The Presidents Report . . . Again!

by Ron Woltman SO MUCH NEWS AND SO LITTLE TIME . . . more to come elsewhere in The Link. It is comforting, at least for me (and I hope for you, too), to have the inkstained Link back in our greasy palms! For those of you who subscribe through the Internet, you dont know what youre missing. One of the reasons for the drought from the Link pages has been unavoidable . . . we have been short on Link articles; thus NO Link. Another more tangible reason is, we had lost our Editor! Not literally, mind, but Editor Mark Atos decided to relinquish the quill, and devote time to home and hearth. Uhhh! Oh well, THANK YOU, MARK, FOR A JOB WELL DONE. Then suddenly, from barren ground and no editor, we find ourselves in a verdant field of plenty! Not one, not two, but three Editors. Gadzooks! Welcome to Steven Fong (Editor), Alan Ritchie (Co-editor), and Jean MacGillivray (Editor LEminence). Ill let them explain as time goes by. The Executive has been also juggling the more serious case of the missing Membership Chair! Now mercifully resolved, we can again get on with the task of membership- building. Dave Butler has assumed the post, and is grappling with the backlog --not the least of which, honestly, was the muck-up left by previous incumbents. And the richness overflows, as Albert Cohoe is also assisting in the role. So, those of you who have given a cheque for membership and it was never cashed: see Dave. Those of you whose cheques were cashed, and did not receive a membership card: see Dave. Those of you . . . well, you get the picture. Lots of news emanating from GTA (thats the centre of the universe) to us up here concerning CASC-OR membership changes, and ALL OF THEM ARE BRIGHT. Its exciting, and Dave and I will explain as we move forward. I want to note quickly, however, that MCO and all CASC-OR clubs will now pay a single affiliation fee of $300.00, and all MCO members will be fully sanctioned CASC-OR members. Ditto another $300.00 to RSO, and we will all be fully sanctioned RSO members; ditto OKRA . . . well, you get it. Obviously, this shall (in keeping with the biblical tone) result in a net savings for the Club. The Executive has put in place a committee to review same and come forward with some recommendations. Your viewpoint is welcome; direct it to Dave Butler, or anyone on the Executive. Moreover, you can now join online, on the highly acclaimed MCO web site [www.mco.org]!! And, while we dont have provision yet for on-line payment (which will come), we can at least expedite the membership process. The actual requisite follow-up between the Membership Chair and in-coming member can be remedied later. In 2004, we will be able to register your membership to CASCOR on-line immediately, so that clubs will enjoy accurate and up-todate membership counts! Yikes! Next years Ted Powell Summer Trophy Races are set for July 2, 3 and 4 at Shannonville Motorsport Park (SMP). Our annual Racing CASC-OR-sanctioned school is April 24 and 25 at SMP. Speaking of riches, our cup runneth over for exciting new events (Solo I), new venues and more. Read on, McDuff! Which leads me to Calabogie Motorsports Park (CMP)! I had the pleasure of an invitation to the grand opening last Oct. 25 and, believe you me, this is going to be one grand facility. Ultimately, MCO will be hosting its annual Ted Powell weekend --- and race schools, lapping days, etc. --- at this facility. The plan is to pave the more than 5km track this spring, let the polymer asphalt cure for eight weeks, and open the doors. Visit their web site to keep up to the latest news: www.calabogiemotorsports.com. And, well, we are even thinking about something for 04 at CMP.

KDM Racings Accomplishments in the 2003 Karting Season

by Debbie Michaud The KDM Racing Team and its MCO karting drivers have finished another great season. They are Alois Burkart, Chris Swinwood, Jeffrey Renaud, Derek Michaud and KellyMark Michaud. The oldest member of our team, Alois Burkart, was kart #35 in the Rotax Masters class in the Coupe de Montreal Series. He finished 17th out of 39 karts, missing three out of eight races in that series. Alois had a great first-place win at the finish, he managed to stay up there. With better luck on a couple of races, Chris would have easily finished in the top three. At a Mosport Kart Club race, he finished in second place. He got a third-place win at the Chicoutimi Street Race and a second-place win, in the cold and rain, at the SRA, Quebec, Enduro race in the Shifter 125cc class with partner Kelly-Mark Michaud. Chris has become a strong driver this year, experience now, so watch out for Jeffrey in that series in Rotax next year! His ups and downs this summer, and even being in his first year in Rotax, didnt stop Jeffrey at the Grand Nationals held at Shannonville Motorsport Park in Ontario. His determination to do well there paid off. He finished first overall in Rotax Junior, bringing home a big Bear Trophy. Winning a Bear trophy at Shannonville is a big honour.

Chicoutimi, Quebec, Street Race and a third-place win at the St. Jean-surRichelieu, Quebec, Street Race. Alois loves the challenge of street races. Good job, Alois! Chris Swinwood has also done very well. Chris, kart #56 in the Honda Senior class in the Coupe de Montreal Series, finished seventh out of 27 karts. He missed one race out of eight, with two really bad weekends; but with a great firstplace finish and a second-place

with a lot of determination to be up there. Watch out for Chris next year! Jeffrey Renaud, a Junior member of our KDM Team, was in his first year this year in Rotax Junior and did pretty well. He was kart #22 in the Coupe de Montreal Series. Jeffrey finished ninth out of 19 karts, with one very bad weekend, one missed race out of eight, and a superb third-place finish towards the end of the series. He has the

Congratulations on a fantastic race and superb finish, Jeffrey! My youngest son, Derek Michaud, age 11, was kart #9 in the Honda Junior class in the Coupe de Montreal Series. He was determined from the beginning of the season that the Championship was what he wanted and was going to get. With two bad races, Derek was even more determined to stay focused on winning, and win that Championship he did. Not only did he come first,

Motorsport Club of Ottawa - The LINK

December 2003

becoming the Champion in Honda Junior class in Quebec, but he is the youngest driver to have done it (the youngest had been 13)! The class is for drivers from 11 to l4 years old. Derek was also a Rookie Driver in that class this year. He set a goal and went out and got it. What an accomplishment for Derek! He didnt stop there: Derek, like Jeffrey, did very well at the Grand Nationals in Shannonville, finishing first in the pre-final. He had a strong second in the final race and was heading for first place and the Bear win, but with two laps to go, an accident pushed Derek back and he finished fifth overall. Good try, Derek! Watch out for him there next year! At the Canadian Grand Nationals at Mosport, he finished fourth in the pre-final, but only tenth in the final. He had mechanical difficulties midway in the race, which dropped him

from a strong third to tenth. Derek also finished in third place at the SRA Enduro. It was a good year for Derek overall and he enjoyed the year-end Coupe de Montreal banquet for his BIG first-place trophy and prize money for winning the Championship in Honda Junior Class. Last, but with a very good year indeed, is Kelly-Mark Michaud, kart #73 in the Honda Senior class in the Coupe de Montreal Series. Kelly-Mark, like his younger brother Derek, won the Championship in Honda Senior in that series, out of 27 karts. With three first-place wins and two second-place wins out of eight races, he was also very determined to finish his Honda season this year with the Championship, and he did. It wasnt always easy for KellyMark, who is in Grade 12 now, to

miss a lot of Thursdays and Fridays and still manage to keep himself on the honour roll. Kelly-Mark considers his education to be very important. He always did a good job of balancing both education and racing, and doing great in both. Kelly-Mark finished first at a Mosport Kart Club race in a Honda Senior race. He finished third at the St. Jean-sur-Richelieu Street Race and fifth at the Chicoutimi Street Race. Kelly finished his season by taking out his ICC Shifter kart, which he hadnt driven all year, and did the SRA Enduro in that class with his partner, Chris Swinwood. The duo won second place, with a lot of teams out there, and in the cold and rain. Good job, guys! And an overall very good year for Kelly-Mark! This year Kelly-Mark had to be content with driving only a Honda this year, after

05

Motorsport Club of Ottawa - The LINK

December 2003
driving a lot of Hondas and Shifters last year, but watch out for KellyMark in two-stroke again next year. Congratulations, Kelly-Mark, for your drive to win that championship this year! Great job! This has been another great karting year for some MCO kart drivers with the KDM Racing Team, and especially for us, the Michauds: not only do we have one Championship winner in our family, but two. Both kids decided to do it in the same year! We at KDM Racing would like to congratulate each of these MCO kart drivers for their hard work, dedication, determination and drive to success in 2003. Many will possibly change classes next year. As rookies in 2004, we wish them much success for a fun and great karting year. Thats it for the 2003 karting news. Ill keep you posted again next year on how our MCO drivers have done with their new challenges!

Miscellaneous Rumblings II - August

By John Powell Oh, good grief Well. It's Tuesday July the 8th, and I woke up this morning so tired I felt like I'd been putting up square bales in the mow all day yesterday. The telephone's been out all day today (a system failure we're told), and it probably won't be fixed until sometime tomorrow. The cell phone has about 30 seconds of time left, and Susan's having trouble buying more time without going to the phone centre in Orleans, although they did let her make a call to Bell regarding our dead land-line phone. Right now I'm totally out of contact with the outside world. I can't call RX7 Heaven to find out when we're going to take the car in for a frontend alignment, and I can't find out if it's been decided to have a monthly Club meeting tonight after all. Susan could find out from a pay phone in Orleans, but how could she call me? I could go to a pay phone myself, but the nearest one I know of is in the new Loeb supermarket at Innes and Tenth Line. That's about a forty-five minute round trip, not including time for calls, and would mean leaving poor old Pig Pen alone. The problem here is that, given his present condition, when he has to go out to pee, it has to be right now, or we're left with a big smelly puddle on the floor. I'm house bound, there's nothing critical enough to do outside in this heat and humidity, so what to do? Well, there's a rattly old air conditioner in Susan's office, where the computer is located, and I have to start this month's column, so-o-o . Oh yeah, and with all that's been going on the last month or so, I'm thinking of changing my name to Charlie Brown. Rats!!!!!!!

Pig Pen? He's one of our four dogs. The best-laid plans o' mice and men gang oft agley! Thus the immortal Robbie Burns and how right he was. In last month's column I gave a brief outline of the progress on the repairs to the RX7, up to the transplanting of a new front end to the car. Things seemed to be going well enough that we planned to have it ready at least a week prior to the Ted Powell Memorial Summer Trophy Races. At last, it seemed, I would be able to run in my own club's race, and as a bonus, give Dave Ferreira, my nephew and crew member, a taste of driving the car in the Lapping School, and also use my worker laps to check out the car. Then Robbie's astute observation came into play. First, though, let's give you an idea of the work that was involved in repairing the car by means of short pictorial essay. The quality may

not be the best as the shots were taken with a disposable camera, and I had to play with them a bit. The first photo shows the car as it was before it met the wall. I don't have any shots of the damage after the hit, so you'll have to use my description and your imagination. First imagine the air dam gone, spread along the base of the wall in many pieces, and the bumper pushed over to the driver's right about a foot with the plastic covering split. Next, the tip of the right fender was dented and the remaining front bodywork and hood was crushed and pushed back in a line extending from the tip of the right fender to the centre of the wheel arch on the left one. Underneath, the first six inches of the right frame rail and the first foot of the left were also displaced to the right, and the front cross-tube connecting them was bent. The radiator bulkhead was crushed and pushed back following the line mentioned above, and the left inner wall of the engine compartment had several stress creases running up to the strut tower. Thankfully, the oil

07

Motorsport Club of Ottawa - The LINK

December 2003
cooler and radiator were merely dislocated but not damaged, although the electric fan motor was pushed hard against the water pump pulley and the mounting frame cracked. On a road car, this probably would have been a write-off. The first two shots show the extent to which the damaged body and frame had to be removed in order to ensure the new pieces could be properly aligned. The strut tower was suspect. So it had to go too. The next photo, we have all the new pieces aligned, welded in place, thanks to fellow Club member Martin Walter, and painted. The following photo shows the suspension, radiator, oil cooler and bumper back in place. The next two photos show the new body parts temporarily attached to determine fit before being prepped and painted, and roughly what the car will look like when it's finished. This was about two weeks before the Ted Powell race weekend, and other than the bodywork, there were a few other jobs to do, such as re-locating the engine air intake and a front-end alignment, but we thought we'd be done in plenty of time for the race. And then our plans, both man and mouse, began to gang agley. The arrangement with Doug Scott of RX7 Heaven was that, in return for putting their logo on the car and having the work done on down time, including work that had to be sent out to his painter and alignment shop, I would receive a discount on all the costs involved. This worked well up to the time of the last photos, but then some full fare jobs came in to Doug's shop and we got delayed several times. Amongst other things, this meant that we missed the slow period at Doug's painter, and he now had to do this himself, also when time allowed, which added to the delays. The upshot of all this was that the car wasn't painted in time to get the wheel alignment done, the engine intake ductwork and the air dam finished, and to do all the other minor jobs and run my pre-race checklist, before the Lapping School prior to the race weekend, so we had to withdraw from both. It's now July 17th, and we're almost done. The two remaining big jobs, the air dam and new engine air intake should be finished over the weekend, and then there will only be a couple of small jobs, running the check list, and cleaning up the car inside and out. We'll miss the DAC race weekend, which is too bad because they have a test day, and there's no way I'm going to race the car after such a major repair without some testing. However, with Susan away at her family's cottage, I'll have to stay home anyway to look after the menagerie, including Pig Pen, who's still sick but improving. This means our first race back will be the BARC race meeting in early August, with a test day, so I hope to have some better news next month. And hopefully some more photos. This is Therapy? My wife says this column is a cathartic for me. Better check my dictionary first to see what that means .......... O.K., I can live with that. I guess I have been dumping on some people, situations and other things in my columns, and unfortunately (or fortunately) there are items that keep cropping up that give me good reason - at least in my opinion. And from comments I've seen in the Club Forum, some of you share some of my frustrations - not the least of these being idiot drivers. You know, I'll bet that most opinion

columns, not to mention editorials in newspapers, provide some sort of catharsis for their authors. I include The Sun as a newspaper here, as I'm feeling charitable (Do you read a newspaper - or the Sun?). And how about you? Do you want to vent about something? If so, for your convenience I have provided the following outline to get you started just fill in the blanks. (i) Why those (.....................)! (ii) What a (.......................). If you think you've got a good one going, send it to me and I'll include it in a future column, anonymously, if you wish. P.P.S. I'll bet you think I'm trying to get you to do some of my writing for me, don't you? (Why that (................)! Who does he think he is? Why I've got a mind to (.................).) And do you think I'm really going to answer that? Parting Shot You have to wonder sometimes whether we humans really are the animals with the highest level of intelligence, or at least some of us. Late one Sunday morning in midJuly I was going over to RX7 Heaven to work on the car, when I came upon a late-twenty-something young woman on roller blades without a helmet or elbow and knee pads. Not that they would have helped her much in any unfortunate happenstance at that moment, as she was blithely skating along at a moderate pace right in the middle of the westbound lane of a paved county road!!! She didn't even look behind as I and the car behind me came up upon her, nor seemingly took any notice as we both had to take to the oncoming traffic lane to pass her. It seems that I have finally found someone worse than Ottawa cyclists.

Miscellaneous Rumblings II Addendum Septemberum (or something like that)

By John Powell This time, I behaved myself. We finally got the RX7 back on the track at the BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races, and this time there were no break-outs, and no run-ins with the walls. We were nowhere near the fastest GTC car out there, but we finished all our races, albeit with some slight mechanical glitches, and got the second signature for my Regional licence. Looking back at the BEMC Spring Trophy Races in May, I really did let the emotions of finally returning to racing get the better of me, and completely forgot that my objectives for this year were to get re-accustomed to racing, learn the car under real racing conditions (my opinion now is that Solo I is not a true preparation for wheel-to-wheel racing but that's another topic), and finish enough races to get my Regional licence back. The only good that came out of the May weekend was learning that I still had the competitive spirit, even though at the time it was not really appropriate. At the BARC weekend, I stuck strictly to the objectives, with the additional one of testing the car on the Friday to check out all the repairs. In brief, the weekend went as follows: Friday Missed the first session due to mis-reading the schedule. Ran the next three sessions with a strict rev limit of 8,000 rpm, checked out the repairs, which were OK, and with information from the Toyo web site, which if I'd been thinking properly I would have had months ago, sorted out the correct tire pressures. Lost power in the third of these sessions, and discovered that we had burned out the coil for the trailing plugs due to a faulty high tension lead connector at the coil. This caused the lead to come loose and the coil to short-circuit, burning a

09

Motorsport Club of Ottawa - The LINK

December 2003
hole in the insulation in the high tension lead tower. Missed the last session of the day changing the coil and finding someone to fix the high tension wire. We eventually discovered that Strudwick Motorsports could repair it, which they did. Saturday increased rev limit to 8,500 rpm. No practice due to the track doctor being delayed by an emergency. Mis-read track conditions and used rain tires for qualifying. Discovered on the out lap that the track was drying fast, and had to ease off in order not to damage the tires. Qualified 9th i/c, 15th o/a, time 2:00.420. First GT Sprints race in the afternoon. Messed up 2nd to 3rd shift at the start in front of everybody in the pits and lost two places. Finished 8th i/c, 20th o/a, best time 1:47.498. Sunday increased rev limit to 9,000 rpm. Second GT Sprints race in the morning. Missed 4th to 3rd downshift going into 9, lost only time. Finished 6th i/c, 16th o/a, best time 1:47.435. Third GT Sprints race in the afternoon. Missed 2nd to 3rd shift coming out of 5b, lost only time. Car began to overheat going up the back straight on lap 4. Did one slow lap then pitted. Lost almost four minutes in the pits at a cost of one class and three overall positions. Finished 6th i/c and 20th o/a, best time 1:46.260. Got second signature for Regional licence. While our best time was a little over four seconds slower than the breakout time at the BEMC event in May, we had cut our rev limit from 10,000 rpm in 2nd and 9,500 rpm in the higher gears to the rev limits noted above in all gears, and despite being slower, overall it was a much more successful weekend. There were a good number of entries in the three GT Sprints races, with 13, 10 and 7 starters in GTC. With a few exceptions, dry track times in GTC were generally a little slower that I expected, given the warmer weather compared to May, so I wasn't overly disappointed in my own times in view of our lower rev limits. There are a few issues we have to address before the CRDA race meeting: the coil high tension leads are now taped on, but a more permanent fix is needed; a way will have to be found to stop the gear lever from hanging up in the 5th/reverse slot when trying to get 3rd; and, the high speed overheating problem will have to be fixed. At this writing, I am working on the latter, and I suspect that the relocation of the oil cooler necessitated by the body repairs is part of the problem. The deadline for The Link is now imminent, so we'll have to end this update here more news of the exploits of the Club's old fart racer next month. Parting Shot A few months back, in a discussion on what is commonly known as High Tech, I outlined my reasons for what I believe was the most appropriate name for the current era. Well, starting in the afternoon of August the 15th, most of North Eastern North America experienced a monster black-out. In the areas affected, the High Tech electronics of the Electronic Age didn't work, the information of the Information Age didn't get out, the Postindustrial Age was reduced to the same state as that of the Preindustrial age, and the impacts of the shock were felt world wide. The reason for all this was no electric power. Is there any doubt now that the age we are living in, and have been for the last century, is the Electric Age!

Miscellaneous Rumblings II - October

John Powell Ain't technology wonderful when it works. And if it doesn't, when you can get it fixed in a reasonable time without any hassles! Well, after only three months, the new computer went, to put it diplomatically, mammary glands upwards. It's now been over two weeks of buck-passing and delays between Staples, where we purchased it, and the manufacturer, Hewlett-Packard, and still no working computer. I have access to a borrowed lap-top, which I am using now, but its availability is very limited, so this month's column will perforce be shorter than usual, and you will notice that the minutes of the September General and Executive meetings are missing from this month's issue of The Link. My apologies to all. You know, from my dealings with purveyors of electronic consumer goods over the last several years, it seems to me that service is very good when they're trying to sell you a product, but sadly lacking when it comes to fixing a problem. There's usually a litany of delays, misinformation, un-returned 'phone calls, and lame excuses. This latter instance really takes the cake as the worst I can remember, and in a future column I hope to deal with it in one of my MCO Consumer Reports.

December 2003
After the Lord Mayor's Show comes the sh*t wagon. This quaint expression comes from the ceremonial procession for each newly-installed Lord Mayor of London (U.K.), in which specimens of the genus equus have historically been featured in prominent roles, thus requiring a post-event road clean-up. My Lord Mayor's Show was the CRDA/VARAC Labour Day weekend race meeting at Mosport, in which we somehow qualified the RX7 Heaven RX7 first in GTC. Things fell off a bit from there due to some tactical errors on my part, such as getting myself snookered a couple of times when dealing with lapped traffic and/or being lapped while fighting for position, and we dropped to third in class in our first race and fifth in our second. In our third race, however, we recovered a little to take second in class, thanks to a couple of other drivers breaking out, and I received my first trophy since the days of racing the MGB thirty-four years ago. The most satisfactory part of all this was that for all three races we were in the thick of the fight with the five or so fastest cars in GT-C. Two weeks later at the BEMC Indian Summer Trophy Races, also at Mosport, came the sh*t wagon. Influenced by the previous race weekend's results, I was, perhaps aiming a bit too high. Before the BEMC weekend I pondered on the possibility of repeating my first-inclass trophy from my last Indian Summer Trophy Races in the MGB in 1969. I was soon brought back to earth with a resounding thud! For some reason the car's handling seemed to have gone away, and turns two, four and nine produced several tense moments, as well as one in turn one, where the car is usually very good. Added to this was that the engine seemed down on power somewhat, and in the second race we developed a misfire at 9,000 rpm, which by the middle of the third race had dropped to 7,000 rpm. At this point I called it quits as we hadn't been able to figure out the cause, and I didn't want to risk the engine with one race weekend still to go. Our lap times were, on average, a good five seconds lower than the previous weekend, and our finishing positions were all in the lower half of the class. Well, no one said that racing would be easy, so it's back to the shop to try to figure out what happened and fix it if we can. And I hate trying to figure out electrical problems. Even with a diagnostic chart it always seems to be a drawn-out and fiddly job, requiring many of the abilities of a contortionist. Ugh! Parting Shot I know that I've mentioned this before, but when I raced out of the east end of Toronto in the 1960s, I didn't realize how fortunate I was. With Mosport only 45 minutes away, and Harewood about an hour and a half, trailering a car was no problem. Now being located in the east end of our new Mega-mini City, and having one-way towing times of two hours and forty minutes to Shannonville and four and a half hours to Mosport, it's a real pain in the derriere. With most of the race meetings at Mosport, having to cope with the idiots on the 401 has often left me wondering whether or not going racing again is worth all the aggravation (it is, of course, but ). I have also developed a much deeper appreciation for those who guide 18-wheelers down our highways. So the next time I hear someone from the GTA whinging about how far and how much trouble it is to trailer a car to Shannonville, they're really going to get the sharp end of my tongue.

regarding a conference call with the O.R.O.. July 4th Instructional Lapping Day This event was discussed at some length, as follows: Ron Woltman opened by noting that he supported lapping, but if race cars driven by race drivers are to be excluded, then all such cars should be excluded. He added that a search of the GCRs provided no guidance on this matter, that the proposed protocol was issued late and was somewhat vague, and there is a perception of unfairness in some quarters. Bennett Leckie, organizer of the event, noted that there were 48 entries at present, and that the proposal is that closedwheel race cars would be allowed with guest drivers, such as crew members and sponsors. This would be an opportunity for them to experience driving a race car. He later added that some events had a separate run group for race cars, but that our time is limited due to it being a one day event. Ron then invited comments by members of the Executive and the Club members present, which are contained in the summary below with the number of respondents in brackets: exclude race cars regardless of driver (2); include with novice/non-race drivers (5); not comfortable/intimidation factor if never on a track with race car drivers (2); wouldnt be an issue if not prior to race weekend (1); lapping should be for lappers/event was set up for lappers until the last minute (2); if racers too aggressive, they could be disqualified from lapping event (1); and, the rule should be clear (1). The discussion ended with the following points: Ron Woltman determined from John Blouin that he would have two guest drivers (sponsors), and then noted that the consensus of those present is that there would be no race cars allowed if they are driven by competitors entered as drivers in the TPSTR. Bennett Leckie added that such cars would only be allowed if driven by crew members, sponsors, friends, or similar guests. John Blouin noted that the rule should be in the Supplementary Regulations for the event, and Ron asked Bennett to write the rule. The Link Mark Atos noted that there has been a mis-communication at the printer, and the May Link is only now being printed. He went on to state that he has nothing for the June Link except minutes of meetings and John Powells column. He noted with some emphasis that the deadline has passed and he has not yet received any Directors Reports. He is therefore considering not printing a June issue, as the paucity of content would render such non cost-effective. Ron Woltman replied that he would send in a contribution after the Exec. Meeting, if that was not too late. Mark replied that late contributions make a timely printing difficult, but he will publish an issue if there is enough content. Mark went on to note that electronic distribution of The Link costs almost nothing, and asked if it would be possible to offer members a membership discount if they elect to receive only an e-copy. He added that most of the Club portion of each members dues, approximately $48.00 per year, goes to expenses for The Link. Ron Woltman replied that we should think about it for a while, and bring the suggestion forward to the September Exec. Meeting. Jeff Graves suggested that we try to find a sponsor for the monthly mailing costs, to which Mark replied that we would need a Public Relations person for this task. Membership Ron Woltman advised that he had not heard anything yet from Steve Greiner regarding the membership computer. Eric McKinnon reported that he is starting to clear up the backlog. The records are 70 members behind, and it will take three weeks to deal with them. Bennett Leckie noted that there is still no up-to-date list of members for CASC due to our recent problems, and asked the Membership Secretary to send a list as soon as possible and requisition a cheque for affiliation dues. This will be done. Solo II Greg Kierstead reported that he will wait until the current series is completed and then see what may be available for next year. Ron Woltman asked if we have a back-up lot for this year, to which Greg replied that none seems to be available. There was a discussion regarding timing equipment and the possibility of borrowing the set from Pat Weightman. There are some issues over this, including Pats concern over the storage facility. Bob Benson suggested that the Club buy its own equipment. Ted Powell Summer Trophy Races (Note: This years event will now be called the Ted Powell Memorial Trophy Races.) A cheque for $500.00 should be sent to Mike Kilby as an advance on the BBQ expenses. Richard Muise gave a brief run-down of his to-do list, noting especially that he has team leaders, but needs workers. There was a brief discussion regarding the proposed evening test session on July 4th. Richard noted that it would be costly, and that we would need an ambulance and tow truck. Ron Woltman briefed those present on his sponsorship negotiations with Waupoos Winery, and Richard gave a brief run-down of other

sponsorship possibilities. Race Track at Calabogie Ron Woltman opened a brief discussion on the possibility of a new road course at Calabogie. It is not yet known if this track will be suitable for a race meeting. Ron Woltman left the meeting at 7:35 pm due to a prior commitment, and turned the meeting over to the Vice-President. Member Participation There was a brief discussion regarding the level of participation of members as volunteers. It was noted that the same people seem to be continually volunteering as workers, etc., that this was a problem common to all volunteer organizations, and that the Clubs record is probably better than average. Club Merchandise Warren Haywood reported that Club baseball caps are on order, the cost would be $12.50 each, they would be in better condition than the well-used one modeled by your Secretary, and perhaps a quantity deal could be done. Richard Muise noted that there would be more than 100 required for volunteers. Rally Warren then reported that the RallyX series was a go, with four clubs participating. Insurance would be $200.00 plus $50.00 per car, the rules would be similar to those of the Winter RallyX, the total costs per event would be $675.00, and the average gross income $1,000.00. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:15 p.m.. Prepared by John Powell, Secretary, MCO, June 9th 2003, amended June 18th 2003 Tel. 613-835-2910; e-mail mgb296@hotmail.com. Solo II Greg Kierstead noted that with the end of the hockey playoffs, the facilities at the Corel Centre should now be available for the real start of our Solo II season. Two June dates are confirmed, a new schedule is available on line, and future dates will be confirmed on a monthly basis. The Performance Control School will be held on July 26th, and workers and instructors are needed. Solo I Jeff Graves gave a brief run-down of the recent event at the Mosport DDT, including the exploits of Club members. Rally In the absence of Warren Haywood, Craig Hamm gave the following brief report: In a run-down of upcoming events Craig mentioned that the next event will be a TSD rally on June 14th beginning at The Cheshire Cat Pub in Carp, which would be a good event for novices. The next performance rally will be the Black Bear on June the 21st weekend starting at Dorset, and it will use European-style pace notes. The Link - Part I Ron Woltman mentioned that we would be submitting an invoice to CASC for 75% of the mailing costs for the Inside Track CASC Promotional Issue insert. Open Wheel Ron Woltman informed members that Rick Miskiman has resigned as Director and Open Wheel representative, effective June 2nd 2003, and that a replacement will need to be found. In his absence, Nigel Mortimer reported briefly that there are now ten F1600 cars in the Ottawa area, gave a brief run-down of the results of the recent event at

Karting Paul Swinwood reported that the situation is quiet at the moment, that the track at Quyon is now being worked on, with racing to begin this summer, and there is a possibility of an MCO enduro at the track later in the year. Jim Holtom added an account of the recent Ron Fellows/Sunoco event at Sutton, Ont., at which 300 karts were entered. Closed Wheel Richard Muise gave a brief account of the last three Regional races and the Trans Am weekend at Mosport. Bob Armstrong gave a summary of the events during the Touring/GT series race at turn 7 on the Trans Am which resulted in slight spectator injuries and a passing under the yellow incident. At the request of Richard Muise, several racing members gave summaries of their recent exploits. Of note was the refusal of Your Secretary, due to acute embarrassment, to give an account of the results (or lack of same) of his return to racing. He referred those who wish to know all the lurid details of his misadventures to his column in the June issue of The Link. (?) We have obtained product support from Waupoos Winery and Evian Water, and Transport Canada is again being contacted regarding the possibility of exhibiting their alternative fuel vehicles. Ron also explained that discussions with Gunther Schmidt have revealed that our plan to provide extra crew passes is contrary to a gentlemens agreement amongst race organizers. There was a discussion regarding proposed reserved paved paddock spaces for those who enter early, and how this would be affected by the 50 or so entrants who have pre-entered for the whole season. The proposal will be reviewed. Instructional Lapping Day Bennett Leckie reported that there are now 49 confirmed entries with 5 or 6 to come, leaving 6 spots open. Sam Mandia is recruiting instructors, and the BMW Club has been a lot of help. Later in the meeting, Jim Holtom asked if entrants must hold a valid drivers licence, and the answer was yes. The Link - Part II Mark Atos voiced his oft-heard plea for Link contributions, and in response to a question, noted that the average publishing cost is $500.00 per issue.

Club Display Jean MacGillivray advised that the display is being up-dated for the race At this point there was a break from meeting, that a Solo I contribution is approximately 7:56:30 to 8:07:45 coming from Jeff Graves, but that she p.m. (By the Secretarys economy- still needs photos of open wheel model watch.) competitors. Re-commencing with the race, Ron Woltman advised members that the resignation of Rick Miskiman included Co-chair of the Race Committee, which will leave them a bit short of manpower (sic).

Treasurer Bob Benson reported the following: There is currently $51,825.00 in the bank, but this includes set-offs of $5,060.00 for the book, $6,900.00 for the race weekend, and $3,000.00 for CASC affiliation fees, and there was Electrathon an NSF charge for a Race School Ron Woltman advised those present cheque from a student. Ron Woltman requested that copies of the up-dated membership list be sent to The Link for publication, and to the Treasurer for calculation of the payment due to CASC for affiliation fees. The Link - Part I There was a brief discussion regarding the CASC mailing subsidy of $1.00 per members household receiving The Link for the Inside Track insert. It was noted by Mark Atos that the extra mailing cost for the insert was more than the subsidy, and Ron Woltman will discuss this with CASC. Mark Atos noted that more address labels will be required for the July General Meeting. Solo II Greg Kierstead reported that the next event would be on the following Sunday, and that he intends to move the schedule back to the weekend. There was a brief discussion regarding moving the supply and equipment shed back to the west end, and possible locations. Greg next noted that we own a date at the Aviation Museum for a demonstration event, that Bennett Leckie had found a part of the property more suited to our needs, and that the potential use of this space will be investigated. Ron Woltman suggested that we should plan a same-day PR event for the Take It to The Street programme which would demonstrate the basics of driving skills, and requested a possible date. Greg advised that July would be a problem, but that sometime in August would be OK. Ron also suggested that Const. Parent, the manager of the

Returning to the Take It to The Street programme, Ron reported that he had attended the recent event at the Ottodrome, though he had not received an invitation. Ron went on to say that we should invite those involved in the program to a Solo II event and show the flag regarding our position, including the progression from there through lapping and Solo I to legitimate road racing. Mark Atos next reported that we now have a supply of 5,000 Club letterheads on hand, which were obtained at a considerable saving. He then suggested that the person responsible for such saving be thanked with a $50.00 gift certificate for Louis Restaurant, which was approved. Secretary John Powell reported briefly on the impacts of his recent computer crash, noting that some lost data had been recovered, and there is a possibility that more may be reclaimed. Ron Woltman initiated a short discussion regarding the Clubs computer situation, asking for suggestions as to who needs what, such as membership, Solo II, etc. At the close of the discussion, Ron asked Greg Kierstead, as Solo II seems to have the most pressing need, to contact Nick Berry regarding acquiring a lap-top. Ted Powell Memorial Summer Trophy Races Richard Muise reported that the race is looking good but that there has been an increase of three room/nights in the budget, he has no Judges of Fact, and needs a Chief Mock Grid Marshal. Suggestions for possible candidates for these positions were made from the floor. We do not yet have a boom truck for vehicle recovery, and some alternatives were suggested. We also need a pace car and pace car lights. Mark Atos will investigate the cost of the latter. Treasurer Bob Benson reported that we currently have $44,534.54 in the bank, with disposable funds of $28,807.12. The book reserve currently stands at approximately $5,225.00.

Rally Ron Woltman gave an outline of a proposal for a social rally to the Waupoos Winery for either a lunch or supper. Craig Hamm, the potential organizer, noted that we would own the event, but asked if there could be joint marketing with Waupoos. MCO History Book Ron Woltman reported that the printing costs have now risen to approximately $10,000.00 for a run of 200 copies. The Club may have to bankroll any shortfall of funds pending receipt of more book revenue from such sources as sponsors and book sales. Mark Atos asked if any independent booksellers had been approached to sell the book, and Ron replied that without a PR representative, we have no one to do that. John Powell asked that, as this was a book regarding local history, had anyone approached organizations such as the Ontario Trillium Fund for a cultural or similar grant. Ron Woltman again replied that without a PR representative, we have no one to do that. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:50 p.m.. The balance will be due only after the first printing of approximately 250 copies has been sold. The text is due at the printer by August 11th, with publication expected for November 3rd 2003. Regarding the collection of book revenues and placing of orders, Donald Tarte has volunteered to be in charge of sales and marketing. He can be contacted at 613.234.1000, or via e-mail at ddtarte@look.ca. There was a brief discussion about the price of the book during which Bennett Leckie noted that at a sale price of $35.00 and a production cost of about $50.00 per volume, we may have to consider a price increase after the initial offering. Solo II Greg Kierstead reported as follows: The Club series is running well, but the Performance Control School currently has only 10 entries due to the change of dates and the holiday. Instructors and workers will be recruited soon. In the ensuing discussion, in answer to a suggestion to look at another date, Greg stated that it had already been changed once, and to do so again would be of doubtful benefit. Ron Woltman then suggested that police and politicians involved with the take it to the track programme be invited. Regarding another Solo II event in conjunction with the Capital Invasion, Greg had concerns if we participated without contacting the City Councillor for the Lynx Stadium area and the By-law department, as we could be seen as being uncooperative regarding their noise concerns. Solo I Jeff Graves reported that entry revenues for the Regional series so far this year are below the break even point for most events. Regarding sending MCO observers to an event, Jeff noted that there is only one Shannonville Solo I weekend left this year, in mid-September. Jeff will make arrangements to observe at this event, and select our observers. Rally In the absence of Warren Haywood, Craig Hamm reported that we will have three or four teams in this years Targa Newfoundland, and that the Rideau Run rally of August 23rd will start from the Canadian Tire parking lot in Perth. Ron Woltman noted that the Lynx Stadium is still a possibility, and that the present configuration at the Ottodrome could cause problems, and site rental could be expensive. Annual General Meeting Ron Woltman requested that a notice be published in The Link regarding the AGM, and noted that we still needed a Chair for the Nominating committee. Later in the meeting Dave Butler arrived and volunteered to take the position. Ted Powell Summer Trophy Races There was a discussion which reviewed the 2003 TPSTR during which the following major points were raised: Sherissa Microys noted that the gate admission should be $15.00 not $12.00 as this was an agreement of the Ontario Race Organizers Committee. She also agreed to again be Registrar for the 2004 event. Also discussed was engaging someone to sell general admission tickets, and Paul Swinwood suggested that we contact the Kinsmen and similar organizations. It was noted that the ticket price and details of the workers meeting should be on the race handbill. A thank-you letter should be sent out to workers and also their suggestions for improvements should be solicited. Bob Benson reported that the gross income for the race currently stands at $29,114.90 with $500.00 yet to be received from Transport Canada. Expenses to date stand at $28,567.75, and there is an account payable of $2,123.95 to CASC for levies. This leaves an estimated deficit of approximately $1,200.00 plus ambulance costs, the worst case scenario being a possible deficit of $3,200.00. Ron Woltman suggested that we should have a Test Day next year and promote it to professional teams. Richard Muise then suggested that we should put out feelers for someone to market the event, and Ron replied that Joanne Padvaiskas

might be a possibility. There was a general discussion regarding next years date. Suggested were June 5th and 6th, the Canadian Grand Prix weekend if that event remains cancelled, and also a July date. Richard Muise will indicate to Shannonville the dates in which we are interested. Bob Benson noted that we need a committee in place before work can start and cheques be issued. Winter Driving Schools Paul Swinwood has again volunteered to be the organizer, and has already started on the groundwork, examining the property at the Ottodrome, etc. The Ottawa Police Service fleet management section is interested in the possibility of schools for their drivers due to concerns over the number of incidents with vehicle damage. If possible, Paul would like to see schools running every weekend from early January to mid-March plus some mid-week dates. We will probably have to arrange for our own snow plowing this year, and we need to have a contract specifying terms and conditions, dates, etc.. Solo I Jeff Graves gave a brief up-date on members results, and noted that while the overall number of entries at events was looking bad earlier in the season, the situation is now looking better. He added that we will be observing the OMSC event in two weeks time, and the number of observers will be determined by the Executive Committee. MCO 50th Anniversary History Book Ron Woltman reported that 78% of the text is now at the publishers, with the remainder to be sent by the end of September. It is possible that the book may not be ready for the Annual Banquet. Secretary Your electronically challenged Secretary gave an up-date on his latest computer woes, and there ensued another discussion regarding the purchase of a computer by the Club. Solo II Greg Kiersteads report dealt solely with the Capital Invasion Solo II event as follows: Our insurance does not allow for spectators, but such are present at the Capital Invasion. A brief discussion followed on how to control access to our venue by such methods as wrist bands or a separate entrance. This matter will be dealt with by the event organizer. Regarding the insurance, there was some discussion on how best to protect the Club from a worst-case scenario, and that ASN-FIA should be contacted regarding the type of event and the insurance implications. Rally of the Tall Pines Bennett Leckie noted that there will need to be some coordination of the members who will work this event. Membership Bennett next noted that there have been some problems in getting upto-date membership data to CASC regarding members affiliations. Ron Woltman noted that this must be rectified before the CASC annual General Meeting as it could affect the number of votes to which we are entitled. Instructional Lapping Day Bennett Leckie raised the topic of an Honorarium to be paid to the BMW Club of Ottawa, and the following points were discussed: The net income of the event was $1,746.00, and the participation of BMW Club members was approximately 25% of the total. Bennett suggested that an honorarium of 25% of the net income was therefore an appropriate basis for opening a discussion. Ron Woltman opened by stating that a sum of $350.00 might be appropriate, but Bob Benson noted that, while some recognition is deserved, MCO bore the financial risks and organization responsibility for the event, and suggested that $300.00 would be more equitable. After some discussion, the Board of Directors approved a resolution that: In recognition of the valuable assistance of the BMW Club in running the successful 2003 MCO Instructional Lapping Day, MCO would like to invite them to accept an honorarium of $300.00. (See Note 4. above.) Bennett Leckie will deliver the Honorarium to the BMW Club. New Web Site Manager Ron Woltman invited Aleida Dikland, who is interested in volunteering for this position, to address those present. Aleida noted that she had already spoken to Rob Microys, the outgoing Web Site Editor, and would like to know what the Club would require. After some discussion regarding the web site, maintenance requirements, the Executive e-mail list responsibilities, etc., Aleida indicated that she was willing to volunteer for the position. In view of the foregoing, the Board of Directors approved a resolution that: Aleida Dikland be appointed as Web Site Manager effective immediately, replacing Rob Microys. (See Note 4. above, also note that the title has been changed from Web Site Editor to Web Site Manager.) RSO Meeting Ryan Huber usually attends these meetings as he is now located in Toronto, and affiliation fees will be discussed at the next RSO meeting.

This policy will not now be applied due to the objections of clubs which organize two or more races, on the grounds that net income from a profitable race should be applied against those which show a deficit. Questions were raised by those clubs who only organize one race meeting on the grounds that, if their single race showed a net deficit, they would then be treated less favourably than the foregoing clubs. Annual Elections Ron Woltman opened by briefly explaining for those interested the different roles and responsibilities of elected members of the Board of Directors and members of the Executive Committee. Membership Ron then next outlined the current issues regarding Membership administration, including the recent resignation of the latest Membership Secretary, and noted that Dave Butler has expressed some interest in the position. Bennett Leckie advised that he would be available to assist with any transition to a new incumbent. Later in the meeting, Dave Butler confirmed that he will volunteer to assume the appointment of Membership Secretary. The Link Ron Woltman announced that Mark Atos has resigned as Editor of the Link, and a replacement is urgently required. Those present expressed their thanks to Mark for his efforts as editor. Annual Banquet Sam Mandia gave an up-date as follows: The menu and information regarding ticket sales and price is on the web site. He would like his contact information to be included so that those interested can deal directly with him. Sam noted that he will need help at the Banquet to handle any door sales of tickets. Amongst the door prizes there will be a merchandise donation from Talon Tire to a value of $400.00, and a donation from Inside Track magazine. Club Web Site Aleida Dikland gave an up-date on recent improvements, and noted that if anyone wants information to be posted, she will need linking data. Solo I Jeff Graves provided an information package on the organization of a Solo I event (att.), and gave an overview. The following points were raised during discussion of the topic: Net income and losses for each event are shared between organizing clubs on the basis of the number of events each one has organized during the season. Except for track rental, the financial and human resource requirements of a Solo I event are slightly higher than a Solo II event, but much lower than a race weekend. The sharing of risk (costs, etc.) is a model that should be used in other areas of motorsports to keep them healthy. Jeff closed by indicating that the Solo I series organizers would like a decision as soon as possible. Ron Woltman noted that the BoD elections are upon us, and any decision would be up to the new Board and Executive Committee. It was probable that a decision would be made by them before December 31st 2003. Track Dates for 2004 Ron Woltman opened a discussion on this topic by noting that dates would be required for the Racing School, Ted Powell Summer Trophy Races, a Lapping School/Weekend, and possibly a Solo I event. He added that there would be an ORO meeting the following evening to discuss race dates. In discussion the following points were raised: Racing School - the tentative date would be April 17/18, but the preference would be to run it one week prior to the first race at Mosport (April 24.25?). TPSTR - possible dates would be June 4/5/6, June 11/12/13, or July 16/17/18. There was some discussion on the desirable conditions for having a Friday test day, and having CASC clearly show on their schedule whether or not one is to be held. Lapping School/Weekend - a two day event would be preferred, possibly in July or August, depending on the dates for the Racing School and the TPSTR. Solo I - a date in September would be preferred, and the track would be booked through SoloOntario. Ferrari and Race Car Parade 2004 (1) As a footnote to the foregoing topic, Ron Woltman advised that this event must be run in conjunction with Italian Week, which will be held on July 1st to 7th. Racing School - 2004 Richard Muise advised that a firm decision to hold this event must be made soon. Rob Microys has again volunteered to be the organizer. Ottodrome Winter Events Track Bennett Leckie has conducted a recce of the site and noted that we will have to add gravel in some places to reduce humps and protect the paved portions of the site. There is the possibility of laying out a RallyX track at the rear of the site, and we should consider the ramifications of having to look after the snow plowing ourselves. The issue of a firm contract with the Ottodrome was discussed, and the point was made that reference should be had to the fact that the 2003 rental fee included plowing, while this years will not. Winter Solo II/Slush n Slide We need a contact to approach regarding modification of the Solo II rules to accommodate winter events. Greg Kierstead said that no changes would be considered for Summer events, but we have been invited to send in a proposal for rules for a Winter Solo II. There was a brief

Nominating Committee discussion regarding issues to be decided including whether to use Solo II or RallyX rules, insurance implications of the latter, etc.. of their efforts. He is willing to look after the institution of a trophy for their segment of the sport. CASC AGM Ron Woltman advised that all members who could attend this meeting should do so, and if anyone has issues to bring forward they may contact him. Calabogie Race Track Ron Woltman advised that his announcement of an open house on October 25th was premature, as this event was by invitation only, but a regular open house will be held in the spring. Current expectations is that the track will open in mid-2004. Ferrari and Race Car Parade 2004 (2) Ron Woltman gave a summary of the 2003 event and an up-date on the situation so far for 2004. He added that the involvement of MCO would depend on proof of the resolution of the issues involving ownership of the event. MCO 50th Anniversary History Book Ron noted that the book is almost finished, and we are trying hard to have it ready for the Clubs banquet. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 9:15 p.m.. Prepared by John Powell, Secretary, MCO, October 26th 2003, amended October 27th 2003. Tel. 613-835-2910; e-mail mgb296@hotmail.com.

Part 1: Rally Radio Why?

by Craig Hamm Way back in 1987 I worked my first performance rally, the Dartmouth Highlands Rally. The event took cars through the logging and country roads of rural Nova Scotia. It was a National event at the time and drew several top teams of the day, including the legendary John Buffum, who I believe was driving an Audi Quattro. John is still winning rallies! Well, anyway, one thing I remembered was the amateur radio people, also known as Ham radio, working at the event. Their function was vital to the backbone of the event as a communications provider. Even though cell phones hadnt really been in mass usage at that time, the same holds true today. Out in rally country there is little to no cell coverage, and satellite phones are expensive and not common among your average volunteer. The common FRS radios, which require no license, do not have the coverage needed to span distances covered by most rallies. The same holds for CB radio. FRS are used, however, as short-range communication and the Ham frequencies are for wide-area communication. The role of amateur radio at a rally is to enhance the situational awareness and safety of all people involved. Radio operators are strategically placed along the route, whether for performance rally or road rally. For a performance rally, this includes the service area (where cars go to get fixed), main time controls, stage starting and finishing lines, and at numerous traffic controls (TCs), which typically involves a radio operator blocking an access road with his or her own vehicle. To illustrate, in the event of a breach at the closed-road access, this information can instantly be relayed up the chain of command. The stage can be shut down quickly, and cars already on the stage can be waved down at other TCs. Another function of the TC radio operator is to record the passage of each car. It becomes obvious when a car doesnt arrive as expected at later TCs or stage finish. Radio operators can confirm the last known position of the rally team, and necessary action can be taken. Medical help, for example, can be directed more efficiently when the whereabouts of a team can be narrowed down to a road segment of 5 km, as opposed to 22 km. On the other side, as a rallyist working at a performance rally that covers hundreds of square miles in the middle of nowhere, its great to know whos still in the running, who went off or broke down, and if the event is on schedule (except for the Rally of the Tall Pines, which runs notoriously on schedule). I received my amateur radio license, or ticket, in early August 2002. Only two weeks later, my ticket earned me a ride as co-driver in Car 0 at a regional performance event, hosted by the Peterborough Motor Sports Club (PMSC). Car 0 is the car that drives rather 0 makes sure the road is clear and that all volunteers are in place. When Car 0 says the stage is clear, the race starts. Its exciting as hell! With the radio, I could relay the status of the course and this is vital to the safety of the event. That day, as a volunteer, I got to be in a car on a closed road, co-driving, and basically having so much fun it should have been illegal! Good thing I got that radio license! Whats the moral of this story? If you get a radio license, you can get the super cool jobs at performance rallies! While all rally volunteers are indispensable, those with radios are definitely a high priority. Ever since getting my radio license Ive used it many times during MCO road rallies. Whether as organizer, course car or checkpoint worker, being in touch with most other volunteers sure makes the lonely jobs a lot less lonely. It evens means you can get confirmation that your job is done, and close your checkpoint earlier. This gives you more time to get to your next assignment, or return to the finish earlier than planned. Next month, Ill tell you what you need to do to get your amateur radio license, and the costs involved.
