(HR609) Course Instructors: Prof. M K Moyal and Prof J P Upadhyay No. of Credits: 03 Total Number of Sessions: 24 _____________________________________________________________________________ _ The introduction of the new economic policy in 1991 had a significant bearing on industrial relations. Coupled with liberalization, these policies changed the way industries functioned in India. It forced the government, employers and trade unions to align themselves to new realities. There is an ongoing transition in industrial relations on the global scale as well. The focus is gradually shifting from traditional industrial relations, characterized by conflict resolution, to employee relations management, characterized by collaborative partnerships between the employers and the employees. Employee Relations management focuses on this ongoing transition from industrial relations to employee relations. It introduces students to the fundamental concepts and relevant pieces of legislation against the backdrop of globalization and the new economic policy. The area of management-employee relations is broad but is meant to generally cover how managers and subordinates interact and relate with each other to more effectively meet organisational goals. This course does cover management-employee relations from an industrial relations perspective, however, it does focus on how to manage conflict and negotiation in the workplace effectively. This course mainly draws on the following topics: Employee relations theory India and the global economy The labour market and flexible organization of work Human Resource Management and employee relations Employees and unions The management of workplace conflict and bargaining The legal regulation of employment Equity: the possibilities of diversity management The future of work and employee relations Learning Outcomes The course focuses on the ongoing paradigm shift from traditional industrial relations, characterized by conflict resolution, to employee relations

management, defined by a collaborative partnership between employers and employees. It highlights the shift from industrial relations to employee relations, the implementation of employee relations management, negotiation skills and soft skills relevant for a fruitful outcome. The course also aims to enhance the awareness about the legal system prevalent in India and the world, especially in the business context. It also purports to generate topics for debate and questions for critical thinking. After undergoing this course, the student will be able to: 1. Understand different partners of Employee Relations 2. Analyse the methods of resolution of Industrial conflicts. 3. Evaluate intricacies of Labour Laws across different sectors of business 4. Analyse the models of employee relations theory 5. Describe bargaining in an employment relations context 6. Indicate actions involved in applying equity at work 7. Identify and explain the role of management, unions and the state in employment relations

Pedagogy Apart from discussions in the class, the pedagogy will involve discussions, assignments, presentations, experiential techniques like; exercises, and case studies. Students will be required to attend classes with advanced readings of the topic(s) with pre-reads given by the course instructor, besides reading materials available in text/reference books and library resource centre as per the instruction. Description of Assessment Components

Class Participation & Assignments: Performance in class will be assessed through class participation and involvement in the discussions and exercises. Furthermore, students will be required to submit assignments from time to time as and when given by the instructor while complying with deadlines without fail. Quizes: There will at least be two announced quizzes. Mid-Term and End-Term Examination: These will consist of cognition and application based questions, coupled with situations and case analysis.
