Principals Report
Welcome back to the Year 8 students and a big welcome to our Year 7 students. Intermediate school is a very important transition in the lives of students. They are the years when many of the skills and work habits that are essential for success in secondary and tertiary education are formed and developed. We are looking forward to an excellent start to the year and we will be holding a Meet the Teacher evening on Tuesday 19th February at 7.00pm when parents / caregivers have the opportunity to meet their childs teacher and have a look around the school. This is an informal meeting and appointments aren't necessary. New Staff: I would also like to welcome our new staff to school. Aloma Williams has been appointed as Deputy Principal. Many families will already know Aloma who has many years experience in teaching and Senior Management both at our school and more recently as Year 7 & 8 Dean at Whangamata Area School. Jo Griffin has been appointed as Assistant Principal; Jo comes to us from Stanley Ave School where she was a teacher and Team Leader. Both Aloma and Jo have a great deal of expertise to share and we are delighted to have them join our Senior Management Team. I would also like to welcome Sally Oldfield and Jimmy Heta, both Sally & Jimmy are experienced teachers who come very highly recommended and we are very happy to have them join our teaching staff. Also, welcome back to Steph Clark who was on maternity leave last year from her full-time teaching position; it is great to have you back. Tracy Huigens has also joined MIS as our Librarian and Caroline Williams is our new Canteen Manager. Both Tracy and Caroline have prior experience in these areas and we welcome them both to MIS. Uniforms: All students are required to wear full correct uniform at all times; uniforms are to be kept clean and in good order. If there is ever a problem with part of the uniform, students must bring a signed note from home to receive a uniform pass. It is most important to have all uniform items named, including PE gear and shoes. Powhiri: The school will be holding a Powhiri on Thursday 7th February to welcome new students and staff at 11.00am. Teachers will explain the process and protocol of this event to students. Parents are most welcome to attend. School Fees and Donations: A formal account will be sent home with your child during the next week providing a breakdown of school fees and donations for 2013. I look forward to meeting all our school families as the year progresses and also look forward to all our students having another great year at Morrinsville Intermediate. Warm regards, Colin McDonald

MORRINSVILLE INTERMEDIATEA QUALITY LEARNING COMMUNITY

General Information
If parents have any concerns, their first point of contact is with the classroom teacher of their child. Please send a brief written note with your child, the teacher can then action the concern or phone you to discuss the issue further. Alternatively, you may phone the school office on 07 889 6629 and a message can be passed on or email the teacher direct. All students are required to bring their PE gear every day. If your child is unable to participate in PE for any reason, parents need to send a signed note of explanation to the classroom teacher. It is most important to name all clothing, shoes and belongings. If any items do go missing students are advised to let their teacher know ASAP, more often than not, misplaced items which have been named are easily found again. Clothing etc which is left at school will be placed in the lost property and students can view this any time by asking at the office. A school newsletter will be distributed every Thursday (starting next week). This will contain all matters of school news, coming events and information including BOT meeting dates. We prefer the newsletter to be emailed home (If you would like the weekly newsletters emailed please email m.cook@mi.school.nz with your childs name and the email address you would like it sent to). The school office is open each day from 8.00am to 4.00pm. Our office staff will be able to answer any day-to-day queries you may have. Please phone the office on 07 889 6629 before 9.15am if your child is going to be late or absent. All unexplained absences will be followed up by Truancy Officers. Students who are late must sign in at the school office on arrival and be issued with a Late Pass. Please send a note or phone the office if your child will be late to school. Students who need to leave school for any reason must be collected from the school office and signed out. Students are not generally permitted to use the school phone for personal calls. On the odd occasion they will be permitted to use the phone at the discretion of their teacher and/or office staff but may need to pay a small charge as we are classed as a business and are charged for all calls.

Sun-Smart

All students are encouraged to wear a sun hat during terms one and four; these can be any style of sun hat but must be either royal blue, navy blue or black. Hats must not have large designer labels or slogans printed on them. Students are also encouraged to bring sun block to school during the summer months, especially during swimming (a small named tube of sun block kept in your bag is ideal).

School Swimming
MIS students will take part in swimming starting from next week. Classes bus to the town pool at the recreation grounds. Students will be charged an $8 swimming fee which goes towards pool entry and bus costs. Each team (Tainui, Aranui and Aotea) will attend rostered lessons at the pools during the first few weeks of term leading up to our school swimming carnival. The Swimming Carnival is also held at the recreation grounds on Thursday 7th March for capable swimmers who wish to compete. Look out for further information sent home by your childs Teacher or Team Leader; students are expected to bring their togs, towel and sun block on the days they are booked to go to the pools.

Rarotonga Tour 2013

Each year Morrinsville Intermediate students get the opportunity to be involved in an overseas trip together with Cambridge Middle School and Te Awamutu Intermediate. In 2013 this will be to Rarotonga from 6th April until 13th April and our students will be accompanied by Brenda Te Wiata (our Art & Te Reo teacher). This trip is an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about another culture. This year this trip will include both Year 7 and Year 8 students. Interested students need to see Mrs Te Wiata. The cost involved will be approx $2,400.00 per person with a deposit of $700.00 due on acceptance (by 15th Feb).

BUS STUDENTS All students who travel by bus have had a Bus Meeting at school today to be allocated bus numbers and rolls for pick-ups from school in the afternoons. If you have any queries regarding pick-up or drop-off times please contact Greenline direct on 889 7758. Over the next week we ask parents to be a bit flexible with the bus timetables until all schools have started back for the year and bus times can be finalised. ROAD SAFETY The designated place for children to cross the road is the Crossing on Elizabeth Ave. Parents are also asked to drop their children off and pick them up on Elizabeth Ave as the entry on Coronation Road is the bus bay and is extremely busy before and after school.

School Canteen
The canteen is open for students but will have a limited menu for the next week or two while we get the canteen up and running.
