a certain point in the other side of the set-up, the combination of the weight and distance must bring the said set-up to rotational equilibrium.

Guide Questions: 1.Define the following : a.) The moment of force Torque, moment or moment of force, is the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis b.) The center of gravity The point in or near a body at which the gravitational potential energy of the body is equal to that of a single particle of the same mass located at that point and through which the resultant of the gravitational forces on the component particles of the body acts. 2. Differentiate translational and rotational equilibrium

Rotational equilibrium is defined as the state of a system for which the total angular acceleration is zero. Translational equilibrium is a body in equilibrium has zero resultant force acting on it and therefore has zero acceleration
Translational equilibrium is a balanced system on which it remains at rest and is not moving in any direction along a plane while rotational equilibrium is a balanced system on which it is not moving clockwise or counter clockwise

3. A uniform rod 1m long weighs 150 N and is supported in some fulcrum. Weighs of 40 N and 50 N are suspended from the two end of the rod. Find the position of the fulcrum if the system is in equilibrium

0.5 + x x

40

150

0.5-x

50

Solution:

=0
(40N)(0.5+x) + (150N)(x) = (50N)(0.5-x) 20+40x+150x = 25-50x 20+190x = 25-50x 190x+50x = 25-20

240x = 5 240 240 X=0.0208m 0.5 + 0.0208 = 0.5208m 0.5 0.0208 = 0.4792m

4. A uniform rod 10m long and weighing 150N is supported horizontally by props P and R a distance of 2m and 8m from one end. Weighs of 250N, 100N and 120N are attached 1m, 7m and 10m respectively from the same end. Find the force of each prop
250N 150N 100N 120N

1m

5m P (2m)

7m

10m R (8m)

Solution: P+R= F1l1 + F2l2 + F3l3 +F4l4 (250N)(1m) - (100N)(5m)-(120N)(8m) + (R)(6m)=0 250-500-960+R(6m)=0 R(6m)=960+500-250 FR (6m) = 1210N 6m 6m FR= 201.67 N FP=268.33N
