Floralife Product Information Webinar, January 30, 2013

Stage 1
treatment and hydration 100 Blue
Immediately after harvest- flowers have been cut from their natural source of nutrients and hydration. The goal is to treat the cut flower in order to: inhibit potential attacks on the flower from external forces prevent the stems from drying up Keep the stems unclogged so they can soak up nutrients, treatments and water to keep hydrated and healthy

1/31/2013

Floralife Product Information Webinar, January 30, 2013

Stage 2
storage and transport 200 Gold
The journey flowers will start to take the stressful journey to their next destination by truck, sea, air. The goal at this point is to: Protect the cut flowers as much as you can from temperature change, environmental forces that could attack the flower like ethylene and fungus. Keep the flower fed and hydrated, but not enough to encourage early bud opening

1/31/2013

Floralife Product Information Webinar, January 30, 2013

Stage 3
nutrition 300 Red
Feed the flower the flower is close to or at its destination and because it has been carefully handled along the flower chain, it is a healthy vibrant flower. Now you must keep it fed to maintain color, strength and vibrancy for as long as possible The goal at this point is to: Keep the flower fed so that it keeps its vibrant colors both in the bud and greenery Promote full bud opening Keep vascular system of the flower free flowing so that the flower is gets is full nutrition.

Floralife Product Information Webinar, January 30, 2013

Sanitation
all along the flower chain
The flower chain can be a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus that can harm your cut flowers. Changing temperatures, handling, multiple venues, decaying organic materials, cut stems all contribute to bacteria and fugus growth the can harm the cut flowers. Minimizing bacteria growth is essential to healthy flowers Sanitation is a key requirement in all operations along the entire flower chain

1/31/2013

Floralife Product Information Webinar, January 30, 2013

Finishing sprays

1/31/2013 Floralife Product Information Webinar, January 30, 2013 12

Components in Flower Food

Component
Sugar

Function
Provides carbohydrate (food) for the flowers

Acidifying agent Flower stems take up water better at low pH (3.0-5.0). Acidifying agent lower the pH of solution
Stem unpluggers Microbes (bacteria and fungi) grow rapidly in vase water. These microbes clog the plumbing of the flower stems and impede the water uptake Stem unpluggers help keep the vase water clean and stems free flowing
Floralife Product Information Webinar, January 30, 2013 13

1/31/2013

Attached Flower vs. Cut Flower

Flowers Attached to a Plant

Cut Flower

Take up water and minerals through roots Grown in high light conditions, so leaves produce enough food by photosynthesis which is then taken up by flowers

Take up water from cut end of the stem Kept under low light conditions (interior) and not enough leaves, therefore food produced in the leaves is not enough

1/31/2013

Floralife Product Information Webinar, January 30, 2013

14

Why do flowers need flower food?

When a flower is cut from the plant, necessary resources become limited Flowers are actively growing even after cut from the plant Flowers need water, minerals and food (in a form of carbohydrate) for optimum function
Water To maintain the turgidity of cells (lack of water causes wilting) Needed for all reactions within the plant Carbohydrates This is the food, the building blocks for growth Energy source for reactions Minerals Needed for proper functions in cells
