The SAREX will run a fully staffed base and training will include base staff, and com as well as aircrews. Base staff training open to cadets. We will NOT be doing any SQTR Fam & Prep for aircrews, you MUST have MP/MO/MS trainee status already to participate in flight training. This will be a small scale (3 AC) 2 day SAREX and we need the full 2 days committed. In addition to aircrew training we are requesting that anyone who receives aircrew training use the second day for base staff training. Additional Aircrew Trainers needed as well. How we earned it again:
We are honored to be one of 9 Squadrons to win this Award in California Wing. To win this award two years in a row just makes this achievement that much more special to us. I believe the key to this success is to have the right staff and dedicated cadets in place to lead. SQ 47 has a fantastic Senior staff, and the Cadet program has been run by some of the finest young leaders that I have ever worked with in my 23 years in Civil Air Patrol. The criteria for earning the award states that any squadron that meets at least 5 of the 8 of the following criteria listed as of 31 December of the preceding year, qualifies:
1) Cadet Achievement: 30% of cadets on roster have attained the Wright Brothers Award. Our cadet program has been working hard to allow cadets to learn and lead. Newer cadets are encouraged to test and promote, because we want them to succeed and we do our best to provide them with the tools to be successful. This keeps the cadet interested and excited to continue. Their success is our success. 2) Orientation Flights: 60% of cadets on roster have participated in at least 1 flight. Our Senior Staff has worked hard to keep our cadets flying. Both 1Lt Jim Wilson and 2Lt Mike Hamnquist have worked to make sure our cadets take advantage of these opportunities. Fallbrook CA has an active Senior squadron that is always willing to fly cadets, and working with them is a pleasure and an honor. 3) Encampment: 50% of cadets on roster have completed encampment- We always push Encampment to our cadets. If they qualify we want them to attend. 4) Growth: Units cadet roster increased by 10%, or 10 cadets during previous year. We have tried to advertise in the local community by hosting open houses, attending Home school events, City Events and local Community gatherings. Our Color Guard has also posted in front of thousands of people at the Padres and Chargers sports events in San Diego. As well, our Color Guard was the CAP National Champions in 2011. They worked hard and we are proud of their accomplishments. 5) Retention: Unit retained 40% of first year cadets during previous year. We try to make our program exciting for cadets. Lessons learned here will carry with them for the rest of their professional lives. Our strategy is to get them on the right track early and watch them take off. We take losing a member seriously, and try to understand why the member was lost, and what we could have done to better our retention process.. Bottom line- If it looks like fun- people want to stay. 6) Enrollment: Unit has at least 35 cadets listed on its roster. We are currently at 85 members in our Squadron and our goal is to be at 100 by years end. Setting milestones help to make goals a reality. In 2011, our Public Affairs Officers Major Audrey DiGiantomasso and Captain Gillian Young have worked to communicate all we do in our squadron via newsletters and emails, making our intra-squadron communications top notch! If you cant communicate- you wont succeed. 7) Aerospace: Unit earned the Aerospace Excellence Award (AEX) during previous year. Our unit has a number of new exciting Aerospace personalities. This past year, 2Lt Jessi Jebavy introduced an exciting Robotics program, 2Lt Alan French introduced a fun AMA Remote Control Aircraft program, Major Tony Diaz worked diligently with our Cyber Patriot program members, and a number of other exciting topics were introduced to keep our AE program diverse. 8) Adult Leadership: Unit has at least 2 Training Leaders of cadets graduates on its roster- Keeping the Staff qualified has been a goal of our Personnel Officer LtC Brian Billing. His talents, dazzling personality and dedication to our program have helped to keep us all honest (and qualified)! 9) DDR excellence is now available online and will be added to the criteria next year- Looking ahead proactively, we already have a DDR Officer who is taking charge and reinforcing the theme that drugs are not the answer if success is in your future.

Helping Others
SQ 47 Members Take Citizens Communities Slogan to Heart By Maj. Audrey DiGiantomasso, CAP Serving

Cadet and senior members of Skyhawks Composite Squadron lived the CAP slogan Citizens Serving Communities as they took time out during the holidays to volunteer at Oceanside Bread of Life Mission. Making use of their Holiday break from work and school, the members came together and spent the day at the local mission packing and helping distribute 300 food boxes for working poor and homeless in North San Diego County. The leadership and teamwork that they work on at meetings came together to help make their tasks easier as they unloaded and separated pallets of potatoes and onions and filled bags with staples such as crackers, salad dressings and other types of food. As needy people lined up the cadet and senior members distributed the parcels of food, often taking time to carry out the heavier loads for those needing assistance. It was a long day of hard work but very gratifying and they all agreed it was well spent!

Attention All CAP Cadet (minimum age 13 by July 21st) and Senior Members: Have you only joined CAP in the last few months, and thought you would not be able to attend any national events this summer. Are you a long time member looking to get additional training? Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 National Emergency Services Academy (NESA) held at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Indiana, until June 3, for courses being held during our two session weeks from 21 July 4 August 2012. Courses are for all members interested in emergency services, a great opportunity for both all members to train with hundreds of other personnel from across the country. HURRY UP! Slots fill up fast! Please note that participants can register to take multiple courses back to back, but not at the same time. Apply online at: https://missions.cap.af.mil/nesa/. Slots will be filled on a first come first served basis through 12 June or until slots are filled. We encourage you to apply soon to get into the course or courses you prefer. Some courses only have a limited number of slots and some traditionally fill up fast. NOTE: Registration is hosted on the NTC secure site on the .mil; you may need to load the security certificates in order to access it if you have not done so before; certificates can be downloaded at: http://www.cap.af.mil/certificates.cfm. In addition to our normal courses for ground teams, aircrews, and the incident staff, we have added several short courses this year to allow personnel to participate if they have limited vacation time or need training in varied areas.

There are a limited number of staff positions available as well. Generally, staff members are prior NESA graduates, but some exceptions may be made by the NESA Director to ensure the best qualified personnel are used to provide this training.
Early bird registration fee to attend NESA available through the 29 January is $90 for the short courses, and $180 for a full course. In order to receive this discounted rate members must register and pay their registration fee by 1/29. The fee includes, meals, lodging on site, printed training materials, aircraft & ground vehicle sortie costs for training on site. Participants should have their own transportation to & from NESA, though many personnel are able to travel in corporate vehicles and aircraft as they are needed on site for training. Squadron Leadership School (SLS) & Corporate Learning Course (CLC) 9-11 March 2012 Vandenberg AFB, CA

SLS and CLC courses are required to advance to Captain and Major. These are interesting courses explain in detail the Squadron and CAP corporate duties to enable interested CAP members to advance to where you can make a difference to the Civil Air Patrol, California Wing, and to your CAP career. The cost for each course is $35.00 to cover expenses. The billeting is available for Friday and Saturday nights. You will need to make your own reservations for Vandenberg Lodging under Civil Air Patrol. Call reservations at (805) 606-1844, rooms are $34.75 per night. Students will go to lodging for keys upon arrival and check in after 1400 hours (Bldg 13005, Oregon Ave). CAP ID is required for the event and will be checked at CHECK IN. Transportation is for aircraft landing at Lompoc or Santa Maria Airport only with advance notice, for all other airports you must provide your own transportation. Local unit vans are needed to help transport personnel to and from the flight line and Lodging. Saturday evening a BBQ will be provided for $10, separate check. May 11th & 12th We will have a recruiting booth and will run an Aerospace Education Workshop where we have the brush bots and foam rockets. Were open to suggestions if anyone thinks of something else that would be good here. Color Guard to open the Expo? Will need people to man our recruiting booth for Friday Night or Saturday during the day. Friday night would be one shift, but Saturday can be broken down into morning and afternoon shifts. It ends at 6 pm. Will need someone to set the recruiting booth up on Friday. Set up starts at 1 pm.

Highland Games - June

We will have a recruiting booth and activity area. A great place to do the foam rockets. Need some senior members to man recruiting booth and help build the rockets. We will also need pop up shade and lots of cadets to help.

Also, if any of you can get the materials we need for the brush bots and foam rockets donated that would be very helpful. Please let me know if you have any connections for these supplies. `

A Memory Never Forgotten

What would life be like if we could not recall experiences that profoundly impacted our lives? We would be unable to reach back into the recesses of time and cherish the things that have shaped both our hearts and minds. Although the human mind possesses limited memory capacity, there are memories that should resurface from our conscience. Civil Air Patrol has occupied only a small portion of my lifetime, but many memories have been made in the past three years. One of the most remarkable experiences to date, was the 2011 California Wing Encampment. It was a time in which I was challenged far beyond my mental and physical limits. A time in which my strengths and weaknesses competed furiously against each other. It was a time of tears, trial, and triumph. Most importantly, it was a time I was given the opportunity to influence the lives of 23 cadets while serving as the Alpha Flight Commander. I foolishly assumed this job would be easy, since I had been on staff before at an encampment. But, I learned the role and responsibility of a flight commander must never be taken lightly. The main responsibility of the flight commander is to oversee the flights progress in completing the encampment objectives; which include extensive memorization, proper wear of the uniform, knowledge of drill movements, and satisfactory maintenance of barracks. At encampment, time is precious. Every moment, every second, provides an opportunity for training to take place. However, there never seemed to be enough time to get everything done. Because I was accountable for my flights performance, my mind was constantly strategizing how to get everything done while providing my cadets with quality training. In addition, a flight commander must continuously set an example for his/her cadets in all areas of discipline and professionalism. As a flight commander, I did not simply want to command the involuntary respect and obedience of my cadets. My desire was for them to see the evidence of strong leadership lived out through my actions, to set the best possible example for them. This commitment required much self sacrifice. I stayed up late and woke up early to ensure that my uniform was properly ironed and my boots shined to a gloss (I got about five hours of sleep each night). Another important responsibility of a flight commander is to ensure the physical well being of his/her cadets, to keep them alive and focused throughout encampment. If a cadet got dehydrated, my fault. If a cadet gets a painful sunburn, my error. If a cadet is left behind at the mess hall, my gross oversight. Being a flight commander was the farthest thing from easy. The challenges I faced at encampment were extremely humbling. I recognized that as a leader, I still had much to learn. Yet, the difficulties served to make the taste of success sweeter. As each day passed by, I saw my cadets rapidly progress and develop. I watched as the flight dynamic shifted from individuals into a confident, motivated team. I will always remember when Alpha flight scored the winning point in the squadron volleyball competition. All of my cadets ran from their positions and surrounded the one cadet whose one serve granted us our victory. I ran to grab the guidon flag and brought it to the center of the circle. Everyone took hold of our flights revered symbol and began chanting Alpha, Alpha, Alpha! This group of breathless, sweaty cadets, who just days before were strangers to one another, came together as one flight, one voice, and one team. They were the Alpha Athenians. Looking back, I wonder if I really did do my job. At a glance, you could say that I did. All of my cadets made it through encampment to graduation. I taught them everything I needed to teach them. We represented the 118th Cadet Training Squadron at both the drill and volleyball competitions. My cadets came together to form a solid team. But, none of this matters unless my cadets LEARNED something VALUABLE that they could take away, after they walked off the graduation field. I can only hope that I made a difference in their lives. I know that they made a difference in mine.
If you havent been to a summer encampment before, or are considering attending in a staff position, do it, without hesitation and without reservation. It will be one of the most exciting and challenging experiences of your life.
