THE DOCUMENT-BASED QUESTION (DBQ) The DBQ was developed to have students work with primary and secondary source material as historians do: analyze, synthesize and create meaning from them. The DBQ gives students a combination of visual and written sources that they must analyze while also using their background knowledge. In addition, students use the tools of a historian to sort, weigh and evaluate the material as they synthesize the sources into an essay about a historical issue. KEY DBQ TIPS 1. Read the question carefully. Make sure you know what it is asking you to do. 2. Write all the facts you can think of about the time period before you read the documents. 3. Briefly summarize each document. 4. Formulate a rough thesis statement that answers the question. 5. Look at your thesis statement and make a chart of documents that support your thesis and ones that oppose it. 6. Try to use at least half of the documents available to you in your essay. 7. Integrate the documents into the body of your essay. Dont start a sentence with Document A says 8. Do not copy large sections of the documents. If you wish to use an idea from a document, paraphrase it and then put (Doc. A) after you paraphrase. 9. The documents should be blended with outside information. Do not just summarize the documents and call it a DBQ answer.
