The Lenape Regional High
School District board members
were honored for their service
during the Jan. 30 board of educa-
tion meeting.
Superintendent Carol Birn-
bohm presented board members
with plaques for School Board
Recognition Month, held in Janu-
ary. Gov. Christie originally desig-
nated the month.
Each member was presented
with a plaque identifying his or
her years of service on the board.
As a coach, I found it effective
when I saw something occurring
at a game or practice to name
what I saw. I would stop what I
saw and reward it, said Birn-
bohm, a former lacrosse coach.
It was my method of ensuring
the good things on the field done
by some individuals became good
things all team members strive
for.

N
ew Jersey is about one year
away from making history.
For the first time, the Super
Bowl will be played in an open air sta-
dium in a region that is, in early Feb-
ruary, cold. Really cold.
The 2014 Super Bowl is set for Feb. 2
at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
Its home to both the Jets and the Gi-
ants, so, in theory, and perhaps only in
theory, they could meet up for the big
game.
Area football fans have obvious rea-
sons to be excited. The trip up the
Turnpike, for example, is a lot easier to
make than one to Florida or New Or-
leans. Theres just something about
having the big game played in ones
back yard that also gets the blood to
pumping a little faster.
But even if you dont know Eli Man-
ning from Eli Whitney, you should care
about this game. The benefits to the
state are huge.
Most tangible will be the economic
impact. The 2014 host committee esti-
mates that about $550 million will be
pumped into the local economy from
tourism and other game-related activi-
ties. That number could fluctuate a bit
depending on which teams make it.
Local teams might not bring in as
many tourists.
Fans are going to stay at hotels, eat
at restaurants and frequent local busi-
nesses. That not only helps the local
businesses, it also generates tax rev-
enue.
Theres also something to be said for
the positive national, and even interna-
tional, attention the game brings to the
region. It can make New Jersey more
attractive, for example, to large con-
ventions and other events that can
bring thousands of people to the state
to stay and spend money.
In any event, were excited about
New Jersey making a splash on such a
prominent stage. It means many good
things for the state.
in our opinion
One year, and counting
A year from now, we will be having a Super time
Kicking off
In about a year, the NFLs biggest game
will take place in New Jersey. While
thats great news for football fans, its
also enough to get non-fans excited.
The economic benefits associated with
hosting such a big event can have a
far-reaching positive impact.
Cherokee debate team leads division
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
Students of the Cherokee High School
debate team have proven they are worthy
competitors.
The debate team has been a club since
the late 1980s, according to head coach
Dave Ellis, who has been the coach for the
past six years.
Debate teams in the area are split into
two divisions: Lincoln and Douglas.
Currently, Cherokee leads the Douglas
division with a season record of 7-1, while
Eastern High School leads the Lincoln divi-
sion 8-0.
According to Ellis, there are 25 students
on the team, with six competing at the var-
sity level.
The season begins in mid-December and
runs through the end of February.
Each team follows a national structure
encompassing how the debate is run and
the topic.
According to the South Jersey Debate
League, a debate is a contest between two
sides with opposing views. A two-person af-
firmative team presents a unique and origi-
nal plan that supports a resolution. A two-
person negative team argues the affirma-
tive plan will not work. The negative team
does not propose a counter plan.
This years topic asks if, the federal gov-
ernment should substantially increase its
transportation infrastructure in the U.S.
The team will meet twice a week in
school leading up to competition, and out-
side the confines of the school setting.
Its the kind of thing where it requires a
lot of effort outside of school and outside of
my guidance, said Ellis. A lot of research
on their own. The students bounce ideas off
one another and off of me.
After an hour of competition, judges
choose the winner.
The judges will also rate each speaker
for analysis, delivery, and decorum. Logi-
cal, emotional, trustworthy, and eloquent
speech and language are expected.
Senior and debate team captain Allison
Ebner was wary of joining the debate team
at first. After taking a debate class, she was
convinced to join the team.
My favorite is the cross examination
part of the debate, said Ebner. You basi-
cally get to drill the other debaters with
questions. I like that the best because its a
cool intellectual battle for academics.
Members of the debate team have helped
students think about a future in college
and what career path they may decide on.

Evesham Republican Club changing
meeting time, locations and format
This year is going to be an im-
portant year for state and local
politics.
It is an election year for Gov.
Christie, as well as our Eighth
Legislative District team of Sena-
tor Addiego and Assemblymen
Brown and Rudder.
Republican control of the
County Freeholder Board will be
at stake with Joe Donnellys re-
election bid.
Three seats will be contested
on the Evesham Township School
Board. All of our Republican can-
didates are going to need our sup-
port.
Not only do we need to get out
the vote, but we need to increase
and strengthen our local base.
The Evesham Republican Club
is here to help make this happen.
This year we are changing our
meeting time, locations and for-
mat.
We are planning new programs
and implementing new ideas. We
are also going to publish a quar-
terly newsletter. We just need you.
Our 2013 kick off meeting will
be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at
the Community Center at the
Legacy Oaks housing develop-
ment on Evesboro-Medford Road
near Care One and the former
Scooters Skating Rink.
When you enter the develop-
ment, the center is your first
quick right. There is ample park-
ing. Please join us starting at 7
p.m. for an informal gathering
where you can meet like-minded
neighbors and talk to some of the
movers and shakers that make
things happen in our town.
Light refreshments will be
served.
All attendees will receive a wel-
come packet outlining what the
Evesham Republican Club has
planned this year.
The business portion of our
meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.,
and you will have the opportunity
to be the first to know what is
happening in town with reports
from town council, school board,
planning board, and more.
Importantly, we are very excit-
ed to have as our featured speaker
Eveshams very own Senator
Dawn Marie Addiego.
Please consider becoming an
official member of the Evesham
Republican Club.
We are a social and educational
organization dedicated to com-
munity outreach and grassroots
involvement in our political
process.
The club is a must for anyone
interested in becoming more in-
formed about their community
and helping Republican candi-
dates at all levels.
Annual dues are only $15 per
person and $25 per couple.
You can bring checks will be
accepted on Feb. 13.
Please make the check payable
to the Evesham Republican
Club and our treasurer club Al
Lutner will collect it.

District offers tuition-based kindergarten program
The Evesham Township Public
School District will again be of-
fering a tuition-based full-day
kindergarten program for the
2013-2014 school year.
The curriculum used in this
program is aligned to what is cur-
rently being offered in the half-
day program; however, extends
early reading and math concepts,
language development, fine and
gross motor skills, related arts
and social skills.
The full-day session will be
held in five locations, DeMasi,
Jaggard, Marlton, Rice and Van
Zant Elementary Schools.
A minimum of 15 students per
classroom is required in order for
a session to be implemented.
There will also be a maximum
number of students per class-
room of 20.
The cost for the program is
$5,000 for the year, and includes
transportation for all families
living within Eveshams bus
zones.
In order to be considered for
admission into this program,
there are three requirements that
must be met:
Families must be residents of
Evesham Township
Students must be 5 years of
age on or before Sept. 30.
Students must have up-to-date
immunizations
Anyone interested in enrolling
their child in one of our classes
should complete an application,
which can be found on our dis-
trict website at
evesham.k12.nj.us, and return it
along with a non-refundable ap-
plication fee of $50 on or before
Friday, March 8, 2013 to: Evesham
Township Public Schools, Office
of Curriculum and Instruction,
25 South Maple Ave., Marlton, NJ
08053.
As applicants are received, dis-
trict personnel will assign a
tracking number to each child
who submitted an application.
If the number of applicants ex-
ceeds the number of available
slots, a lottery will be held on Fri-
day, March 15, to determine entry
into the program.
Applicant families will be noti-
fied of their application status by
mail following the lottery, no later
than Friday, March 22.
Those offered enrollment will
receive an acceptance form that
must be completed and returned
by Friday, April 5. Failure to re-
turn this form by the deadline
shall constitute a declination of
enrollment.
Applicants not initially offered
admission will receive written
notification and be assigned a
place on a waiting list, based on
the lottery drawing sequence.
Openings subsequently arising
shall be filled from the waiting
list in the order determined by
the lottery.

Debate team to take on Seneca,
Moorestown and Shawnee in
the month of February
A lot of the students are look-
ing at this as an opportunity for
school, said Ellis.
He said former debate team
members have gone on to medical
school, gone on as political sci-
ence majors and have attended a
variety of universities through-
out the country.
Its the challenge of thinking
on your feet and responding with
composure to the challenge, said
Ellis. All the students into it real-
ly enjoy the challenge.
Ebner is interested in pursuing
a career dealing with internation-
al relations.
Two years ago we dealt with
the military and moving out the
troops, she said. I think build-
ing a plan to help people around
the world is important and helped
push me toward international re-
lations.
So far, she has been accepted to
Rutgers University-New
Brunswick and Camden and the
University of Virginia. She is
waiting for replies from Ameri-
can University, Princeton Univer-
sity, McGill University in Montre-
al and the University of Pennsyl-
vania.
The debate team will take on
Seneca High School on Feb. 6,
Moorestown on Feb. 13, and
Shawnee on Feb. 20.
The championship will be held
on Feb. 27 at Lenape High School,
located at 235 Hartford Rd. in
Medford.
