I Can Do - Success Criteria

I can explain the distribution of global biomes in general in reference to latitude and altitude I can describe and explain what ecosystems and biomes are. I can explain the relationship between different trophic levels I can identify the knock-on effects of changes to an ecosystem and consequences it would have for different trophic levels within the ecosystem. I can describe the characteristics of at least one small scale ecosystem (freshwater pond) I can explain (using a small scale case study of a freshwater pond) that animals and plants within an ecosystem are interdependent, I can describe the distribution of the 3 key biomes Temperate Deciduous forests, Tropical Rainforest and Tropical Deserts. I can describe the climatic characteristics of tropical deserts, rainforests and temperate forests I can describe the characteristics of the vegetation, climate and soils for each ecosystem I can explain ways in which vegetation adapts to the climate at different latitudes (or altitudes) I am able to plot global distribution of ecosystems in an ecocline and identify where the worlds TDFS, TRFS and Hot Deserts are located. I am able to interpret climate graphs and soil profiles of each ecosystem I can describe the key physical features and relationships within a Temperate Deciduous forest ecosystems I understand how Temperate Deciduous woodlands can be used using Epping Forest as a regional case study I understand how to identify a range of methods in which Temperate Deciduous woodland can be sustainably managed referring specifically to Epping Forest I can use map work skills to extract information in relation to the Epping Forest case study. I have practiced using 6 figure grid references and map symbols. I know and can describe how and why Tropical Rainforests are being exploited I can describe why Tropical Rainforests are of such importance globally I can explain why the Amazon rainforest is under pressure from urbanisation, population increase and political decisions I understand That Tropical Rainforests are exploited unsustainably in a range of ways and consequently there is a problem with deforestation I can identify the political, social, economical and environmental impacts of deforestation using Malaysia or Brazil as a case study I am able to analyse photographs to ascertain key information in relation to sustainable uses of the rainforest (in Malaysia for example) I can explain the methods used to manage TRFs sustainably. E.G selective logging, replanting, education, ecotourism, protection, reducing demand for tropical hardwoods and reducing debt. I can explain sustainable ways of exploiting the rainforest by using case studies such as selective logging in Malaysia and ecotourism in Costa Rica. I can describe and explain the location and characteristics of hot desert environments I can describe how sustainable management can be put to practise in hot deserts I can explain case study information on traditional uses of hot deserts (pastoralism and hunter gatherer )and identify issues and challenges for future use of the deserts in this way. I can explain how xerophytic plants adapt to desert environments I can explain case study information on contemporary uses (tourism, migration, mineral extraction and commercial farming) of hot deserts and identify issues and challenges for sustainable use of hot deserts in this way. I can describe the difference between how a hot desert in an MEDC shall have different land uses to a hot desert in an LEDC
