From 1913 until his death in 1917, Evgenii Bauer made 80 films, 20 of which survived. Along with Griffith, and perhaps Dziga Vertov, the great discoverer of montage. 3 Its satire still fresh. 4 Anticipates Bresson in its pared down ascetic poetry. 5 Clumsily moving toward Godardian collision of reality and illusion. See Roud, 566. 6 One of the first to grasp the new logic of space implied by cinema. Contrast LHerbier who focussed on developing new techniques. Concerned with collapsing gap between avant-garde and politics. 7 Apparently, largely written out of film history no reference to him in Roud. He seems to have produced satirical films which were realistic in their depiction of how little had changed after the Russian revolution.
