Issue N 2/2013
Its not surprising that governments from Singapore to Sao Paolo are racing to teach innovation. China too has started championing this premise; recognizing that long-term, being cheapest may carry too high a price. But can innovation be imposed? Can creativity be taught in classrooms? Can economies built on perspiration shift to being fuelled by inspiration? This is where I see the vital role of the museum. For 2,000 years museums have held an exalted place in society, built on the belief that through objects, they tell the history of how humans shape the world and have been shaped by it. In 2012, just over half of youth in the UK attended a museum or public gallery thats more than go to football matches. The same is true in France. But how can museums stay true to the educational premise on which they were conceived - in the face of tighter budgets and global recession? How can they teach record numbers of people philosophy, history, literature and art, in a way that leads to a greater understanding of the world? The answer lies in partnerships with entrepreneurs and industry to forge cocollaborative models and prototypes, like those emerging in the sciences and maths. The spiraling cost of education has driven universities and visionary educators to pioneer massive open online courses such as in the past 12 months, Udacity and Ed-X have been accessed by over a million students. And since its launch five years ago Khan Academy delivered over 200 million lessons. So why cant the pillars of arts education be similarly reconstructed? Read the full article: http://business.blogs.cnn.com/2013/01/24/ how-museums-can-transform-the-art-oflearning/

> EDITORIAL: How museums can transform the art of learning

Is 20% youth unemployment in the western world inevitable? Will generations of young workers be condemned to precarious work conditions in developed economies, or persistent poverty in the emerging ones? This doesnt have to be the new reality. If we consider that just as the knowledge economy defined the 20th century, the creative economy will dominate the next. We must accept that in a world where traditional skills and labor will be outsourced and automated, logic will take us from a to b, but creativity will take us everywhere. The lure of visual culture is pervasive fuelling phenomena like Facebook, Instagram, Vice Media and the like. But the state of culturebased education is in crisis. The arts are being carved out from curricula, at the very time... When creative industries are growing at a faster rate than the world economy. When the rate of joblessness in Americas creative sphere is half of what it is for other professions. When music, fashion and design in Britain, so brilliantly showcased at the Olympics, employs more people than its financial sector. To stimulate innovation, we must re-invent the way we study humanities. And to achieve that, museums must be put in the picture, not just in the frame, such as: 1. That creativity will be a survival skill of the future; 2. That the props and people within museums are essential resources for learning; and 3. That by embracing technology and forging innovative partnerships, museums will become the fiery muses that set the worlds innovation alight, and not the mausoleums where art just goes to die. You may already buy into the first idea, given widespread data from urban theorists like Richard Florida, confirming that culture brings economic benefit in very measur-able ways.

GREECE
4th Kufstein Summer School for Arts Management 2013 Do We Need New Cultural Identities? Strategies of Cultural Management for Representation and Cooperation of Art Institutions and Artists across Europe 12 18 May 2013 | Palea Epidavros | Greece Almost every European country has its own cultural institute like the Goethe Institut (Germany), Instituto Cervantes (Spain), British Council (UK), Institute Francais (France), Finnland-Institut (Germany) sterreich Institut (Austria), etc. as well as several foundations and associations focusing on international cultural transfers. These institutes are very important for creating a European cultural network. Nonetheless, in this context it is very difficult to define what kind of national cultural understanding should be presented and what the precise differences within these European measurements to improve artistic exchanges are. Therefore the 4th Kufstein Summer School for Arts Management will focus on the question whether we have to reflect a conceivable end of national cultural identities to strengthen a special European approach or whether we have to reformulate the tasks of national cultural institutions and artistic projects to understand the value of national experiences, traditions and approaches in a new way. The Summer School will gather experts from European and nonEuropean countries as well as artists, politicians, arts managers and students from different fields to discuss this topic on a theoretical as well as practical level. An important feature of the Summer School will be workshops with active involvement of the participants. Target Groups of the Summer School are graduate students of arts management, cultural studies, event management, tourism management, political sciences and cultural heritage management. Interested students and professionals of other fields are also welcome. Every participant receives a certificate of attendance. The language adopted will be English. Also it is provided 490.00 fee which includes conference fee, papers, accommodation (shared rooms), breakfast, dinner, travel costs during seminar, entrance fees (excl. travelling expenses for arrival and departure, optional excursions). Deadline for application is 31 March 2013. Fore more detailed information please contact Ms. Angela Scalet, Project Management Summer School, at summerschool@fhkufstein.ac.at or consult the programme at http://www.fh-kufstein.ac.at/ Veranstaltungen/4th-Kufstein-Summer-Schoolfor-Arts-Management-2013
