POLICY: INSET

Aims:

• Continuing professional development for Teachers and Support Staff


• Whole school training of topical issues
• Development of required skills
• Gaining experience in the performance process and in reviewing professional
development

Outcomes:

Process

In a calendar year there are 5 whole school insets. The topic(s) will be identified by the
Leadership in consultation with the staff.
The school is closed to students
For whole school insets, all staff are expected to be in school by 8.30 am.
If ill, staff should phone the usual way and before 7.45 am at the latest and ensure they follow
up inset topic

For individual external or internal inset staff should;


• Complete the inset booking form and a planned absence request form.
• A copy of the inset form together with the planned absence request form handed to the
Assistant Director in charge of cover – for arranging cover
• A copy of the inset form to the school bursar – for payment if applicable
• Send a copy to the inset form to book yourself with the inset providers

Staff are encouraged to attend training in order to increase their subject awareness and some
of the outcomes mentioned above.

Each member of staff can attend up to three courses (dependent on the funding availability).
Staff with additional responsibility can attend extra courses to train for their particular role
and/or duties in school.

POLICY: INSET

There may be ‘essential’ INSET provision in special circumstances e.g.

New GCSE and Post 16 Specifications or other initiatives


The introduction of new courses into the school’s curriculum
Obtaining of specific certificates, e.g. in first-aid

Preparation
When granted an inset, staff are expected to leave appropriate cover work with HOF or 2 i/c
and mark the work the students do. If the staff are out on a homework day, they are expected
to set homework and mark it on their return.

Threshold/CLT
Staff are expected to keep a copy of all insets attended as a contribution of evidence required
for performance management and chartered London teacher status

As a general rule,

• Following their attendance at any INSET activity, the staff are required to disseminate
any relevant information to their colleagues at a subsequent staff, faculty or year meeting
or by some other means.
• Complete an inset evaluation form to report on the objectives and acquired skills,
knowledge and understanding of the course. *

* Failure to complete an inset evaluation form would result in refusal of future applications.

Note:

1. In the case of multiple applications for a course or day a selection will be made based
on staff professional needs.
2. In the case of refusal of application staff can appeal to the Director of the Collegiate
Schools.
