Rosmarinic acid
1. Description
Rosmarinic acid is natural occurring polyphenolic compound consisting of an ester of caffeic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid. It is commonly found in several taxonomically non-related families like Boraginaceae, Blechnaceae and Nepetoideae. Many biological functions of rosmarinic acid are discussed e.g. antioxidative, antiinflammatory, antimutagen, antibacterial and antiviral activities. Recent studies shows that endothelial cells pretreated with rosmarinic acid are insensitive to H2O2 induced interleukin-8 and VEGF mediated angiogenic processes. Additionally, rosmarinic acid prevents amyloid--peptide induced neurotoxicity by reduction of reactive oxygen formation and inhibits the formation of fibrils of amyloid- peptides and destabilized preformed fibrils in vitro. Rosmarinic acid inhibits Fyn tyrosine kinase activity (IC50 1.3 M) in a mixed mechanism and induces apoptosis in T-cells through the mitochondrial pathway in an Lck kinasedependent manner.
