ES 104 Problem Set 1 1. Find the Thevenin equivalent resistance between terminals a) 1 and 2, b ) 2 and 3, c) 1 and 3. 2.

A particular signal source produces an output of 30 mV when loaded by a 100 k resistor and 10 mV when loaded by a 10 k resistor. Calculate the Thevenin voltage, Norton current and source resistance. 3. Consider an Nbit ADC whose analog input varies between 0 and V. (a) Show that the least significant bit (LSB) corresponds to a change in the analog signal of V/(2N1). This is the resolution of the ADC. (b) Convince yourself that the maximum quantization error is half the resolution, i.e. V/2(2N1). (c) If V = 10 mV, how many bits are required to obtain a resolution of 5 mV or better? What is the actual resolution obtained? What is the resulting quantization error? 4. In compactdisc (CD) audio technology, the audio signal is sample d at 44.1 kHz. Each sample is represented by 16 bits. What is the speed of the system in bits/s? 5. An amp operating from 3 V supplies outputs a 2.2 Vpeak sine wave across a 100 load when provided with a 0.2 Vpeak input from which 1 mApeak is drawn. The average current in each supply is measured to be 20 mA. Find the voltage gain, current gain, and power gain expressed as ratios and in dB. Also find the supply power, amplifier dissipation, and amplifier efficiency. 6. An amp using balanced power supplies is known to saturate for signals extending within 1.2 V of either supply. Its linear voltage gain is 500 V/V. What is the rms value of the largest undistorted sine wave output available, and input needed, with 5 V supplies? With 10 V supplies? With 15 V supplies? 7. An amp with 40 dB of open circuit voltage gain, input resistance of 1 M and output resistance of 10 , drives a load of 100 . What voltage and power gains can be expected with the load connected? If the amp has a peak current output limitation o f 100 mA, what is the rms value of the largest sine wave input for which an undistorted output is possible? What is the corresponding output power available? 8. A 10 mV signal voltage signal source having source resistance of 100 k is connected to an amp with input resistance of 10 k , open circuit voltage gain of 1000 V/V, and output resistance of 1k . The amp is connected to a 100 load. What is the overall voltage gain from source to load? What would be the gain if the source was connected directly to the load? What is the ratio of these two gains? This ratio is a useful measure of the benefit the amp brings. 9. A current amp for which Ri = 1 k , Ro = 10 k , and Ais = 100 A/A is to be connected between a 100 mV source with a resistance of 100 k and a load of 1 k . What are the values of current gain io/ii, voltage gain vo/vi and power gain, expressed directly and in dB? 10. A voltage amplifier with an input resistance of 10 k , an output resistance of 200 , and a gain of 1000 V/V is connected between a 100 k source and an open circuit voltage source of 10 mV and a 100 load. For this situation (a) What output voltage results? (b) What is the voltage gain from source to load? (c) What is the voltage gain from the amplifier input to the load?

11. In the RC circuit shown in the figure on the right, Ri and Ci represent the input resistance and capacitance of an amplifier. Derive an expression for T ( j ) = V ( j ) / V s ( j ) and show that it is of the low pass STC type. 0 Find the 3 db frequency if RS = 20 k , Ri = 80 k and Ci = 5 pF.

12. F or the circuit shown on the right, find the expression for T( j) = Vo(j)/Vi(j) and by arranging it in the standard form , infer whet her it is of the high pass or low pass type. For R1 = 10 k , R2 = 40 k , and C = 0.1 F, find the corner frequencies, 0 and f0. What is the value of | T( j0)|?
