Developed for Heavy Oil Production

First tested in the Jobo Field, near Morichal, Venezuela, La Vlvula Orinoco was developed for the huff and puff cyclic steam stimulation common to the region. Field personnel spend a lot of time removing downhole equipment and the application of diluents for viscosity reduction needs improvement. Working with the engineers and field personnel of PDVSA and Logoven, a tool was designed to address these problems. La Vlvula Orinoco has Xaloy X-800 bimetallic barrels and X-8000 bi-metallic pistons for extreme corrosion and abrasion resistance and has been certified by the metallurgical specialists at Universidad Simn Bolvar

E-3: A Commercialization Cooperative

Entrepreneurs for Energy Efficiency, Inc. (E-3) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation organized by former grantees of the U.S. Department of Energys Inventions & Innovation (I&I), formerly the Energy-Related Inventions Program. E-3 promotes the commercialization of new, energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies developed by individuals and small businesses that receive grants through the I&I and other programs in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. The founders of E-3 saw their successes were due in large part by receiving the right kind of help, at the right time. Developing a commercialization strategy is not just about finding the money; its finding a solution a customer will pay for. E-3 members span the commercialization spectrum, from recent grantees to the individuals and small businesses that received grants ten or fifteen years ago that are now operating mature businesses, to serial entrepreneurs. Our members are also trusted and knowledgeable service providers and individuals in the corporate, financial, and legal communities who have an interest in the entrepreneur and their contribution to the economy and productivity. All E-3 activities are designed to increase the number of successful, entrepreneurial ventures that receive I&I or SBIR grants. We undertake this mission in multiple ways: (1) use our successes to promote the I&I and increase the number of grants funded by the program; (2) provide education and training to first-time entrepreneurs to shorten the time and reduce the cost to commercialization; (3) use the experience, contacts, and capabilities of this community to find solutions, big and small; (4) offer recent grantees specialized mentoring services by the experienced entrepreneurs who have been been through the process; (5) development relationships in the financial community to expand access to capital.

Modeled in CFD
At the heart of the pump, Computational Fluid Dynamic modeling optimized the design of the inlet chamber. In the CFD solution shown here, velocity vectors are colored by concentration of crude oil in the diluent to illustrate the mixing enhanced by the helical spring.

La Vlvula Orinoco is a new approach to heavy crude

production; a return to simplicity to re-establish the positive displacement pump as the alternative to progressive cavity or electrical submersible pumps. The unique features of the pump allow field personnel to change the configuration of the pump from the surface by rotating the sucker rod. Alternating steam applications and production can be completed without removing the pump. In the valve locked open position, the traveling ball and the standing ball are open to allow injection of steam or other production chemicals. In the valve locked closed position, the pump behaves as a standard reciprocating pump. In this mode, the application of diluents or surfactants is possible through coiled tubing and an injection system at the base of the pump. Production benefits: Applicable to steam soak & diluentassisted production with more options for varying thermal & chemical treatment, without the need to remove the pump. Financial Benefits: More barrels, reduce workover costs. Dramatically increase the service life of the pump. Environmental benefits: Eliminate pulling wet strings; Low shear pump increases droplet size, requiring less surface treatment

a new approach to mechanical lift
