Dr. CHANDRA SEKHAR, Ph.D.

Associate Professor, Department of Building National University of Singapore

ABOUT ASHRAE : ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers , an individual membership society, is an international organization operated for the exclusive purpose of advancing the arts and sciences of HVAC&R to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. ASHRAE is a worldwide body of 55,000 HVAC professionals with dissemination of knowledge as one of the main objectives. Membership in ASHRAE allows access to information about state of the art HVAC&R Technology and provides many oppurtunities to participate in the development of technology. For more information on ASHRAE visit www.ashrae.org. ASHRAE Chennai Chapter, the second in the South India was started this year and works to accomplish to fulll the goals of ASHRAE, USA .It conducts seminars, bi-monthly Technical Talks in the eld of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration. ABOUT ISHRAE : ISHRAE (The Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers) was founded in 1981 at New Delhi by a group of eminent HVAC&R professionals. ISHRAE has more than 8000 members in 34 chapters and over 3000 students in 75 student chapters, across India. ISHRAE organizes International and National Expositions, Seminars, Quiz programs, Paper Presentations, Training and Workshops to achieve its primary objective of furthering the Arts and Sciences of HVAC&R. ISHRAE publishes handbooks, technical guides, a quarterly journal, operates a web portal and develops software for the HVAC&R industry. ISHRAE is harmonising industry standards, publishing a new set of Indian weather data and is closely working with the Government of India in the area of energy conservation. Membership of ISHRAE is open to individuals from the HVAC&R and allied industries. ISHRAE is an afliate Society of ASHRAE. For more information on ISHRAE visit www.ishrae.in. The Chennai Chapter was founded in 1989. Since then the Chapter has successfully conducted many seminars on a variety of subjects. The chapter operates from its own premises fully equipped with a training centre. SEMINAR BACKGROUND : Ventilation, IAQ and Energy issues in hot humid climates Past, Present and Future This talk will provide an overview of the ventilation, IAQ and energy issues in commercial ofce buildings in hot humid climates. It presents the design challenges based on climatic differences with due consideration given to local codes and ASHRAE Standards 55, 62.1 and 90.1. Typical HVAC design for different building types in hot humid climates will be covered with emphasis on both design and part load characteristics. The role and importance of cooling and dehumidifying coil and limitations in conventional designs will be highlighted. Effective and practical zone-level ventilation control will be introduced and the notion of energy efcient healthy buildings will be presented. Decoupled ventilation strategies for enhanced IAQ Demand cooling and Demand ventilation The concept of decoupling ventilation air from supply air is fast emerging as an ideal solution to combat the problems associated with poor indoor air quality (IAQ). This talk will present the Personalised Ventilation (PV) system and the Single Coil Twin Fan (SCTF) system, which show considerable promise in their abilities to provide both good IAQ and energy efciency. The PV system is fundamentally aimed at improving ventilation in the immediate breathing zones of occupants in the built environment. The SCTF system is a new air-conditioning and air distribution system that improves occupants thermal comfort and indoor air quality whilst signicantly saving energy. It provides demand ventilation and demand cooling by dynamically responding to the varying requirements in the individual occupied zones of a building.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER : Dr Chandra Sekhar is currently an Associate Professor and Programme Director (M.Sc Building Performance and Sustainability) and Co-Programme Director (Integrated Sustainable Design) in the Department of Building at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also a Founding Director of Enhanced Air Quality Pte Ltd., a NUS Spin-off Company incorporated in June 2004, arising out of his research in the elds of indoor air quality (IAQ) and Energy. He has been an IAQ consultant in Singapore since 1993. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Adelaide, Australia, and continued as a postdoctoral fellow at the same university until 1991 where he worked towards the continued development of energy efcient cooling and dehumidication systems. In 1992, he joined NUS as a Faculty and has since been teaching and conducting research in the areas of ventilation and indoor air quality, air-conditioning and ventilation systems, building energy analysis and has published about 180 papers in these areas in several international journals and conferences.
