FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS

Force field analysis is a technique that helps you identify and visualize the relationships between the significant forces that influence a problem or goal. You can use it: Identify key factors (forces) that promote or hinder the solution of a problem or the achievement of a goal. Identify improvement opportunities.

DRIVING FORCES Driving forces compel change. These forces may be focused on the individual, the department, the company or the economy.Change can only occur when driving forces outweigh restraining forces. Examples of this include bonus incentives, new product offerings, technology advancements, budgetary constraints, sales performance and so on.

RESTRAINING FORCES Restraining forces tend to have a mitigating effect on driving forces and, like driving forces, may be seen on a variety of levels: the individual, the department, the company or the economy. Examples of restraining forces include poor efficiency, low quality, process issues, support issues, lack of clarity and conflicting goals.

BENEFITS OF FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS Force field analysis has many of the benefits of any qualitative analysis in that it is a method that can be used by anyone, no experience necessary. This enables wide group participation that, in many cases, acts as a stimulus towards creative brainstorming in and of itself. Force field analysis also has the benefit of several different types of applications.
