TVM 4125 Water and wastewater technology basic course, spring 2013

Exercise 1: Report from study trip to water supply constructions

Deadline 12 February 13:00 (group based)
The trip took place Friday 25 January and went to Jonsvatnet lake (water reservoir for Trondheim), the intake facility, the drinking water treatment plant VIVA, the Jakobsli pumping station and Steinan reservoir. 1. Write a report from the study trip. It shall include a description of the functionality of each of the stations visited and observed issues. Include photos that you evt. have taken at the excursion. Discuss about installations that you saw at the stations we visited. 2. In 1997 the water intake was moved from 23 meters under surface to 50 meters under surface. What is the advantage of this? 3. Find degree of utilization of lake Jonsvatnet in Trondheim in 2001 (see data sheet below) 4. Trondheim kommune plans to lift the outlet dam by 25 cm. What will be the corresponding increase of magasine volume in Jonsvatnet. 5. The flow into river Vikelva is regulated by a rectangular weir that has its base at 149.20 m.a.s.l. The length is 8,4 meters. Above 149.80 the length is 10,6 meters. Show the overflow versus water level. What is the flow when level in Jonsvatnet is 149.35 m.a.s.l. 6. Out of the total utilization of water from Jonsvatnet, Trondheim takes 21 mill m3/year and Malvik 1,0 mill m3/year. Calculate average water consumption in Trondheim pr. 2013 (200000 inhabitants) in l/p*d and distribute it into domestic, industry+other and leakages, making your own assumptions 7. Draw a summation curve for water consumption on a yearly basis (see table below) 8. The transfer of water from intake to VIVA is by gravity in a rock tunnel. This is to be replaced by a pipe, indicatively made by concrete. Calculate the diameter when maximum head loss is 5m. (additional information given below, add your own criteria). What is the necessary diameter if the pipe is by steel coved by cement mortar lining or GRP (glass reinforced plastic)? Hint: For using the Moodys diagram, find an indicative diameter from the Colebrook nomogram. 9. Further transfer of water from VIVA to Fortuna is also in a rock tunnel. Due to risk of infiltration from surface, and the desire to open up this area for building, it will be replaced by a pipe. Design this pipe for the same materials as in task 1, but without water supply to Malvik and its corresponding industrial and other uses (estimated to 30.000 persons in 2055). 10. Calculate incoming pressure level to Jakobsli pumping station using the assumptions given above 11. From Jakobsli pumping station water is distributed by gravity towards city center and by pumping to city south (Steinan reservoir and Kolstad pumping station). The pumped water is delivered by two equal pumps (on extra pump is in reserve). Select pipe material and define pipe characteristic. What is necessary capacity of each of the pumps? 12. Volume of Steinan reservoir is 11000 m3 in each of two chambers. Additional volume in other reservoirs is 68.000 m3. The total volume stored in the reservoirs is meant to serve the entire city in case of upstream failure. How long time can this water volume provide the city with water supply to-day (200000 persons + equal amount for industry and other) and in with 250 000 inhabitants in 2055? 13. What is being done to improve the safety and reliability of water supply to inhabitants of Trondheim?

Rectangular weir (Kindswater-Carter, ISO1438/1 1980) , task 5: Q = k* 2/3 * b*

K = weir coefficient (dependent on size of weir compared to width and depth of lake, use 0.6 here), b = width, h = level above threshold Data for water transfer system (task 6-12): Jonsvatnet is 149.20 m.a.s.l (HRV is 149.35). Length of tunnel from Jonsvatnet to VIVA is ca. 3700 m (3x4 m2). At VIVA water is lifted to 150 m.a.s.l From VIVA water is transported in a 1100 m rock tunnel to Fortuna (3x4 m2). Mean water flow in this is ca. 750 l/s and water level at Fortuna is 150 m.a.s.l. From Fortuna to Jakobsli pumping station is a 1200 mm pipe, length 1200 m. Level of pumps at Jakobsli is 135 m.a.s.l. From Jakobsli ca. 25000 m3/d is pumped to Steinan reservoir via two parallel pipes, one 600 mm cast iron of 3300 m and one and 800 mm concrete pipe of 2700 m. Water level in reservoir is + 192.5 m.a.s.l Roughness values: Concrete 1,0 mm, cement mortar lining 0,5 mm and GRP 0,2 mm Operation curves of pumps at Jakobsli
