Types of Fasts
Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning a fast if you have any type of medical condition. Pregnant & nursing women | sick & elderly people | young kids - should not fast necessary nutrition/meals. The Full Fast Drink only liquids - mostly water. Make up (in your own heart after seeking Gods will) how you would want to approach this type of fast. (some recommend including clear broth and/or freshly juiced fruits and vegetables to maintain your strength, while others feel led to drink only water). The Daniel Fast The most frequently used example of a partial fast is found in Daniel chapter 10. The Daniel Fast is a fast from meats, sweets, breads and any drink except for water. (See below for a list of foods). The Partial Fast involves abstaining from just certain foods. You can live on just certain foods during the duration of this fast (such as bread and water), or you may choose to fast a certain meal each day. The hours that you sleep should not be considered part of your fasting. The Media Fast involves setting aside television, radio, newspapers, social media (facebook/twitter) and other forms of entertainment to seek the Lord.
Common Questions
I ate something that wasnt on my fast; do I need to start again? No, think of fasting as a marathon rather than a sprint. Dont give up! If you fall down, get up and keep trying. Conquering your stomach is difficult but youll make it! Do I continue exercising while fasting? For most people, moderate exercise is ok. If you are on a complete fast you will not have the energy for exercise. What about kids & students? They are encouraged to fast media, music, tv, movies, social media ... a favorite dessert, snack ... junk food. Growing children should not be fasting their meals. Instead be aware of making healthy choices, saying no to treats and encouraged to have Bible time, devotions ... journaling etc. What if I have a manual labor job? If you have a job that requires you to expend a lot of physical or mental energy, you may want to consider a full fast only when you are not at work and commit to a partial fast that allows you to receive enough nutrition to perform your job. We encourage you to seek God about your commitment and follow His lead. The other extreme is NOT denying your flesh because you are taking the easy way out. Any special advice while I fast? Dress warmly - you can expect to feel colder during a fast, especially in your hands and feet. Use warm, not hot, water for showers and baths. Avoid ice cold beverages. You will experience weakness (don't be alarmed!). Fast in secret - don't tell others you are fasting; it is between you and the Lord. What could I expect while fasting? Possible side effects vary with different individuals. Most of the more severe side effects are experienced in water only fasts. Here are a few symptoms some have experienced: headache, nausea, low fever, sleeplessness, stomach pains, feelings of loneliness, and thoughts of doubt and unbelief. It is all part of subduing the flesh. If new to fasting, its important that you walk through it with others to guarantee success. How should I behave during my fast? Jesus said in Matthew 6:16 (TMNT) When you practice some appetite-denying discipline to better concentrate on God, don't make a production out of it. It might turn you into a small-time celebrity but it won't make you a
saint. If you 'go into training' inwardly, act normal outwardly. Shampoo and comb your hair, brush your teeth, wash your face. God doesn't require attention-getting devices. He won't overlook what you are doing; he'll reward you well.

Homemade Dijon Mustard: Ingredients: 2 cups dry white wine vinegar 1 cup finely chopped onions 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 4 ounces dry mustard 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 teaspoons salt Few drops Tabasco Directions: Combine vinegar, onion and garlic. Heat to boiling and simmer for five minutes. Pour into medium bowl to cool. Add dry mustard to a small sauce pan. Now pour the vinegar mixture through a strainer into the saucepan, whisking until very smooth. Heat slowly, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Allow to cool and then pour into non-metallic covered container. For best results, chill at last two days before using. This mixture will stay fresh in the refrigerator for several weeks. After the fast you can add honey as a sweetener.
In place of morning eggs: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium onion, sliced 1/2 green pepper, chopped 1 cup firm tofu, diced in bite-sized pieces garlic salt to taste Italian herbs to taste Directions: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add oil and heat for a couple minutes. Add the onions and green peppers and stir fry for 2-3 minutes. Add tofu, garlic salt and Italian herbs. Continue to cook until vegetables are soft. Makes two servings. The tofu is about the same consistency as egg whites and it soaks up the flavors of whatever its being cooked with. Very easy, tastes great, and lot of protein.
