Fire pump installations are governed by the NYC Building Code Chapters 9 and 33 and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 20. Standpipes are regulated by NYC Building Code Chapters 9 and 33 and NFPA 14, as modified by Appendix Q. Sprinklers are regulated by NYC Building Code Chapter 9 and NFPA 13, as modified by Appendix Q.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Power Supply. The power supply for a fire pump motor must be taken from the street side of the house service switch. It must have a disconnect switch clearly marked Fire Pump Power Supply. (See NFPA 149.1.4 (d) and NFPA 20). Pump Rooms 1. Location: The fire pump room must be located at the entrance floor or below. There must be direct access to the street level or access by a two-hour fire rated passageway or stairway (NFPA 20). 2. Design: Fire pump rooms must be constructed with non-combustible materials with a two-hour fire rating. They must be properly heated, lighted, ventilated and drained. Horizontal fire pumps must be on a concrete foundation at least 12 inches above the floor and have a three-foot clearance on all sides. Standpipe and Sprinkler Designs: Where the Siamese connections serve other than the entire building, the connections must be marked according to the specifications of the section Low Zone and High Zone and indicate the floors served. (See NFPA 14 6.3.5.2, as modified by Appendix Q). 3. Prohibitions: Do not place or store hazardous refrigerants, gas pipes, gas meters or gas-consuming devices in a fire pump room (NFPA 20). Equipment. Under NYC Building Code 905.3.1 and NFPA 14 as modified by Appendix Q, every pump installation requires the following: 1. Three nozzles, 2 inch x 1 1/8 inch 2. Three spanner wrenches stored in the pump room (or other convenient location) 3. Twelve washers Signaling System. All buildings higher than 300 feet must have a phone system for the Fire Department to use when operating the standpipe systems (NYC Building Code 903.4.1). Each fire pump must have its own dedicated transfer switch (or switches) where a transfer switch (or switches) is required (NFPA 14 7.8.2.3).

Domestic Service & Fire Pump: When a water service supplies the domestic service and the fire pump, a remote control valve must be placed on the domestic service connection at the point where the connection is taken from the City supply or service main. This remote control valve must be controlled from a point near the pump control panel. Instead of a remote control valve, a manually operated valve may be installed to shut off the entire domestic water supply to the building, provided such valve is located in the fire pump room and is properly tagged for identification (NFPA 14 9.1.4 (2)(c), as modified by Appendix Q).
3-way Manifold: Provide a three-way manifold equipped with three 2 -inch valves with hose valve caps at the top of the highest riser above the main roof level. Discharge: Hose nozzles must discharge at or above the highest hose outlet or through a manifold. Readings: Pitot tube gauge readings must be taken at each nozzle to determine the required pump capacity. Remember that a 46 pitot gauge reading one nozzle is equal to 254 GPM for a 1/8-inch nozzle. Check that all controls are in good working order. There should be no valves in the line leading to the controls. Separate Services: When pumps are supplied by two services, conduct the test from each service independent of each other. Then conduct an additional test with both services supplying the pump.
