WHY Endurance?
This is the story about the men that inspired this guide. Their lives will serve as a testament that limits exists only in our mind. These men will show you that the human spirit is more powerful than any other force on earth. My intention by telling you their story is to impress upon you the reality that the unbreakable drive that lived in them lives in you. The strength of their soul is the strength of yours. Let me tell you about the Endurance: "MEN WANTED: FOR HAZARDOUS JOURNEY. SMALL WAGES, BITTER COLD, LONG MONTHS OF COMPLETE DARKNESS, CONSTANT DANGER, SAFE RETURN DOUBTFUL. HONOR AND RECOGNITION IN CASE OF SUCCESS. - SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON This was the advertisement Sir Ernest Shackleton used to build his crew for his vessel, our guiding ship, the Endurance. In 1914, Shackleton and 27 men under his command launched what was to be the last major expedition of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His goal was to make the rst land crossing of Antarctica. An audacious and near impossible goal, even by todays standards. Shackleton called it the last great Polar journey that can be made. They did not complete their mission. They barely even started it. Before even setting foot on the Antarctic continent, their mission was over. They failed miserably. But as it always happens, from failure, they found incredible success. This story is often considered the greatest adventure story ever told. Following is a brief outline of their magnicent failure, but nothing will compare to reading the entire story in Alfred Lansings Endurance: Shackletons Incredible Voyage. This is one of my all time favorite books and I could

not recommend it enough. I assure you, it will change your life. Six weeks after departing from South Georgia Island toward Antarctica, the Endurance became trapped in the sea ice and started drifting North. For the next 10 months, Shackleton and his men used the ship as a winter station as they struggled through the unimaginable conditions of an Antarctic winter. On 21 November, 1915, despite the crews attempts to free the ship, the crushed wreck sank beneath the ice. For the next four and a half months, the crew drifted north with the ice living in camps and feeding on seals, penguins and even their dogs in order to survive. They hoped the ice would lead them directly to land on Paulet Island, 250 miles away from where the Endurance sank. They drifted as far North as they could, but eventually the ice conditions became impassable and Shackleton ordered his men into the lifeboats. A long and miserable seven days later, the crew arrived on the uninhabited Elephant Island. After 497 days on the ice, Shackleton and his men nally set foot on land. But it wasnt over. The hardship continued. Far from any shipping routes, there was no hope for rescue on Elephant Island. Shackleton then did what any great warrior would do. With ve members of his crew, he embarked upon an 800-mile voyage

across the most dangerous ocean on the planet to the whaling stations of South Georgia Island. After 16 days of battling towering waves and raging storms in a tiny boat, the six-man crew arrived on South Georgia Island only to discover that they came ashore on the uninhabited side of the Island. They still fought on. With barely any protective gear, Shackleton and two other men made the
