Company Profile
General Fan Company (Pvt.) Ltd. was formed in 1954 as a small manufacturing unit for electric fans. The company grew rapidly from its modest start because of the quality of its products. The company was one of the major exporters of fans in 1960's to Iraq. However, the company was in trouble in late 1970's due to differences in its partners. The present management took over the company in 1978 and Engineer Muhammad Ilyas took over as Chief Executive of the company. Under his dynamic leadership the company grew rapidly and G.F.C. became major recognized brand for fans in the Pakistani market. Mr. Muhammad Ilyas, the Chief Executive who is a foreign trained Electrical Engineer, brought in new technologies for fan manufacturing from developed countries and improved G.F.C. products in a continuous process. Automatic Cap stain Lathe Machines and Die Casting Machines were introduced in 1982. Automatic Winding Machines were brought from Taiwan in 1985. A Japanese made modern Enameled Wire Manufacturing Plant was installed in 1987 for the manufacturing of quality enameled copper wire for own consumption as well as for the sale in the local market. Plastic Injection Molding Machines were installed in 1993 to manufacture own plastic parts for plastic fans like Exhaust Fans, Bracket Fans, Circumatic Fans and Table Fans. GFC Fans is one of the largest manufacturers of quality electric fans in Pakistan. GFC, under the leadership of Mr. Mohammad Ilyas, its CEO, has also been the pioneer in the expert of electric fans from Pakistan. Starting with its first commercial export in 1993, with a modest quantity & value, GFC is now exporting its products to the tune of US$ 12 million annually to more than 30 countries in the World. GFC fans became an instant

success due to their quality and durability in all the markets share these were introduced including countries in Asia, Middle East, Africa & Europe. GFC became the first electric fan manufacturing company to win Export Trophy Award in Pakistan. Now, GFC has won its 12th Export Trophy Award. GFC also became the first ever company in Pakistan that is certified by UL (Underwriter Laboratories, USA) to export fans in USA and Canada. It is also the first fan manufacturing company to be awarded BRAND OF YEAR AWARD in 2007. Keeping in mind the acute power shortage in Pakistan and other developing countries where GFC Fans are sold, GFC has been concentrating on the production of energy saving fans for the last twenty years. Special raw material for energy saving fans being used include electrical copper wire (produced at GFCs own Wire Drawing Plant since 1987), high quality ball bearings fan blades made on most modern plants/machinery with highly qualified labour force. The un-precedent success GFC have achieved during the last 30 years is being recognized as best quality fan manufacturer not only in Pakistan but also in Kingdome of Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Yemen, Senegal, Djibouti, Bangladesh, Iraq, UAE, Cameroon and many other countries. The GFC brand is also registered in many countries. GFC can take pride by the fact that many Chines Manufacturers are now copying these models originally introduced by us like Nabeel Model. Models like the Nabeel Model have received such international recognition, that now other companies use the model name to market their copies. Due to their service, high quality long life in difficult environments, GFC have become Popular in a very short time. In spite of achieving such phenomenal success, GFCs organization culture led by its directors, stresses on meeting new challenges and reaching new heights. The Directors of GFC Fans are highly qualified and motivated to lead the company. Mr. Mohammad Ilyas, the CEO, in an electrical engineer who graduated in 1968, having 43 years of work experience of not only working in the Pakistani manufacturing sector but also periodically getting trained and educated in Germany and USA.

Inventory Storage Process 1. Purchasing Process


The purchase process of inventory system is very simple and according to the assistant manager of purchase of the GFC firm Mr. Mansoor Shah is a structured process. There are mainly five (5) store rooms of the GFC. Which are named as Main Store Room Pedestal Store Room Ceiling Store Room Bracket Store Room Washing Machine Store Room

There are some steps which are followed by the working line staff and management to make any purchase process. First the production staff checks how much material is required for the completion of required production. Then he sends his requirement to the store room which is assigned to the production departments according to the nature of their working like is a washing machine production department is required material then he sends the requirement note (material demand form) to the washing machine store room. Secondary the store room checks the required material in their stock if they have the required material then they issued that material to the production department. If they are lack in material or totally dont have the required material then they send requisition note to the purchase department. Thirdly they purchase department checks the latest material purchase date of that required material and approved the purchases from the director of purchase Mr. Nazim Ijaz, if he approved and signed the purchase order. Then fourthly calls to all the shops or suppliers of the goods according to the required goods which are selected for as the entire material supplier, and settle the terms and conditions according to the delivery and sending of the material. If the supplier settles the term as he will send all the goods to the GFC then the main store room received the goods and checked the store room which send the requisition for the purchase of the goods also check the goods and ask the main department to issue these products to their store room. If the good are not according to the demand so those are send back to the supplier. If the term settled that the company picks the goods by his own, so for that purpose the company has their own Vander named as Mr. Azhar. He picks the goods from the supplier on behalf of the GFC and takes the goods in GFC and take over these to the main store room for checking and issuance purpose. If there is any defect in those goods which

are taken by the Mr. Azhar, so he is responsible for the changing and correction of those goods. This whole process occurs if the goods are in emergency level. Otherwise the level of all inventory are maintained for quantitative records which will be defined at his heading. The other process is which the normal level is contained is called normal purchases his carries the same process but on that stage the purchase process starts with the inventory are demanded by the store room and finish at the inventory received at the goods at store room.

2. Inventory Storage
The inventory storage is also an important process in a firm to hold and maintain his production process. Like a firm does not hold or store his inventory/goods so he may face many difficulties in containing his production. GFC have not a good system of storage of the products they just try to save the goods in numbers like is they have any good in their records so they just save the goods up to the goods are just issued in production process, the goods are stored in the required store room of the goods like Pedestal Store Room, Ceiling Store Room, Bracket Store Room, Washing Machine Store Room. The main store room is just for the collection and checking, issuing and returning purposes. According to the assistant manager of the purchase department of the GFC Mr. Mansoor shah every goods have different way to store like a rod and a sticker cannot store using the same techniques of storing, and GFC is using standard ways to store the goods, like they have set the standard that the inventory cannot stay more than 10 day in store room if the production is continuous at a standard rate.

3. Quantitative Records
The quantitative records of the inventories are different of all products like stackers, rod, nipples, nok plate and other things etc have different quantitative records according to the demand of the production. Every inventory has different so it is difficult to describe all inventory quantitative records here.

4. Method of Inventory Issuance


According to the assistant manager of the purchase department of the GFC Mr. Mansoor shah the method which is used for issuing of the inventory for production in GFC is FIFO method. This means in every product the stock which is in the store room comes first must be issued first. The material which comes later must be issued at the proper time and the material comes first issued first then the material comes later.

5. Coding System
According to the assistant manager of the purchase department of the GFC Mr. Mansoor shah the GFC firm is a large firm and it produces larger number of items, so for producing large number of items they must required large number of items. For the easiness of holding large number of products the firm must required a good system to manage and take record of all the good, for that purpose the GFC has purchased his own software which is very costly. But for the purpose of control and maintaining records the firm is bearing these expenses. The company has his own software which is named as Accounting software 6. This software helps to control and maintaining records of the inventory. For this purpose all the inventory is attached with a code. Like stickers used in bracket fans is code as 021354. It is easy for the firm to control the inventory and hide his secrets for the outsiders if they have any visitor or any internee. According to the assistant manager of the purchase department of the GFC Mr. Mansoor shah the firm performance and efficiency is improved by the coding system and it also helps the workers to check the stock by just the use of the article number of the inventory.
