Hi guys! My name is Yi Zhang and Im one of the TAs in this class. Today Im going to talk about 2 articles.

The first one is called Collective Intelligence Ratio Measurement of Real-Time Multi-model Interactions in Team Projects. The authors are Kim, Lee & Lee, Huang, and Makany. Before we start, lets first talk about Intelligence Ratio. We all know what intelligence means. Intelligence has been defined in so many different ways including understanding, self-awareness, reasoning, problem solving and all sorts of things. For example, IQ stands for Intelligence Quotient to test how smart a person is, while Intelligence Ratio is a numeric indicator representing the degree of intelligence of a person when working towards a goal, such as choosing a communicative method in order to finish a given task. When a company hires someone who is really intelligent, the chance is the person is still going to work within a team. As the old saying goes, two heads are better than one. The Collective Intelligence Ratio article is very similar to the saying. However, the authors of the article conducted research studies and applied scientific methods to verify this. They observed a group of students in an online class, and quantified their communication methods. Ant then, the study found that individual Intelligence Ratio in selecting a communication method leads to the teams Collective Intelligence Ratio. In other words, teamwork can be optimized by incorporating the 2 types of identified ratios. There are 2 things that surprised me most in the article. First, I didnt really the expect the communication methods were all quantified. I have participated in semester-long group projects. The meetings could be very time-consuming, but in this article, in order to draw conclusions from qualitative data, the authors spent a huge amount of time to testify their hypothesis. The other one is how the mathematic techniques to make the findings more accurate, such as analyzing count data, removing insignificant random effects, and showing the correlations between the goals and communication methods. The findings of the article is very important to the design of online learning environment. Im sure most of us here have experienced boring online learning in which there is barely any interactivity and the students read all the materials on their own. I believe all of us, in the online learning environment, would love the courses where we can choose the communication methods that work well for us, then communicate with our classmates, video- or voice- chat, schedule weekly meetings, and complete group projects that allow us to identify, comprehend, apply and evaluate our newly acquired knowledge. So thats just my 2 cents. I hope you guys enjoyed the article. Ill see you in the next video.
