1st International DelPHE Conference on Construction Management in Developing Countries: Education, Training, Research and Practice
Khartoum, Sudan, 10th-13th March 2013

The construction industry everywhere, given its special problems and requirements, faces problems and challenges. Developing countries are faced with challenges, which are different in nature and context than those of developed countries are notoriously characterized by weak and unstable socio-economic performance attributed, inter alia, to extended urbanization, wars and conflicts, and environmental depletion. The UN asserted that sub-Saharan Africa remains the region with the highest prevalence of slums.

She represented South Africa in the Earth Charter drafting and consultation process and has acted as expert advisor to organisations such as the United Nation Environment Programme and the Clinton Climate Positive Development Programme. Chrisna was recently appointed Coordinator of the CIB Priority Theme Sustainable Construction. Prof. Amira Omer Siddig Osman is an associate professor in architecture at the University of Johannesburg. Prior to that she worked as a Senior Researcher at CSIR in Pretoria, South Africa. She finished her Masters in Architecture at the University of Khartoum in Sudan in 1996 and her PhD in Architecture at the University of Pretoria in 2004. Amira taught in various institutions. She also worked as an architect in Khartoum and as a United Nation Volunteer UNV in Maseru, Lesotho. Her research focus areas are housing and human settlements, Open Building, informal settlements and governmentsubsidized social rental housing. Amira believes that the architectural profession has a critical role to play in the achievement of human settlements that are more equitable, more beautiful and more functional human settlements that increase opportunities, offering people a better chance at improving their lives and livelihoods. Keynote Speakers
Chrisna has been Coordinator of a CIB Commission on Urban Sustainability and was the main author of the joint CIB/UNEP Agenda on Sustainable Construction in Developing Countries. Chrisna has more than 20 years experience in sustainable human settlement development, both as practitioner and as researcher. Internationally, Chrisna has been a member of a number of working groups on sustainable construction and urban sustainability, and

and social expertise towards these aims is the driving force behind Amiras research projects and in her professional roles. Amira is Coordinator of CIB Commission W110 Informal Settlement and Affordable Housing.

Conference Themes
The main theme of the conference is Construction Management in Developing Countries: Education, Training, Research and Practice. The sub-themes of the conference include: Construction industry in developing countries; role of women in the construction industry; the construction industry in areas of conflicts and crisis; Construction Management Education; Management of mega Projects; Human resources in construction; Community participation in construction; Sustainable Social Housing Best practices in education, research and training related to the CI in developing countries.

Registration Fees
The full registration fee for this conference is: SDG 500, or USD 200, or 150 Euros. Conference fees include welcome reception, bag, badge, conference abstracts booklet/CD; Conference Proceedings, snacks and refreshments, and gala dinner. A 25% discount on the full registration fee is offered to authors of accepted papers and to graduate students. CIB Members are offered a 10 % discount.

Submission of Papers
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit research papers and insightful case studies on any of the above-listed themes for presentation in the conference. Papers will be peer reviewed by a panel of international scholars and experts and will be published in the Conference Proceedings. Many paper covering different themes of the event have been accepted for publication. The papers come from different countries including (Sudan, UK, USA, Russia, Ireland, and Nigeria). We believe that this diversification will add to the value of the conference given that it is the first of its type in the Sudan. In addition to the received papers, there will be a couple of keynote speakers from Sudan and the UK as well as movies related to the themes of the conference. The conference will feature a Poster Session to provide postgraduate students and researchers with the opportunity of illustrating their research topics, ideas, and progress.
