the school in the coming months. Students also share some concern regarding the recent shootings. Its always possible to increase security levels at our school, senior Luke Wagner mentions, but it will be very difficult to prevent a gunman from shooting an entrance into our school. Cities such as Los Angeles and Phoenix are actually sending armed guards to patrol the schools. Schools in Marlboro and Totowa, New Jersey are also providing

by Daniel Hakakian After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, many schools are reconsidering their security measures as an attempt to make their schools a safer learning environment. Sandy Hook Elementary School principal Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung had only just recently installed a new security system before the shooting. No entry into the school was allowed after 9:30 a.m. unless the visitor was visibly identified and was buzzed in. Since the doors were locked, gunman Adam Lanza shot an entrance into the building himself. West Morris Regional High School District superintendent Mackey Pendergrast recently released a letter to ease the tensions of faculty, students, and parents regarding security at the schools. In the last three years we have conducted over two dozen indistrict workshops addressing student anxiety, depression, substance abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, and suicide ideation, among other related issues, Pendergrast remarks. Moreover, many faculty members have attended over 30 out-of-district workshops on the same topics. The administration is also working with the Morris County Prosecutors Office, the Department of Education, and the local police in order to heighten awareness and refine security procedures. Assistant principal Dr. William Carpluk notes many security advantages that our school has, such as a police officer on campus that works closely with the administration, monthly security drills, and the electronic door locks and video cameras. During the day, visitors need to be buzzed into the school after being viewed by the video cameras. The school is proactive and vigilant in reviewing the safety and security protocols, as an expert in school security will be conducting a security audit on Many schools are not only responding to the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting, but also to the foiled school bomb plot in Alabama on January 4th and the school shooting in California on January 10th. Derek Shrout from Russel County High School planned to kill six students and one teacher with homemade grenades. A teacher found his journal with the bomb plot plans outlined in it and immediately contacted authorities. Students in Taft High School in California were not as lucky. Bryan Oliver injured two people with his 12gauge shotgun before his teacher Ryan Heber convinced him to put the gun down. Victims Jacob Nichols and Bowe Cleveland are showing signs of recovery. The armed police officer was supposed to be present in Taft High School that day, but heavy snow prevented him from getting to the school. San Diego State University recently hosted an Active Shooter Response training course in which police officers and school officials learned how to deal with a shooter in the area. The instructors simulated a school shooting using an airsoft gun while other assistants acted as frightened students. Safety instructor Kelly Harris remarked, We tell people they should flee if they can, hide if they must and fight back if there is no other option. Next year, all incoming freshman students at San Diego State University will undergo a 90-minute lecture on surviving a school shooting. Much like many other universities, San Diego State also has a social media method of informing students of a shooter on campus by sending the students text messages and emails. It is possible to be as prepared as you can be for certain situations, Carpluk remarks; however, should a situation occur, it would be nave to think that nobody could get hurt.

armed guards and police officers to secure the school. Many criticize these methods of security and believe that they are unnecessary. "At least during a 90-day period, temporarily, as we sit down and look - and there's a good debate in the community about what it is that we want to do and not do - but while we're doing that, let's make sure that our schools are as safe and secure as we possibly can, given what's happened," responds Marlboro Schools superintendent David Abbott.

Flu epidemic plagues Mendham

Dont worry, weve got your horoscopes ready to reveal your future. Will it be positive? Of course it will. But look for value too! (Page 10)
by Kirsten Eversen This years flu proves to be one of the worst in years, sending flocks of students home sick and impacting the daily routine of students and faculty. The seemingly sudden flu began in late December and has since swept the nation, leading to nearly 30 deaths this season. The flu hit a month earlier than normal, and so far 47 states have experienced the widespread flu outbreak. Health officials remain unsure if the worst has passed or is yet to come. The 2012-2013 vaccine includes many of the circulating viruses, but the CDC reports its effectiveness to be only 62 percent. Doctors recommend receiving the shot because it will best defend against the strains. On January 17th, the FDA approved an egg-free flu virus vaccine which will open up the opportunity for vaccination for those with an egg allergy. The new vaccine no longer depends on chicken eggs to grow and develop the flu virus, but instead will employ caterpillar cells to cultivate the disease for immunization use. Mendham school nurse Linda Esposito observed a greater influx of sick students to the nurses office this year compared to last year. Last years strains were very mild, Esposito explains, but this year, there seems to be a two week period where everyone is getting sick. The stomach virus and cold virus are also infecting students this year; however, the symptoms of the flu differ from these viruses. While a cold entails congestion and a sore throat, fever, chills, and body aches characterize the flu. There is so much going around this year that it is very easy for someone to self-diagnose himself with the flu at the slightest symptom because of all the publicity the virus has received. Esposito clarifies, The best bet is to be examined by a doctor. Students afflicted with the flu find it difficult to focus on school work, but come to school anyway fearing the makeup work they would have to complete. This makes faculty and peers more susceptible to becoming infected by the disease and being unable to teach and learn efficiently. When students are sick, it is very hard for them to focus on the material being taught, math teacher Shira Brown comments. Teachers who also become sick may have to adjust lesson plans in order to cope. Students are advised to use the defense resources available at the school such as the Purell hand sanitizers located in many hallways and classrooms. Avoiding people who are infected can be difficult in a school setting, particularly with assigned seating and congested hallways. Politely declining to share writing utensils, calculators, textbooks, and phones, however, would decrease the spread of germs and the chance to come into contact with the flu virus.

Patriotism in the United States

Teens unaware of news

by Daniel Hakakian Although teens have so many methods of accessing news, many remain unaware of pertinent news, common history, and basic finance. In this dynamic world that we live in, it is very important for teens to know current events, even if they will not directly influence their ways of life. Some surveys indicate that teenagers were unaware of the candidates running for the 2012 presidential election. In addition, many are uninformed about international news such as the situations in the Middle East and even national news such as the United States deficit. Although these issues may not affect todays youth, they can determine what they will face in the future. ABC news also reports a study regarding teens and their knowledge of July 4th. For 14 percent of U.S. teens, the Fourth of July will mark the historic day we declared independence from France. About five percent believe the United States gained independence from Canada on July 4, 1776. Another 15 percent did not even know that the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, while 17 percent were unaware of the 13 original colonies. Head of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Colin Campbell (who conducted the study), estimated that more than 5 million teenagers dont understand the true meaning of independence day. In addition, 19 percent of the teens tested could only name two branches of the government, only executive and judicial, and 31 percent did not know the author of The Star-Spangled Banner (Francis Scott Key). With college only eight months away for seniors, it is vital for them to understand how to regulate their money. As college debt continuously rises, students must learn to minimize their personal debt. According to an ING Direct study, about 87 percent of teens do not know how to manage their money, but 35 percent want to learn how to save. Recently, it has become mandatory for students in many schools, including ours, to pass one semester of financial literacy in order to graduate. The New Jersey Department of Education now requires two and a half credits in either financial, economic, business, or entrepreneurial literacy beginning with the class of 2014. However, as helpful as the class is, a teens monetary habits are directly influenced by their parents.

by Reid Petty In the age of information and ever-advancing technology, common resources used by generations are becoming outdated and maintaining a steady decline towards extinction. What is a book? What is a library? It seems these questions are being asked more and more when technological advancements have increasing accessibility to society as a whole and are replacing commonplace resources supplied by the government. For years, computers and even phones were restricted to the upper class who could afford such expenditures. But now that factors of production are cheaper than in the past, this equipment is becoming less scarce and more accessible to the public. Consider how machinery, which individuals use and take for granted, have replaced outdated materials and created a fast paced and industrialized world. HD television sets, expanding social media outlets, iPhones, all contribute to an increasingly advanced world. And in this world, what often seems either vintage or retro suffers the consequences. When a student is assigned a research project, what does he do? Does he head straight to the library? No, he cracks open his laptop and Googles the topic of his assignment. What students across the United States fail to recognize is the outlet that is available to them in their local area public libraries. The first tax supported public library was instituted in 1833 in New Hampshire. A public library supplies services to the general public and typically makes its books available for loaning. Usually, libraries issue cards to community members wanting to borrow books. Many libraries also serve as locations for community organizations in which they offer free services and events to the public. (cont. on pg. 3)

by Kirsten Eversen Patriotism, an intangible, hazy concept generally associated with senior citizens, seems to be incomprehensible to the younger generation. Every morning, students around the nation rise from their seats to place their hands over their hearts to pledge their allegiance to the United States of America. Most can recite the pledge in their sleep, having it been mindlessly ingrained in their brains since preschool. Though, how many of these students truly believe or even understand what they are saying? Taking the Pledge of Allegiance every day demonstrates ones loyalty to the nation, but it goes beyond that now. It demonstrates belief in the nation and its values. Perhaps disapproval of the country leads to the lethargic droning every morning. Or maybe the lack of enthusiasm simply results from overworked, tired teenagers who find it too challenging to get up from their seats for 30 seconds. Either way, the trend cites a decreasing patriotism among young people. Patriotic acts or duties have always held a cornerstone role in the foundation of the United States. Without the pride of its people, the United States would not have won its Revolutionary War or enlisted so many people after Pearl Harbor. These historical

acts live as testament to what is conceived to be patriotism. Yet, American flags no longer adorn the front lawn of every house and the Fourth of July seems to be no more than a fireworks celebration. Americans do not prioritize love for their country anymore. In fact, they hardly seem to care at all until an unavoidable atrocity occurs, threatening their comfortable Americanized lifestyle. While the undeniable sacrifice of military personal proves patriotism exists, the general public does not think of the country first. Though, if patriotism were really dying, the nation would not have united post-September 11th and the death of Bin Laden would not have sent so many people, notably a majority of college students, flooding the streets in celebration. Perhaps patriotism still exists in the hearts and minds of the American people, but selective flaunting of ones pride occurs only after tragedies. Common places and names allude to the idea of patriotism, specifically in the Mendham-Chester region known for its historical role in the transportation of George Washingtons troops. Patriots Path in Chester, Mendham High Schools mascot, even this school newspaper, The Patriot, all refer to the patriotic roots of the area, yet no one really takes the time to think about it. With the inauguration finished and an election year behind, Americans begin to place a greater emphasis on the future of the nation. Not until something bad happens do the American people express just how proud they are to be Americans. And with the younger generation following suit, it appears inevitable that patriotism will continue to go undervalued.

To advise or to prevent? Censorship abounds

by Reid Petty The role of parental advisory in both musical and visual mediums of entertainment have aided parents for years in the rearing of their children, but is there still a role for blatant warnings and blocked content in a society where nothing is provocative? Oftentimes a label on some part of an album cover reads Parent Advisory: Explicit Content. This is a warning by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to audio and recordings in the United States containing excessive use of profane language and/or sexual references. These warnings give heed to consumers that the content of the enclosed music may not be appropriate for younger individuals or even those with sensitive dispositions when it comes to explicit content. Similarly, the film industry employs a method of ratings to ensure that only individuals of certain age, or accompanied with consenting parents, may view a motion picture. These ratings come in the form of letters (G, PG, PG-13, etc...). The RIAAs use of labels does give warning as to the content enclosed, but it does not restrict the purchasing power of the consumer, thereby not infringing on some of the basic rights of American citizens. The labels are certainly helpful to those who are wary of music which might instill unfavorable side effects on children of a younger age. The information may aid parents, but the real issue is censorship in the film industry. The rating system, in essence, does not allow every individual to seek desired information. Censorship is defined as the suppression of speech or other public communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient as determined by a government, media outlet, or other controlling body. It occurs in a variety of different contexts including speech, books, music, films and other arts, the press, radio, television, and the Internet. Is not the rejection of persons from viewing an artistic enterprise a form of censorship? Absolutely it is. The government is restricting information to those deemed worthy, not to all who request it. Often debated (cont. on pg. 3)

by Rachel Pire Every day, students of Mendham High School produce a generous amount of trash. With at least 10 garbage cans and recycle bins throughout every hallway in this building, the amount of garbage left on the ground for someone else to pick up is astonishing. Students often fail to stop and consider the men and women who work behind the scenes to keep this school running, and how unfair it is to pile our own -- unnecessary -- personal mess to the list of things they need to do. At the sound of the last bell, kids make a mad dash to get to their cars, buses, afterschool activities, etc. In the chaos that ensues, no one takes the time to notice the half-eaten apples or crumpled pieces of paper they leave littering the school; students assume the custodial staff will clean it up. I am just curious to know why they would do that. Is it to spite us? Do they simply not realize that its disrespectful? says head of maintenance Silvio Sinerco. What people dont realize is that with so responsibilities, the custodial staff should not have to pick up garbage that students are supposed to have thrown out themselves. We are expected to clean up after ourselves at home, so why should school be any different? Im not talking about spilled drinks those messes are understandable, says Sinerco. Moreover, students dont have the mindset for recycling. Constantly, Sinerco has had to pull plastic bottles and cans out of the garbage can and put them into the recycling bin, even though the two containers are right next to each other. When students dont recycle, the trash contractor is forced to sort everything himself; it gives Mendham a bad reputation for recycling. Every day, students arrive at a school transformed from the disordered clutter of yesterday into a newly cleaned, immaculate building. Naturally, this transformation does not happen by itself. In addition to their work during the day, the custodial staff is here until 11:00 pm making sure the school is ready for the next day. During the school day, they are always there to help a student with a jammed locker, or to help fix a leak in the ceiling. Whatever a faculty member or student needs, the custodial staff gets right on the job. The time between the bells right after lunch are also made more stressful by the excess trash left by students. Custodians already have to rush to put away the tables and mats in the small gym as well as clean the lobby and hallways before the next class starts. They are put under more pressure when students dont clean up after themselves, as well as put off their own lunch break by taking more time to clean up after ours. It is important to appreciate all the hard work that Sinerco and the custodial staff put in to keeping the school a clean and safe environment for kids

Technology (cont. from 2)

However, one must ask the question, are libraries necessary or prevalent anymore? Yes, they provide a valuable opportunity for people to borrow books free of charge, but with the growing uses of the internet and availability of books for cheap prices online, libraries are becoming endangered. Anyone who owns an iPad or tablet of some sort can purchase a book and retain that book forever. There is no need to move or go to a library when one can simply search the web and find information or purchase a necessary material right from the comfort of their homes. Across America, libraries are being closed more frequently exactly because of this point. Why would the government continue its sponsorship of libraries when they could cut all funding and use that money for other, more pressing situations? A notable case of possible closure was the role of the John Steinbeck Library in raising awareness of libraries as a dying breed and tradition. John Steinbeck was a noted American author who wrote such profound works as Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. The library named after his significance to American literature was on the verge of closing in 2005 when the nationally publicized coverage and subsequent gathering of individuals from across the country prevented its closure. This example proves that no public library is safe from forced expiration. Technology has created a drastic change in the lifestyles of most every human. Connectivity, accessibility, and livelihood are all based around the internet and further advancements. Personal interaction is fading in a world where Skype and ooVoo can replace face to face discussion. Similarly, technology degrades Americas fundamental resources that have been provided for centuries. Though libraries suffer as a result of technology, it is important that citizens of the United States recognize their value and cultural significance. Libraries may not be in style, but they are a place to find books free of charge, organize community events, and provide for future generations of this nation. Technology is easy, but one must recognize the necessity of retaining these public institutions, if anything but to maintain some sense of historical importance.

by Liberty Mason-Sharma Across the nation, students who are labeled as gifted or talented face increasing pressures to perform at an unrealistically high academic level. Every student knows that gifted and talented programs in schools are designed to expedite the learning process for those who demonstrate a superior rate of learning and comprehension; however, coordinators of such programs and parents of gifted students often mistake childrens aptitude for absorbing knowledge as something more. Although students may learn quickly, it does not necessarily follow that they are smarter than other kids. Intelligence is based on factors other than fact retention and memorization. Students in gifted and talented programs may not live up to their potential and struggle to meet the high expectations set for them by coordinators, parents, and society as a whole. Just because a student can divide exponents in third grade, he should not be treated as though he will, of his own accord, become a rocket scientist. Every child, no matter how in-

Popular education myths lead to unrealistic expectations

telligent, requires a learning environment in which, he is constantly challenged. CNN contributor, Carolyn Coil points out the falsity. Gifted kids will get by on their own without any special help from the school. Students should neither be punished nor put at a disadvantage simply because they hold a talent. Schools should recognize and appreciate students aptitude for learning. This being said, students should not be overly challenged either. Coil introduces the myth that, It never hurts gifted students to teach others what they already know. Despite popular belief, gifted students do require time alone to complete homework and assignments. Even though these students are academically beyond their years, it does not follow that they have the extra time or required skills to tutor peers. Also, students should not be left to teach themselves difficult material. This may result in poor study habits and an inability to work collaboratively in later years. As it stands, a large number of gifted and talented programs across the US are not at the standard flourishing students require. The emphasis is not on the individual, and many kids are left to build their own education. The programs do not encourage gifted students to work to their full potential due to either a lack of focus on the cultivation of the students desire to learn or too much pressure on students to help their peers.

to learn. If a friend leaves trash on the lunch table, dont use the Its not mine excuse; its not the custodians trash either yet for some reason they are always the ones who end up cleaning it up. The task of walking three whole steps to the garbage or recycling bin may seem daunting, but next time you miss that shot into the garbage can, take a second to pick it up.

Censorship (cont. from 2)

in this era of technology and information is the apropriateness and effectiveness of such methods. Isnt almost all information available on the internet anyway, legally or otherwise? The aforementioned statement that nothing is provocative relates to the concept that since everything is available via the web, surprises and shocking revelations become hardly new with the incredible access of information. Everyone has seen everything. When a parent attempts to close a door through restrictions in entertainment or otherwise, that child will simply seek other means to reach the desired item. The argument may be made that the government is acting in the best interest of underage individuals. By preventing children from viewing deemed-inappropriate content, demerit goods are being suppressed for the greater welfare of society as a whole. Where these theorists are misguided is that their point of view is completely anachronistic. This is no longer a time where every, tiny detail of childrens lives can be seen under a microscope. With advancing technologies it is becoming easier and easier for those to bend the rules that the government has instilled. Blocking access to certain art forms is not the way the government should proceed. The RIAAs method of warning, not prevention, is exactly what should be employed across all mediums. Parents should adopt the style of parenting where they guide their children through their maturation, not the government. Censorship should be avoided in a time of increasing publicity. Instead, open information should ensue.

7 tips to survive 11 weeks

by Reid Petty As 11 weeks will pass before the students and staff of Mendham High School has a break in 2013, here are some helpful tips to survive this crazy l o n g amount of time. 1. Drink lots of coffee. This may seem obvious to most of the school, but it must be said. Coffee is the fountain of youth and the Holy Grail to those struggling to wake up, finish an assignment, or simply get through the day. Feeling tired? Take a shot of espresso. Have an essay due tomorrow that you havent started? Make that a double shot of espresso. Whatever your problem is, coffee is often the answer. However, be wary of a Starbucks addiction. 2. Sleep as often as you can. Sleep is critical to students, teachers, and administrators alike. It may be the only thing more rejuvenating than that energizing double shot. Be wary of the hustle and bustle of 11 weeks during which you put off sleep for too long. Students might end up seeing more of the walking dead during school hours than on Sunday nights on AMC. 3. Eat food. You might be asking, what does food have to do with 11 weeks of straight school? Well, times often when people are stressed and busy because of their strenuous schedules, they forget to consume the necessary amount of sustenance to get through the day. And then we get the hangries (people who are angry because of hunger). No one likes a sassy individual who needs to attack others because of his inability to monitor his own dietary needs. Take this advice: have a snack bar on you at all times. Otherwise, youll be left with no one to complain to. 4. Get ahead on your work.

Yeah, yeah, working ahead stinks. Just when you think youre done with all your work, SURPRISE, an English paper is due at the end of the week. Do yourself some good and get ahead on your work so when the weekend comes around, you can really let loose. Whats that? Youd rather surf Facebook than do that math homework due in two days? Well guess what? Youre breaking rule number 2. Moral of the story: work ahead. 5. Create a study group. 11 weeks of work undoubtedly, itll be tough to get through this entire period while staying motivated to succeed. Whenever you drop your guard, you need a group of people you can count on to help you with assignments, study for assessments, and use cooperative learning. But be sure to contribute to this group. If you dont, youll be out in the cold with those vicious teachers harnessing their weapons of mass assignments right at your back. 6. Make the most of your weekends. Oh yes, the weekend, the most sacred aspect of any students life (besides college acceptances). With 11 weeks of strenuous work ahead, you need some time to relax and relieve the stress of constant effort. Hang with friends; go to the movies; do whatever you need to relax; youll need it. Since weekends seem to be shorter and shorter as the school year goes on, every moment must be used to recharge your batteries. 7. Recognize your hard work. Its crucial that students and staff recognize their hard work is for a reason. Remember to focus, and on occasion reward yourself with a gift or small treat. That Choco Taco youve been eyeing in the cafeteria you deserve it. It may seem that all this work is devoid of some point, but this isnt true. Your hard work will pay off, and when it does, remember that it was for a reason. Dont make the mistake of losing focus now and regretting it later. 11 weeks of school may be hard to overcome and persevere with 100 percent effort, but you must try. Follow these seven steps and 11 weeks might go by much faster than you realize.

Volunteers Dedicated to Community

by Cory Pressl Students show their dedication to their community by volunteering for first-aid squads and firehouses around New Jersey. Many students are part of volunteer services around Northern New Jersey. These students spent hours training to become qualified volunteers for local First-Aid squads and firehouses. Senior Austin Thomas is a volunteer EMT in Teaneck. Thomas chose to become an EMT to aid and support a local community that needed volunteers. I'm always looking to help people in any way I can, says Thomas, no matter who they are. Thomas enjoys the excitement of working in Teaneck despite the distance, and joined the Teaneck squad because of the camaraderie among the volunteers. I consider everyone over there a part of my family now and wouldn't trade that away for anything, When working, Thomas answers an average of five calls a night. Training to become a volunteer EMT or fireman takes both work and commitment. Participants need to be at least 16 years old and must pay $1500.00 dollars for 220 hours of EMT training; however, many squad houses will cover the cost of the class for joining participants. The course is a combination of classroom, skills session, and clinical time. Upon completion of the course, students are able to assess and appropriately treat conditions ranging from simple fractures, stroke, and chest pain to critical trauma, cardiac arrest, and childbirth. Courses for firemen last 150 hours, and include many different classes and exercises that need to be taken, ranging an Arson Awareness course, to an Elevator Emergency course. Classes can be taken at Morris County Public Safety Academy. Senior Dan Hakakian is a volunteer EMT for Mendham Borough. Hakakian answers calls as often as he can; however, because he is enrolled at Mendham, he is not allowed to answer calls during school hours. I wanted to join the squad to help people, Hakakian stated, and I am interested in the medical field as a possible career. Hakakian said his first priority when answering a call and arriving at a scene is securing the area, making sure it is safe and that all of his co-volunteers are safe as well. Students who volunteer often find it hard to balance both school and volunteer work. Hakakian noted that balancing volunteer work, school, the IB diploma program and sports is difficult, but worth every minute.

Bullis celebrates 30 years

by Jenna Inganamort Physical education teacher Michael Bullis shares 30 great years of memories about his teaching career. There are so many memorable moments in my career here at Mendham, but the one I will always remember is back in 2001 when we played West Morris Central to a close 15-14 loss [in football]. It was such a close game, says Bullis. From yoga to floor hockey, the physical education classes have something to offer for everyone. Bullis, having a daring side, says his favorite activities are always the outdoor ones. You feel so alive when you are outside, especially during the winter. The chill wakes you up, and that moment you walk inside you appreciate a lot more in life somehow. Although physical education is required to take place for at least 150 minutes each week for grades 1-12th, Mendham students want to participate and have a fun time during gym. In todays school systems, physical education is integral. (National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the American Heart Association) I came from a school that emphasized the body, mind, and spirit, adds Bullis. It gives one the release from the academic world. People need to have play time, to get out and relieve stress. Bullis is an avid coin collector. My collection is always continuing and never has an end. Other than coin collection, he enjoys reading nonfiction and obviously being engaged in active exercising. Bullis describes the three qualities of his career that have kept him teaching. Educational. I have learned so much and there is so much yet to learn. Sociable. There are all sorts of things to participate in such as sports, clubs, and activities. Fun. I love coming in every day and seeing my colleagues and seeing the students. We always have fun in gym class.

by Becca Iozzi With kids physical fitness and wellness declining each year, Guidance Counselor Jaime Walker organized Mendhams first Health Fest. Aimed at promoting fun activities for students health and well-being, a variety of games and activities were received well by students. During lunch in the large gym, yoga, pilates, and Busuball were demonstrated along with the jump rope and hula hoop contests. Bicycle and skateboard demonstrations and Wii Fitness games were also showcased. Walker organized the first Health Fest in hopes of showing students fun activities for the winter. With cold months of snow and uncomfortable temperatures, being indoors is more appeasing to many. Being indoors, however, does not mean no activity. Health Fest showed students fun ways to exercise and also relax during the difficult time of winter. Many students gravitated to the Dance Dance station where they unleashed their smooth dance moves while onlookers hackled a laugh. Sophomore Bridget Guariglia especially enjoyed, Watching the boys dance. Across the gym floor Ron Barbogallo, from Kent International, taught students the proper etiquette of skateboards and bicycles, teaching them about helmet sizes and and safety tips when using the equipment. Sophomore Aaron Flitcroft straddled a moun-

Mendhams first Health Fest

tain bike and was enthusiastic about the event, Its fun doing things like this with friends. Flitcroft, as well as a number of other students, agreed Health Fest was a success. Many students found fun in competing with each other in contests. With a hula hoop encircling his waist, sophomore Andrew Brown enthused, Its just fun. Freshman Brooke Philips appreciated the seniors who assisted with Health Fest. Senior Pals Leaders supervised the the different activities and also had fun participating in the events themselves. Its a great way to get the kids active outside the gym class. And competition makes the students work harder, says senior Abby Witzack. The yoga demonstration was popular with many students lunging and raising arms to the ceiling. An Art mural was also available to students who could draw whatever they pleased and a table with nutritional facts and pamphlets on heart health was also accessible to students. Walker felt the first Health Fest was well attended but hopes for more in the future. I wished it could have been longer and have it all day for the health classes to participate in too. And hopefully be able to open it up to the whole school, notes Walker. In the future, Walker hopes to add more vendors from the community too and work with more variety.

by TK Hayes As the list of professional athletes suspended for using performance enhancing drugs grows, both colleges and high schools experience a rise in steroid abuse among athletes. The use of steroids crosses the lines of all sports not only in professional fields but also in college and high school also. Several professional athletes have wrongly taught many young Americans by example that the only way to succeed in sports is to take steroids, Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner told ESPN magazine. One looks at the television and in magazines and find big-muscled athletes. The urge to look like one of them has caused many high schoolers and college students to resort to steroid abuse. According to dosomething.org, more than 57% of athletes in high school in the United States have used or are on steroids. Steroid abuse has reached the point where lives are at risk. The number of sports enhancement drug users has hit a record high. Cyclist Lance Armstrong won multiple Tour de France races, battled cancer, yet is labeled as a doper. Fox news reports the test results not only came back positive but Armstrong also ran a steroid ring among his teammates. A man of so many great accomplishments was stripped of honor because of being a cheater. Many people have opinions about athletes using enhancing drugs but to many they are known as cheaters. High school and college sports see a steady growth in steroids. High school sports have evolved into a winning is everything mentality, and the young resort to enhancing drugs to be winners. Many dont realize that their lives are at stake with these drugs. Two very good athletes from Plano, Texas tragically died from steroids. The drugs impacted the boys hearts, and they collapsed and shortly died from the drugs. Steroids might seem like the thing to do to get bigger and stronger, but in the long run, they are DEADLY. We have to make some radical moves to get the attention of everyone, says former Cardinal Lou Brock in a recent interview Cheaters cant win and steroids have put us in the position that its OK to cheat. Notable athletes Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Mark Macguire bear the stigma of a steroid-using cheater. Sports enhancing drugs are not okay and something has to be done to stop the growing abuse not only in professional sports but in high school and college athletes as well.

Lefties living in a rightys world

by Olivia Spathakis Originally considered sinful, lefties are forced to adapt to the right way and cope with the disadvantages of being left- handed. In several languages including Italian, French, and German the word left is affiliated with the words for awkward, clumsy, and weak. Dating back hundreds of years ago, it was a sin to be dominant with the left hand; lefties were considered sinister and a sign of the devil. Only 50 years ago lefthanded students were forced to write in school with their right hand and punished if they used the left. Left- handedness is noticed as early as an ultrasound. More than 90 percent of the time, if a baby is revealed to be sucking his or her thumb with his/ her left hand on the sonogram, then the baby will most likely grow up to be a lefty. Left- handed dominance is a recessive gene; fewer than 15 percent of people in the world are lefthanded. However, if two parents are left- handed, it is most likely that their child will be left- handed as well. Celebrated-world wide today, August 13th became the International Left- Handers Day. The holiday is designed to raise the awareness of the disadvantages and advantages that lefties endure during routines every day. The disadvantages to lefthandedness: Writing in notebooks is frustrating because there is no room to lay the left hand on a flat surface because the spiral binding gets in the way. It is even worse, when the pen ink gets on the hand because reading and writing goes from left to right. The computer mouse is always on the right side of the computer and is specifically designed for the placement of the index finger. Because the mouse is always on the right side, it is something to which lefties adapted. Handshakes are always exchanged with right hands. It is always awkward when someone puts out his/her right hand and returns the handshake with the left hand. Eating at the right side of the table makes it very easy for a lefty to bump elbows with the person sitting next to him/ her. Because the silverware is held in the dominant hand, it is unavoidable to not bump the person sitting to the left. Student desks are specifically designed for right- handed students. The desks are connected to a chair and there is a section made for the students right hand in order to write more easily. However, it prevents lefties from using it, and the section on the right is used for an armrest while the left hand is busy writing while leaning off the desk. Doorknobs are accessible for right hands to turn the knob. A left hand is incapable of twisting a doorknob because a wrist cannot make a full circle. The advantages to left- handedness: Sports are occasionally an advantage for lefties because the opponent needs to adjust his technique and routine to face a lefty, especially in baseball and fencing. Typing is easier for lefties because the main letters like e, r, t, a, and s are all located on the left side of the keyboard.

One th ous a n d crane s g e n e r a te h o p e

by Katelyn Gaffney An origami crane mural sparks curiosity and interest as Chester ShopRite patrons wonder what it means. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish. Some stories promise eternal good luck, instead of one wish, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. The crane in Japan signifies one of the spiritual or holy creatures, which is said to live for a thousand years. Each origami crane thus represents one year. The story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who was two years old when she was exposed to radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II generated popularity about the one thousand cranes. Inspired by the Senbarzuru legend, she began making origami cranes with the goal or making one thousand. She passed away in 1955 at age 12, shortly after reaching her goal. Children all over the world suffering from cancer continue the quest to make the cranes. Two years ago Mendham students united to create a mobile of cranes honoring a young boy who wished for recovery. Today, a mobile hangs in the Goryeb Childrens Center in Morristown.

A middle-aged woman seeking a romantic relationship with a younger man Dark energy: a hypothetical form of energy that produces a force that opposes gravity and is thought to be the cause of the accelerating expansion of the universe Defriend: another term for unfriend (remove someone from a list of friends or contacts on a social networking site) Earworm: 1. Corn earworm 2. A song or melody that keeps repeating in ones mind Energy drink: a usually carbonated beverage that typically contains caffeine and other ingredients intended to increase the drinkers energy E-reader: a handheld electronic device designed to be used for reading e-books and similar material. After every holiday season, people end up putting unwanted gifts in the back of closets, unopened; however, this year more and more people are discovering new ways to give away unwanted gifts. The concept of re-gifting has circulated the post-holiday atmosphere for years, but it has only recently become socially acceptable to admit to doing it. Essentially, re-gifting involves receiving an unwanted gift and giving it to another person (be careful to remove any personalized tags!). Instead of keeping those awful shoes or that sweater which would make anyone cringe, give it to someone who would appreciate it. In todays economic climate, it is often a way to add some frugality to the most expensive time of year. Why spend more money than necessary? One final reason to try re-gifting this year: It adds closet space for new fashions. If a group of friends is too close-knit to try re-gifting, numerous charities around the area are more than willing to take donations. Many people in New Jersey cannot afford to buy their children gifts this holiday season, and even one small gift could make all the difference. It is never too holiday season. Toys for Tots is a toy drive organized to help less fortunate families, especially those in New Jersey affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Salvation Army also encourages donating unwanted gifts. The nearest location to Mendham is in Morristown, they greatly appreciate every opportunity to aid those in need. If none of these options sound appealing, try regifting to a family member. Make sure the original donor of the gift is not aware of your re-gifting. For a minimal effort, post any unwanted gifts on freecycle.org. This website allows its users to upload information about items and any interested users can pick up the gift without involving any money. The website limits what can be posted and picked up, but fortunately none of the restricted items include toys, clothes, or other common gifts. Their motto, Changing the world one gift at a time truly exemplifies the holiday spirit. In the aftermath of this holiday season, consider donating unwanted gifts. The combination of charity and frugality creates an enjoyable holiday season for many people who would otherwise receive nothing.

by Bruna Rogano Every year, new words are added to the dictionary. When a word is added, the process begins with reading. Merriam-Webster editors look for words in their natural habitat for real evidence of the language use, and choose them based on new meanings and frequency of use. Here are some words that have been added in the past five years: Aha moment: a moment of sudden realization, inspiration, insight, recognition, or comprehension. Air quotes: a gesture made by raising and flexing the index and middle fingers of both hands that is used to call attention to a spoken word or expression Americana: 1. Materials concerning or characteristic of America, its civilization, or its culture 2. American culture: A genre of American music having roots in early folk and country music Brain cramp: an instance of temporary mental confusion resulting in an error or lapse of judgment. Bromance: a close nonsexual friendship between men Bucket list: a list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying.

The fiscal fake-out

by Ian Tanaya On New Years Eve, one day before a combination of across the board spending cuts and the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts were speculated to wreak havoc on the economy, the Senate passed a deal containing $15 billion in spending cuts and over $600 billion in tax increases. On both sides, politicians celebrated the salvation of the economy. However, as some political pundits and economic analysts would point out, the economy is far from being in the clear. The government recently surpassed the $16.4 trillion debt limit, promising another debt debacle just 16 months after the previous fight. The recent fight over the fiscal cliff could have been foreseen in August 2011 when both sides last raised the debt limit. In allowing the increase of the federal governments ability to rack up debt, both Republicans and Democrats agreed to generic, widespread cuts on January 2013. The two sides hoped to establish more specific cuts in order to ensure responsible government spending and avoid the problems that could arise from rapid sequestration; however, the Super Committee of congressmen designed to figure out the new cuts failed to reach a deal. While the deadline approached throughout 2012, neither side felt compelled to act, given the ongoing presidential election. Once President Obama was re-elected, however, the media began covering in earnest the looming expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts and the automatic spending cuts. Talks between Obama and John Boehner slowly progressed through Mid-December until both sides decided to call it quits. Eventually, Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell forged a compromise that would have immediate tax increases and delay almost all of the spending cuts for a couple months. The deal the White House signed into law neither averted the fiscal cliff nor solved the debt problem. America will suffer this debate again in February as both sides must give full attention to the debt and imminent default. President Obama has expressed that he desires to raise taxes further, considering that we cant cut our way out of the debt and suggesting that there is no spending problem. The President may utilize the 14th Amendment to bypass Congress and raise the limit himself, despite protest of uncontrolled executive powers and reinterpretation of a Civil War amendment. Republicans will likely press the rampant spending in Washington and argue that further increasing taxes would halt recovery efforts even more. The upcoming debate is one more example of how dysfunctional the government is today. Both sides seem more interested in political gains than a long term deal of both tax increases and spending cuts. Americans must wake up from their growing apathy towards the divisive, unproductive atmosphere in Washington and demand proactive leadership determined to restore Americas financial future.

by Kirsten Eversen A new study conducted by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention revealed startling statistics regarding drowsy driving. The study determined that nearly 1 in 24 US adults have fallen asleep while behind the wheel. Authorities believe this statistic to be higher, as people may not admit to falling asleep while driving or may not even be aware of dozing off for several seconds. The CDC found that nearly four percent of the US adults surveyed, confessed to falling asleep while driving within the past month. Out of the 147,000 adult participants, researchers concluded that men aged 25 to 34 were the most susceptible to driving while overtired. The study also points to Texans as the most likely to drive when sleepy. Researchers claim the Texan sample may have included a larger number of sleep-deprived young adults than the other 18 states examined, though there seems to be no plausible reason for the spike in that region. Other studies reveal shift workers, commercial drivers, and people with a sleep disorder have the highest risk of falling asleep at the wheel. These groups all involve a chronic lack of sleep. Studies show that the chance for accidents triples when a person gets fewer than six hours of sleep in a night. The most effective way to reduce the chance for drowsy driving would be to

institute a consistent sleep schedule that meets the standard for amount of time slept. This applies to shift workers who work a rotating schedule as well as exhausted students who may pull more than a few all-nighters in a school week. Taking many breaks while driving also decreases the chance of snoozing while on the road. Driving while drowsy proves to be just as deadly as driving while drunk and texting and driving. According to DrowsyDriving.org, most car crashes tend to occur between 4:00 6:00 a.m., midnight 2:00 a.m. and 2:00 4:00 p.m., citing exhaustion as a leading cause. "I think the biggest mistake people make is that they underestimate how tired they are, president and CEO of American Automobile Association Peter Kissinger told CNN, and they overestimate their ability to deal with it when they are driving. The AAA offers a list of suggestions to reduce the chance for drowsy driving. The AAA recommends at least six hours of sleep before making a trip. The organization also suggests that a break should be scheduled for every 100 miles driven. In times of drastic exhaustion, the AAA encourages drinking caffeinated beverages such as coffee or an energy drink. If all else fails in promoting wakefulness behind the wheel, enlist a friend to stay awake with you; or better yet, have them drive you to your destination.

Students a bu s e a d d e ra ll mo re th a n e v e r
by Gabriella Smith The overly prescribed drug adderall has come to be one of the most abused drugs on the black market. Adderall purportedly boosts focus and impulse control for children with attention deficit hyper-activity disorder. A stimulant, the Lebanon Drug Index defines the drug as a psychostimulant medication that contains amphetamine. The drug increases alertness, attention, and energy. It keeps people awake and attentive, helpful for long hours of studying. The problem with adderall is that it is prescribed too widely and has become one of the most easily accessible drugs on the black market. According to Medical News Daily, 96% of pharmacies in America have had Adderall shortages in the past six months. Some people have even been known to pretend they have ADHD so they will be prescribed the drug, when they actually do not have ADHD at all. Because of accessibility, the drug is inexpensive, making it even more convenient for the buyer. Lately, adderall has been distributed largely among low-income patients with poor academic performance in inadequate school systems. Dr. Anderson of Canton, Georgia says, Weve decided as a society that its too expensive to modify the kids environment, so we have to modify the kid. The drug is being prescribed to children who are not even in complete need of the drug, and this can be harmful in the later years of their lives. Once children start taking medication, they automatically believe that something is wrong with them and can become dependent on the drug. Not only is Adderall being prescribed more than ever, but also abused. The highest target population of those who abuse the drug are college students. According to the Huffington Post, somewhere between 20-30 percent of college students abuse adderall. According to a study conducted by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2009, full-time college students between the ages of 18 and 22, were twice as likely to abuse the drug than those not the same age. The benefits of being able to concentrate and study for long hours attract the students to the drug. Adderall is not a drug that should be taken casually or lightly, even though that is what seems to be the case these days. To those who abuse the drug, it may become very dangerous. The drug alters certain chemicals in the brain, increases blood pressure, as well as glucose and heart rate, and can constrict blood vessels. It suppresses the appetite as well as keeps people awake when they may need sleep. Experts warn that continued use can cause an increased risk of paranoia, heart attack, or seizure. It seems as though adderall is one of the most casually taken and highly abused drug out there, but the DEA surely does not share the same opinion. The DEA classifies adderall as a Schedule II drug, alongside cocaine, PCP, and oxycontin. The drug is meant to increase focus. If abused, however, one can struggle with focusing for the rest of his/her life. Medical News Daily says that addiction to Adderall is medically comparable to addiction to cocaine and other amphetamines. The consequences of abuse of or being caught with non-prescribed adderall are severe.

Mendhams PAVE program enriches education

by Kirsten Eversen Resulting from the 2011 school-wide collaboration of service project ideas, PAVE, Providing Academic Vision and Enrichment, developed into a great way of expanding the educational opportunities of Newark children as well as providing Mendham students with an outlet to contribute and share their love for learning. The program aims to enhance the learning experience for students in Newark. Then-juniors Billy Foshay, Natalie Buckner, and Samantha Noll devised the idea for PAVE. After their gradation, seniors Gabby Smith, Kal Roemer, Taylor Smith, and junior Natalie Hassel were appointed to continue their legacy. The program works closely with after-school care program La Casa de Don Pedro in Newark. About 20 kids between the ages of six and ten from La Casa take the trip to Mendham ten times throughout the school year for tutoring. Fundraising efforts by PAVE members provide the money necessary for their transportation and lunch. In its sophomore year, PAVE recently underwent modifications to its curriculum. At the start of the program, PAVE aimed to interest kids in learning through fun, faculty-reliant activities such as nature walks, soccer clinics, and music demonstrations. This year the focus is to work on the areas the kids need to improve upon, explains PAVE director Kim Helsel. This way the children can be more successful in school. The program will now specifically target improving the reading levels for all of the kids by the end of the year. The effects of last years success can be seen in the kids as well as returning volunteers. The kids were so excited to come, PAVE student leader Hassel states. It was great to see them take an interest in learning. One returning student shared a touching moment when reuniting with her tutor. She ran up to her tutor and told her that she had passed the third grade for the first time, Helsel recalls. I cant even put into words how magical this program is. With a new year underway, PAVE seeks to continue its impact. Every time you volunteer, you learn more about the world around you, Helsel concludes. This program has us thinking beyond ourselves.

Mayan Apocalypse: What was the Big Deal?

by Alejandra Garcia With the new year, the Mayan apocalypse no longer torments humanity. Although the world has moved on, the mysterious phenomenon nevertheless remains part of human history. According to the Reuters global poll, last December approximately one out of every ten people in the world had some anxiety about December 21, 2012.The Mayan apocalypse was the most popular doomsday rumor in human history. The internet, the press, and Hollywood, all contributed to the global dissemination of the notion. Hurricanes, turmoil in the Middle East, solar flares, massacres in the U.S, and theories of mystery planets colliding with earth certainly heightened fear around the Mayan Apocalypse. In Russia, the Minister of Emergency Situations issued a denial of the world ending on December 21st 2012, to calm the fear of many Russians. Authorities of the small village of Bugarach in South France banned access to a mountain where it was believed that a UFO would rescue people. Human civilization continues existing, however, and extraterrestrials are clearly not roaming around the streets. Although the Mayan Apocalypse has now been debunked, it captured global attention, and became an intrinsic characteristic of 2012. So now that the fear and suspense is over, the phenomenon can be explored through a more rational lens. The first step in understating the Mayan Apocalypse is decoding the root of it- the Mayan calendar. Many viewed the end of the world as the termination of The "Long Count" cycle of the Mayan calendar, which began in 3114 BCE and was predicted to end on 21/12/12 CE. According to Simon Martin, who is curator of the University of Pennsylvania Museum, Philadelphia's "Maya 2012" exhibition, the Mayan calendar is a series of gear wheels (Little 1), and many people overlooked the complexity of the calendar. In Mexico, at a Mayan site in Palenque, an inscription describes an event taking place in 4,722 of our era, that is the turning of an even bigger cycle" (1). So, December 21, 2012 did not technically mark the start of a new cycle. What occurred on the infamous day was that the calendar did not reset to zero but just kept going to the 14th bak'tun (a 400 year cycle), unlike in 3114 BCE, when the calendar did reset to zero with the turning of the 13th bak'tun. Since the Mayan calendar is so intricate, people seemed to have oversimplified it and jumped to conclusions. In 1987, Jose Arguelles, began exploring the Mayan Calendar in relation to the apocalypse and initiated the New Age movement. Arguelles dedicated his life to analyzing the calendar and organized the Harmonic Convergence which attempted to create a moment of meditation and connection to the sacred sites around the earth (2) according to Daniel Pinchbeck, author of 2012: The Year of the Mayan Prophecy. Graham Hancock, author of Fingerprints of God and an enthusiast of ancient mysteries, described the Mayans as visionaries who provided clues to the beginning and ends of cycles, not the end of human civilizations. Perhaps it was the mystery and the magic of the Mayan calendar that captivated the attention of people in 2012, and made December 21st an iconic date in human history.

US environmental issues put officials in the hot seat

by Liberty Mason-Sharma 1. Sandy rekindles global warming debate On October 29, 2012, superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast of the US. A series of extreme weather events during 2012 brought global warming back into the spotlight. A recent study conducted by the DARA group, an independent group focusing on helping communities in need, suggests that climate change causes 400,000 deaths every year. The level of destruction caused is highly atypical, especially in areas of northern New Jersey. Although many still doubt the phenomenon of global warming, one cannot deny that events such as superstorm Sandy are very unusual. 2. Consumer confidence shakes Apple profits Earlier in 2012, Apple cut its ties with an environmental group which ensures environmentally-friendly activities. This departure led to buyers and investors worrying that Apples products no longer met the environmental standards set by the group. Consequently, stock prices dropped and many people boycotted anything related to Apple. This reaction supports the notion that people are becoming increasingly concerned with environmental issues. 3. US droughts wreak havoc across the world 2012 brought misery and worry to the Mid-West of the US. With Mississippi River levels at record lows, global food prices rose drastically, resulting in the loss of essential profits. A lack of rain or snow leaves soil dry as farmers think ahead to the 2013 growing season. 4. Budd Lake tragedy Locally, the tragic deaths of two young teenagers brought up the issue of ice safety, questioning why the lake was not yet frozen over. Rising temperatures across the world reflect the events in nearby Budd Lake. The EPA projects that average global temperatures are expected to increase by 2F to 11.5F by 2100. The shocking figures from the US government stress the seriousness of the issue of global warming. 5. Fracking becomes a toxic issue Hydraulic fracturing is the practice of releasing natural gas from the ground by using pressurized water mixed with sand and various toxic chemicals to create cracks in rocks deep below the ground. Many Americans blame fracking for causing minor earthquakes, toxic drinking water, and many explosions at fracking sites.

Color-changing lights to improve health

Israel-Gaza crisis cools

by Daniel Hakakian After intense rocket fire from Hamas, Israel launched Operation Pillar of Defense a week long campaign to suppress the violence coming from Gaza. Israel began its campaign on November 14, with an airstrike launched on the car of chief of Hamass military wing Ahmed Jabari. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) attacked more than 1,500 military sites in Gaza. Some sites include, rocket launching pads, smuggling tunnels, command centers, storage buildings and weapons manufacturing. The IDF also fired upon many more top Hamas leaders. In response, Hamas launched about 1,456 rockets into Israel that reached as far as Tel Aviv Israel technology capital. In addition, Hamas is believed to have been behind the bus bombing in Tel Aviv, leaving 28 Israelis injured. Although both sides claimed victory, the operation left about 167 Palestinians dead and 1,269 wounded, and six Israelis dead and 224 wounded. The reason for such a low number of deaths and injuries on the Israeli side is due to their procedures and the Iron Domes. When a rocket is launched from Gaza, a siren blasts throughout the area that it is predicted to hit. When the civilians hear the siren, they are expected to gather in bomb shelters (which are available in many buildings in Israel), and if they are outside or in their cars, they must lie on the ground. Israels Rafael Advanced Defense Systems also recently created the Iron Dome a missile system that determines the path of a rocket coming from Gaza, in order to shoot its own rocket, to explode next to the rocket coming from Gaza. However, if the rocket from Gaza is calculated to fall into an open field or sea, the Iron Dome will not intercept the rocket. With several Iron Domes in Israel (with success rates of over 90 percent) many Israeli lives have been saved. Egypt brokered a ceasefire on November 21 to end all hostilities between Gaza and Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proved to be a successful military leader, which is essential considering the fact that he is up for reelection in January. Most Israelis supported the operation, however, most did not support the ceasefire. According to Globes Israels Business Arena, in response to the question should Israel agree to a ceasefire, 70% of Israelis said no, 24% said yes, and 6% said dont know.

by Liberty Mason-Sharma In 2016, NASA will install the solid-state lighting module (SSLM) into the International Space Station in hopes of increasing astronauts overall health and performance. The new lights vary in color from red to white to blue, according to the time of day. Studies have shown red to be conducive to sleeping while blue promotes efficiency and productivity. NASA aims to install the new lighting system in the next five years and hopefully expedite space explorations. Experts at NASA explain, "On some space shuttle missions up to 50% of the crew take sleeping pills. Insomnia has the potential to lead to fatal mistakes and the loss of billions of dollars of space equipment. The transitioning of light colors carries the potential to increase the amount and quality of work. By raising the level of productivity while simultaneously improving sleep quality, NASA intends for its space programs to overcome greater challenges in the near future. by Liz Abramov 1. Cobb Salad - Many people make the mistake of thinking anything labeled salad is healthy! But in reality some salads, such as the Cobb Salad, are filled with heavy cheese, bacon and thick dressing. Substitute this salad with veggies instead of bacon or cheese and lighten up the dressing for a healthier dish! 2. Energy Drinks - False advertising forces many people to believe that energy drinks are healthy and a great way to get energized; however, energy drinks are not good for you. They are filled with tons of sugar, some additives ,and their boost is not even approved by the FDA. Instead of drinking energy drinks, try to boost energy another way! 3. A frequently discussed issue is the commercial production of the SSLM. The introduction of such a system into homes, and even schools and workplaces; could revolutionize how people work. Productivity and efficiency may rise and sleep deprivation could potentially decrease among stressed or high-achieving students or employees. In a world of increasing societal pressures and responsibilities the SSLM system provides an innovative method for increasing productivity as it wields the potential to change the way people work and rest. By shining a blue light to promote efficiency and a red light to encourage sleep, the SSLM or a more affordable version could easily transition into the lives of millions of civilians. The introduction of the solidstate lighting module could potentially alter productivity and efficiency both in space and on Earth. NASA intends for the specific color scheme ranging from red to blue to increase the amount and quality of work accomplished in space, in particular on the International Space Station. this tasty treat is healthy. Although frozen yogurt has its benefits, if it is topped with cookie dough, whipped cream and peanut butter cups, the calories mount. Instead, top your yogurt with granola and fruit for a healthier treat! 4. Granola Bars - Many granola bars seem healthy, but these bars are often filled with chocolate and tons of sugar. Some granola bars can even contain more sugar than candy bars. Make sure to check the label and look for bars with less than 5 grams of sugar and contains no high fructose syrup. 5. Trail Mix - Dried fruit and nuts are always a good snack, but when added with chocolate and highly salted nuts, trail mix becomes unhealthy. Instead of snacking on trail mix, next time just have some unsalted nuts or only a handful of trail mix.

Shockingly, it was found that Paterno had some knowledge of Sanduskys actions and did not report the crime to campus police. Paterno, along with Athletic Director Tim Curley, was fired. President Graham Spanier was forced to resign. Emotion flowed throughout the campus. Some felt disgust about what had been allowed to happen, while some felt disbelief and anger at the legendary Paternos removal. Sadly enough, on January 22, 2012, Paterno passed away of cancer, with his legacy shrouded in scandal. The famous Paterno statue, signifying his greatness, was removed outside Penn States stadium. by Gabriella Smith Social networking has progressively grown in popularity over the past few years, changing the ways in which humans interact. With the growing popularity of the iPhone, social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have been adding more users than ever. People spend hours a day social networking for several reasons. Social networking sites offer plenty to those who suffer from mere boredom. With pretty pictures, quirky statuses made by friends, comical posts, and much more, the hours pass quickly. Some rely on social networking to thrive on self-esteem with that extra like they get on their profile picture. While theres not anything wrong with that, is there a long-term effect from all of this? Social networking is both a blessing and a burden. Surely, it is amusing to scroll through that neverending newsfeed once in a while, but can it become an obsession? It seems as though people always have the need to see what others are doing and what is going on around them. It is too easy to pick up a phone and scroll through

Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook newsfeeds one after the other. Are these newsfeeds really of any value? Information has never been so easy to obtain. With social networking, one can see what a person is up to according to his latest Instagram picture rather than having to call on the phone and ask. Social networking is not solely to see what peers and acquaintances are doing, however. On Twitter, many can follow specific sports teams, news posts, celebrities, businesses, and even colleges! It is an easy, reliable source of information on the latest and greatest with practically whatever you wish to follow. Social networking is a blessing because of its availability of information, but it is a burden because it can be allconsuming. Some interesting statistics on social networking: 1 out of every 8 people in the world has a Facebook. 9 out of every 10 US internet users are on a social network. 250 million photos are updated daily. In one minute, we produce 694,980 status updates, and 532,080 tweets. The statistics are absurd. So are we obsessed with social media? Or are we obsessed with ourselves?

by Jee DiCola When David O. Russells Silver Linings Playbook was announced, many expressed skepticism, as many had read Matthew Quicks original novel before seeing the trailer. The film, however, quickly proved them wrong, premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and releasing in the United States almost two months later. It garnered eight Academy Award nominations, becoming the first film since 1993s The Remains of the Day to be nominated for the Big Five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay (Original or Adapted), and the first film since 1981s Reds to be nominated for all four acting Awards, plus a nomination for Best Film Editing. The film centers around Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper), a man with bipolar disorder, as he is released from the mental facility, where he resided after he nearly beat a man to death for having an affair with his wife Nikki (Brea Bee). Back into his family, his father, a hardcore Eagles fan Pat Solitano Sr. (Robert De Niro), is gambling money in order to open a restaurant. Mother Dolores Solitano (Jacki Weaver) is forced to take care of both of them, attempting to keep the peace in her family while brother, Jake Solitano (Shea Whigham) is a successful businessman who is engaged and about to move into a new home. As Pat struggles to deal with his mental condition and to win his wife

back, he visits his friend Ronnie (John Ortiz) and wife Veronica (Julia Stiles), for dinner one night. There, he meets Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence), a young woman who recently lost both her husband and her job, and is also dealing with a mental condition. The two discover kindred spirits in each other and begin an unlikely friendship. Pat, however, sees Tiffany as a way to get a letter to Nikki, despite her restraining order against him. In return, Tiffany forces him to become her dance partner in a competition. Throughout the film, the entire story is carried by how Cooper and Lawrence react to each other and to the other characters around them. Lawrence, who was only 21 when the film was shot, had to carry the heavy plot and the appearance of a character who has had so much happen to her, yet still has the feel of a young woman to her. Lawrence has been nominated for Best Actress 41 different times for this film alone, and has already won 20 of those nominations, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Cooper, who has been nominated for Best Actor 20 different times, has won seven. His character suffers from severe mood swings, which prove difficult for many actors, going from a man who is positive and optimistic to a man who is obsessive and angry to a man who is depressed within the span of ten minutes. His intense performance shows how vulnerable Pat really is, despite how blunt and hurtful his

words can be to his family and friends. Along with Lawrence and Cooper, De Niro and Weaver have both been nominated for Academy Awards. For Weaver, its been two years since her last Academy Award nomination, for the same Award of Best Supporting Actress in Animal Kingdom. For De Niro, its been 21 years since he was last nominated for an Academy Award. His last nomination was for Cape Fear in 1991, but his last win was for Raging Bull in 1980. Not only were the actors incredible, but the music made the movie as well. Danny Elfman, who many might remember for his work with Tim Burton, Ang Lee, Sam Raimi, and other popular directors, composed the score, which embodied the heartfelt, warm feelings of the film, as well. British pop singer Jessie J was responsible for singing the films lead single and theme song, Silver Lining (Crazy Bout You), which was a hit in the UK. Other songs by Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Alabama Shakes, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, and more added to the films score The script alone had enough humor to make people laugh, but the heart-warming performances by the entire cast brought the characters to life. Although the novel and film were different, it wasnt a bad thing, and it made the film better than it could have been with the original novel. The unlikely romantic comedy film stole the hearts of critics and audiences everywhere.

by Gabriella Smith MTVs Catfish exposes the truths and lies about online dating as show host Nev Schulman and friend Max Joseph help those who desire to finally meet their online lovers in person. The show stemmed from the documentary Catfish, which follows Schulman in his quest to meet his online love in person. When Schulman discovered she had deceived him in several ways about her true identity, he was heartbroken. Since the release of the indie film Catfish, Schulman has received numerous emails from people relating their experiences with online relationships. Schulman handpicked people who sent him emails requesting help in determining whether their onlineonly significant others are truthful about their identities and arranging their face to face meetings.

Catfish reveals mysteries of online relationships

Catfish is a strange-sounding name for a show. They name the show catfish because a catfish is an online figure that pretends to be someone that he is not by using other peoples pictures and information. Usually, those in the show waiting to meet their online lovers in person refuse to believe that their potential soul mates are catfish, but that is not usually the case. Each episode of the show features a different person who has been long waiting to meet their online-lovers. Some have been in their online-relationships for over eight months, while others have been talking for nearly ten years. The suspense leading up to the point in the show where the two finally meet is irresistible. Some express shock with what they see, and others have a happier ending. Catfish exposes the very real dangers of meeting people online. A false identity is created easily with stolen photos and information from another. In a sketchy online chatroom, the truth about identities is rare. People must be aware of how easy it is for one to steal anothers identity. The internet is not a safe place to meet people. Behind a screen it is very easy to lie, and many people do. It is always a tense moment in the show when the two finally meet face-to-face and exchange awkward hellos and first longawaited first words. The show follows up with paraphrase on how the couples then begin dealing with their real-world feelings towards each other after their first meet-up. Catfish reveals not only the dangers of online dating, but also the ease with which a false identity is created.

by Daniel Hakakian Producer Michael Jacobs will revive the beloved 90s Boy Meets World with sequel Girls Meets World, which starts shooting this monthb. Boy Meets World originally aired on ABCs TGIF (Thank God Its Friday) specials and lasted from 1993 to 2000. The sitcom followed the complicated, yet comical, life of Cory Matthews (Ben Savage), and his friends Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong) and Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel), from middle school, to college. The series ended when the married couple, Cory and Topanga, moved to New York, along with Shawn. Only Savage and Fishel are confirmed to be in the sequel, Girl Meets World; however, there is some speculation that other former cast members will join in the new Disney Channel show as well. Savage and Fishel will keep their characters as Cory and Topanga, but will now have trouble raising their 13-year-old daughter. The daughter and main character will be named Riley, but auditions for the role are ongoing. Riley will also have a loyal, yet intimidating, friend named Maya, much like Shawn in Boy Meets World. Cory and Topanga will also have another son named Elliot. Much confidentiality surrounds the show, as it is in its very early stages, but Savage did announce that he will return to the show as a history teacher. The show will entertain both adults and kids and will bring back lots of nostalgia from the 90s. Savage admits that he is worried that the show will not catch on, but is very excited to play his part. Many students fondly recall the escapades of the Matthews family and eagerly await the sequel. Im most excited to see the returning actors and actresses and how they have grown, says senior Gabby Smith.

With a variety of heel heights and colors, these fur shoes keep feet warm during the cold winters. Forever 21, known for their great prices and deals especially on shoes and accessories, advertise faux fur boots in different styles including wedge heels, flat work boots, and cuffed ankle booties with fur trims for under $40. With furs rise in popularity, animal organizations are trying to find alternative furs to wear for the fashion industry. According to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatments of Animals), Cruelty-free fabrics and faux furs are available in stores everywhere, and PETA continues to work with designers and clothing retailers to encourage them to use and sell only animalfriendly fabrics. Fashion designers including Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, and Ralph Lauren all manufacture faux fur and animal- friendly fabrics for their collections as well. Because of the collaboration among these organizations and designers, winter essentials prove not only to be chic, but harmless to animals as well.

by Olivia Spathakis Whether it is lined or completely made of fur, aside from the winter essentials, the classic fur coat and the contemporary fur vest not only make the winter more bearable, but also provides a fashion necessity that makes winter a stylish season. Fur reflects a universal fashion statement dating back to centuries, and although its popularity fluctuates with trends, this year fur emerges as a winter must-have. Traditionally worn for warmth, in 2012- 2013 fur provides another important essential to winter wardrobes. In addition to fur coats, vests, hats, and mittens, many designers follow the fur trend in their fall/ winter collections with skirts, handbags, and shoes to show off the latest trend. Patterns and colors bring a new way to wear fur in a fun and daring way. Banana Republic, Michael Kors, Armani Exchange, Coach, and many other brands promote the fur fashion by including a piece of clothing or accessory in their ad campaigns. Winter calls for hair trends

by Olivia Spathakis By accessorizing with different haircuts, hairstyles, and hats, winter brings out individual styles along with some trendy and daring fashion statements. It is fun to change looks up with different haircuts for a new season. The haircuts most popular for winter include medium and long layers to enhance more volume and a face-frame cut to focus and highlight features. Layers: Whether hair is short, medium, or long in length, or any texture, getting a layered look is always possible. Short layers tend to look great on both short and long bobs, adding definition and volume. Medium layers are very versatile because they can be worn on short, medium, and long length hair while creating a thickness. Long layers often form a cut shaped like a triangle in the back to emphasize the cascading hair trend. Face Frame: A face frame is a gradual cut at chin level that emphasizes features, and can work on any hair length, as well as being worn with bangs (front or side). Additionally, a face frame can be cut to be closer to or farther from the chin depending on length and style. With the New Year come new hairstyles and trends. The most popular hairstyles include the half up- half down style, ombre color, and a chignon bun. These create fun, bold, and sophisticated statements. Half up- half down: Wearing hair half up- half down provides an alternative way to get hair out of the way from the face. This look can be achieved by braiding or taking the front sections of hair and then pulling them back while securing with a clip or an elastic hair tie. In addition, once the hair is put back, braiding the extra hair in the clip/ hair tie, or putting the hair in a bun is also an easy way to wear the look. Ombre color: Ombre is the term for shade in French. Creating an ombre hair color can be done very dramatically or subtly. Popular in the summer of 2011, the look remains hot for the winter of 2013. The ombre hair colors highlight darker roots with gradually lightening lengths. Generally, this hairstyle can be produced at home by buying a blonde hair permanent dye package and following the instructions. However it is necessary to deviate when it comes to dying the roots and tips, because the roots should not be dyed. Instead, as the dye is applied from the mid- length to the tips, the dye in the mid- length hair section should be washed out before the tips so that the tips are lighter. Chignon bun: Chignon is the term for a low bun, or high bun in French; however, it most commonly features as a low bun secured at the neck. The chignon bun can provide an elegant and sophisticated updo, perfect for prom, or a messy and casual bun for those Monday morning classes. Just making a low ponytail, twisting the ponytail, and then wrapping the hair around the hair tie forms the simple chignon bun. To top off this years hottest hairstyles, accessorize with a hat. This year, stores are promoting all different types of styles of hats whether it is croquet, knit, fur, or topped with a pompom. The winter essential hats for 2013 include beret, beanie, slouchy, headband, and earflap hats. Found in the accessories section of almost every store, these fashion statements never go out of style.

Winter Track dominates Morris County Relays

by Ed Thomas The track and field team showed their dominance throughout their season especially at the Morris County Relays (MC relays) on Monday January 7th and the New Balance Games (NB games) on Saturday January 26th. Girls senior captains Laura Papili, Skye Tonnesson, Katie Rouse, Reagan Kolakowski, Abby Seel, and Liberty Mason-Sharma led the girls to first place overall at the MC relays. Girls 4x400m relay team Papili, junior Cali Heffernan, and sophomores Sierra Tonnesson and Audrey ONeil achieved first place at the MC relays in 4:09.49 and 4:04.58 at the NB games to achieve ninth. Seel, Kolakowski, Skye Tonnesson, and junior Mackenzie Barry took first place in the distance medley race, or DMR in both meets. With a time of 12:19.75 at the MC Relays, the girls DMR was just three seconds from a meet record, defeating their opponents by 27 seconds. At the NB games they finished with a time of 12:08.16. Top finishes at the MC relays included 4x51.5m shuttle hurdles from MasonSharma, Papili, Heffernan, and sophomore Christine Graziano with a third place finish. The girls performed very well, head coach Roy Hamblen says, It was the first win at the county relays in school history. Boys senior captains Tom Pavarini, Pat Carney, Adam Mszanski, John Obiedzinski, Charlie Turner, and Cory Pressl led the boys to achieve an fifth place overall at the MC relays. Pavarini, junior Steve Mathews, and sophomores Dylan Heraghty and Paul Ehmann placed second in the distance medley race. In a close race the boys 4x200m relay, Carney, junior Will Robinson, and sophomores Sam Curtis and Christian Kildal-Brandt finished with a time of 1:38.55, only one and a half seconds behind first place finisher Delbarton. Shot putters Obiedzinski and senior Dayvon Jones had a combined distance of 82ft inch. Obiedzinski threw for 44ft 11 inch and Jones achieved a 37ft 1 inch throw. At the NB games Pavarini, Mathews, Ehmann, and sophomore Nate Duvall ran for 15th place at a time of 8:16.26 in the 4x800m relay, while Carney, Heraghty, Kildal-Brandt, and junior Malcolm Montilus achieved 25th place in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:34.82. The success of the team at the MC relays and NB games as a whole reflected the efforts and knowledge of the coaching staff. History teacher Chris Zegar coaches distance runners and science teacher David Quinn coaches throwers. With practices occurring six days a week, 2-2 hours each day, track athletes practice in a variety of exercises. Ranging from speed workouts to learning mechanics, the coaching staff reaches all aspects that will increase their athletes performances. Sprinters have three to four speed workouts per week (repeat 200m-repeat 500m). Sprinters need to have a fast acceleration and agility to be ahead of the competition. Distance runners have three workouts per week and a five to six mile run on non-workout days. Distance runners workouts are longer distance runs but at a slower pace compared to sprinting workouts. Workouts and exercises help make them [track athletes] physically better, but most of it is mental, Hamblen says. You need them to start believing in themselves. Throwers and athletes in field events go through vigorous weight-lifting to work on upper body strength; however mechanics and agility can greatly affect the performance of an athlete. It takes the perfect blend of technique and strength to compete against other athletes, pole-vaulter and sprinter Mszanski adds. Whether it be sleeping or listening to music, every track athlete has his own way of getting physically and mentally prepared for a meet. We try to ease the nervousness by just having fun before we run, Turner says. Getting prepared reduces the stress. Pavarini is a fan of taking a power nap before a big race so he can be fresh to run. I have pasta the night before the meet, and on race day I study my times given to me by Mr. Hamblen, Kolakowski says. Along with all captains from all sports, the winter track captains have expectations for their teammates. I expect my teammates to have a passion for the sport, Pavarini says. Carney adds, I like seeing my teammates performing to their fullest potential.

Swimming maintains streak

by Daniel Hakakian Mendham swimming shows great signs of success, as they prepare for their postseason meets. Head coach Karen McCourt and first year assistant coach Andrew Palmer lead the team of about 50 swimmers, with the help of captains Maya Scheidl, Celia Frick, Isabelle Cecere, Bizzie Handen, Courtney Cavanaugh, Jordan Rogus, Tristan Cembrinski, Jake Skuraton, and Alin Kenworthy. Practices are held at the Morristown High School swimming pool from 78:30 in the evening, five days a week. Swimmers always start their practices off with a 400-meter freestyle, or 16 laps in the 25 meter pool. After the warm-up, the swimmers go into an endurance workout, or a technical workout. An endurance workout, for examples, includes sets such as swimming 50 meters eight times and increasing speed by two second every 50 meters. A technical workout includes practicing relay starts, flip turns, or expanding lung capacity. So far, the girls have won eleven dual meets and lost one, and the boys have won six dual meets and lost five. The girls also won the Morristown U&ME Invitational while the boys placed fifth out of twelve teams. This year is the swim teams best season yet, McCourt remarks, Both the boys

and girls teams have gone farther than ever before. Many current swimmers also hold school records. Scheidl, Cecere, Frick, and Olivia Rogus hold the record for the 200 meter medley relay; Cecere for the 200 meter freestyle; Frick for the 200 meter individual medley; and Scheidl for the 100 meter freestyle. Mendham swimming is an extremely supportive team and although we are still a very young team, I know that what we have accomplished in the past couple of years is incredible, Scheidl admits. Kenworthy holds the record for the 200 meter freestyle, and Jordan Rogus for the 100 meter breaststroke. Senior Tyler Carrara agrees with Scheidl. I definitely wish I started swimming earlier. What entices me the most is that the teams spirit is awesome, and everyone supports each other regardless of how fast you are.

Congratulations

to Liz Malman on reaching 1000 points!

Injuries plague wrestlers

by Matt Kuhn The sweat and effort that has been put into the preparation for this season has been tremendous, from the weight room to the wrestling mat, Mendham wrestlers return for their 2012-2013 season. Mendhams wrestling program had tremendous success in its 20112012 season and produced two district champions Jake Aloia and Kevin Button, as well as standout wrestling statechampion Ryan Harrington. Current senior captains Jimmy Conte and Vince Pallone, and seniors Corey Cohen, Mike Fusaro, Phil Schlegel, Matt Fox, and Jack Snyder anchor this years squad. The seniors worked through a very tough offseason training regiment with the underclassmen. Many of the students participated in wrestling tournaments and wrestling with different clubs to hone their skills and techniques. The hard work that was put in the weight room and wrestling room has created a new mindset for this squad; Its extremely challenging, but its the challenge that drives us says Fox. This will of iron has been a cornerstone of the program for years and its resurgence this year is stronger than ever. The current record of 5-8 does not necessarily indicate the strength of the team as they compete against highly talented teams. One of the major reasons that their success has been limited is due to the number of injuries the varsity line has suffered. They still have not had a match with a full roster of healthy varsity athletes. There have been many underclassmen standouts such as junior Sam Button, sophomore Timmy Byrne and freshman Chris Schlegel. These wrestlers as well as many of the seniors are expected to place highly at the district tournament. We have a very strong team, but we have been plagued with injuries explains Conte. Fortunately we have enough depth and leaders on this team to have a successful season and hopefully make the state sectional tournament. The sport of wrestling itself is unlike others due to the strong emphasis on the individual. For example a weak team could produce a single wrestler that could keep advancing. Our goal as a team is to qualify for the state sectional as a team says head coach Stephen Baig. Individually we aim that our wrestlers perform well in the tournaments, and hopefully advance to the state level. The wrestling team has its largest roster of all time. With this large roster and only a few select varsity spots, the JV program has many of promising young wrestlers. They compete after the varsity matches and are gearing up for their NJAC tournament. Some of these promising wrestlers include Aidan Williams, Chris Spletter, Brett Ransengola, and Rocco Pellechio. With this fresh up-and-coming talent, Mendham should have a strong team in years to come.

Hockey clinches Halvorsen title

by TK Hayes As the regular season nears its end, the hockey team looks toward States to close out the most successful season Mendham has seen in recent history. The Mendham Hockey team, known to many as Mendham Puck or the new nickname Westside Puck, currently posts a 15-2-1 record. Clinching the first seed in the Halvorsen Division, the squad is looking to win it all and go very far into States. The team chemistry this year is great, senior captain Conor ONeill explains. We all have trust in each other, and I believe that we can do really well heading into States. Captains ONeill, Connor Lam, Matt Farina and John Gionco bring experience and leadership to the varsity hockey program. Despite having only three seniors on the team, the roster includes talented underclassmen. Players to watch include junior transfer Paul Michura and New Jerseys leader in points and assists, freshman Grant Jozefek. According to US Hockey Report, Jozefek is the 27th best of the U15 Select Camp rankings. The Mendham forward leads the state in points (82) and assists (40), and holds second in goals (42). The kids a stud. Hes got great hands, great vision on the ice and makes things happen every shift, goalie Lam shared. The increase of talent and success has drawn more fans to games, providing an exciting atmosphere to local hockey arenas. As the team approaches the pinnacle of its season, white-outs will cover the stands.

Rigorous training fuels cheerleading

by Jenna Inganamort Blood, sweat, and tears, words that make people think about hard, rigorous training, represent what cheerleaders experience. While some consider cheerleading a sport, many disagree. The amount of time, dedication, and energy parallels any other high school sport. The cheerleading program has grown to include four teams. Each team works hard to be the best they can be and give the greatest performance for games and competitions. Junior varsity scholastic cheerleaders cheer for the junior varsity boys football team and the varsity girls basketball team. Coach Kourtney Hydock encourages the girls to reach their true potential. Varsity scholastic cheerleaders cheer for varsity boys football and varsity boys basketball. Coach Michele Magulli both mentors and works with the team. My favorite part of coaching is the chance to not only coach the girls and advise them in cheering but to advise them on the daily trials and tribulations of life, says Magulli enjoy that they look to me as a mentor as well as a coach. The competition team has expanded to two teams this year. In the past, the competition team was split into two squads, but later placed back into one due to financial aspects. Antoine Pierce coaches competition team A and competition team B. The girls earn their bids to the High School Cheerleading Nationals in Orlando, Florida through their performances at multiple tri state competitions. Both teams practice three times a week, often at a private gym, to perfect difficult stunts, cheers, and tumbling. Tryouts earn team members a spot on the various teams. Cheerleading requires a commitment to skill-building, similar to any other sport. Many underestimate the strength it takes to perform certain stunts. Just one off-timed stunt can ruin the chances of achieving gold. For scholastic and competition cheerleaders, a mistake can cost them an injury. Anywhere from concussions to tearing a ligament is not out of the ordinary for cheerleaders, especially at a collegiate level. For cheerleaders safety comes first. The girls live for teamwork, dedication, and practice. At the end of the day, however, its the gleaming smiles when the girls walk onto the court or mat that strikes the crowd and boost their reputation.

New coach leads girls hoops

by Will Gibbs With a new head coach, the girls basketball team shows signs of enjoying a winning season for the first time in a number of years. Under head coach Mark Gnapp, the girls currently post an impressive 9-4 record. Gnapp comes to Mendham with 23 years of coaching experience. He coached the boys and girls teams at Parsippany High School for 21 seasons and at Morris Catholic for two seasons. I am really enjoying coaching at Mendham, explains Gnapp. The players are very dedicated and we really have great team chemistry. The players work hard in practice and continue to improve each day. The girls have had impressive victories over Morristown, Jefferson, and Hanover Park. The young squad only has two seniors, captain Liz Malman and Liza Morrison; however, the team lacks neither leadership or dedication. Aubree Udell, Jaclyn Walsh, Lauren Murphy, Lauren Bohl, Michelle Stanton, Emma Spoldi, Irene Margiotta, and Courtney Bundschuh round out a strong squad. The whole team contributes whether it is on the court playing or cheering and supporting from the bench, explains Morrison. Our success can be attributed to our coach who continues to make us better. We are fortunate to have him as our coach because he is extremely knowledgeable. The team received the sixth seed in the County Tournament and will play against Roxbury in the first round. If they win, they will face Morris Catholic in the second round.

Dominant fencing team Boys basketball expects success looks to continue success
looks to find the same success of last years team. Persau attributes much of the success of the team to Outwin, He is a very experienced fencer who has fenced all around the world. This experience has clearly pushed Mendham forward, with a state championship in his first year as head coach. Assistant coaches Barbara Dunnick, Meimee Persau, Patric Wallace, and Adelio Campos have also helped Mendham excel. With solid coaching, the talent across both teams will not go unnoticed. On the boys side, Lars Swanson, Joe Falvo, and Persau anticipate strong individual and team finishes. On the girls side, Sidhu along with Sarah Zimmerman look to push their team past the round of 16. by Dylan McDevitt The boys basketball team looks for continued success this season under new coach Kevin Schmid. Mendham has experienced great success on the basketball court over the past decade including four consecutive Morris County championships and a Group III State Championship title in 2010. Coach Jim Baglin stepped down this season as head coach and took on the role as freshman coach. Having worked as an assistant to Baglin for several years, fans can expect a similar winning season. Captains Alex Jacobs, Will Gibbs, and Bobby Stoltz lead an experienced varsity squad. Seniors T.K. Hayes and Kal Roemer join Gibbs and Stoltz along with Jacobs to make up the starting five. Juniors Mike Sinzer, Austin Marconi, Jack Horan, and Joe Lamberto provide the team with quality minutes off the bench. Five-year J.V. and assistant coach Schmid has garnered three J.V.

by Ryan Lander Both the boys and girls fencing teams have qualified for states with championships now in their sights. Both teams stand undefeated at 7-0 each, with the boys team looking to defend their state championship from last season while the girls team looks to build off a round of 16 finish in the state tournament last year. Boys captain Kyle Persau and girls captain Natasha Sidhu are leading the team towards their goal of a state championship. We think we have a very strong team this year and an excellent chance to win the state championship again, Persau says that, The girls team is looking very strong as well, and will be looking to place high in the state tournament. In his second year of coaching both teams, head coach Tom Outwin

county championships in five seasons. I dont expect much change because Schmid was previously the J.V. coach and has been a part of the program for some time now, says Gibbs. I expect a good season with Coach Schmid. The team is currently 10-7, living up to the expectations of Gibbs. The basketball team generates the most fan support among Mendhams competitive teams. Each game draws a great-turn out with fans. The students have even made a Facebook page to help organize a theme before each game. The student body enjoys their regular involvement in every game and feels their role helps the team win games. For senior Hayes the support is such an advantage for our team because it gets all the players amped to perform at their best. The team expects great results this season and hopes to do well in the Morris County Tournament and the State tournament in late February into March.

THE PATRIOT February 2013

by Matt Kuhn On Sunday, February 4th,a football game of epic proportions was played in New Orleans as the San Francisco 49ers faced the Baltimore Ravens for the Lombardi Trophy. For the first time in NFL history, opposing head coaches are brothers. John and Jim Harbaugh made history as soon as their teams stepped onto the field. A brotherhood rivalry created in the backyard, as youths was showcased on one of the greatest stages. This game also featured Alicia Keys, singing the national anthem. Beyonc performed the half time show, and former Super Bowl MVP Phil Simms announced the seasonal finale of pro football. Jim Harbaugh hoped to capture a Super Bowl ring in his sophomore season as head coach. Jim came quite close last year as the 49ers lost a heart-breaking thriller in the NFC championship to the New York Giants, the eventual Super Bowl champions. He made a name for himself with his success at the collegiate level, transforming Stanford into a powerhouse program. So far in his NFL career, he has succeeded in restoring the chanpionship caliber club the 49ers enjoyed in the 80s. Instead of having Joe Montana as an ace in the hole, he relied on the young and explosive Colin Kaepernick. This 2012 squad bears many strong resemblances to the 49ers of the past, especially with the major quarterback debate between Alex Smith and Kaepernick. About 20 years ago, the debate was between Montana and Steve Young. The 49ers relied on the playmaking ability of their star tight end Vernon Davis, the raw athletic ability of

Brothers battle for the Bowl

Kaepernick, and a dominant defense. This defense has a strong core of ProBowlers such as linebackers Aldon Smith, Navarro Bowman and Patrick Willis. Other Pro Bowlers on this squad include, defensive tackle Justin Smith, offensive tackle Joe Staley, free safety Dashon Goldson, strong safety Donte Whitner, offensive guard Mike Iupati, and running back Frank Gore. Fueled by the emotion during their post season run, The Ravens pulled out a Super Bowl win as they did in 2000. Team captain Ray Lewis plans to retire after this season and hoped to go out on top with one last ring. The unquestionable leader of the squad, Lewis brings tremendous passion to the table. This franchise was hungry for another Super Bowl, having missed the game-winning field goal the previous year that would have put them in the Super Bowl last year. The Ravens have been waiting for this opportunity, and they capitalized on it. Joe Flacco played on a high level in the post season and was a major contributor to the teams success. Another Raven player named to the Pro Bowl was ball hawk Ed Reed. Reed and Lewis led a defense that frustrated the 49ers. The star running back, who has been a major offensive weapon throughout the season, is Pro Bowler Ray Rice. With help from Pro Bowl fullback Vontae Leech, the duo has made the key plays leading to the Ravens success. The Super Bowl was a thriller; both teams had the personal and playmaking ability to keep fans enthusiasm high throughout the game. It definitely was a battle of the rising stars of the 49ers and the old guard of the Ravens. Despite the Ravens not having the defense to which they have been accus-

tomed in past years, the current defense stepped up, rivaling the strength of 2000. They stayed in the playoffs due to the large number of points their offense was able to score. The success of the Ravens in this game depended on Flacco. Performing as he did in the post season, the Ravens were able to battle for the Lombardi trophy. Had he reverted back into the inconsistent quarterback he was in the regular season, the Ravens would have been in trouble In the post season the 49ers struggled against the pass as was showcased in the NFC championship against the Atlanta Falcons. The rush defense caused problems for the offense. , Despite Kaepernicks valiant effort in the game, the Raven big defensive stop in the fourth quarter quenched the hopes of the 49ers Super Bowl dream. As predicted the game was close, but the Ravens pulled it out by 3 points. Flaccos hot streak, as evidenced in the post season and his aerial attack, complemented by a stout running game from Rice and company, contributed to the win. (The last time the 49ers dealt with such a balanced offense was when they were steamrolled by the Seattle Seahawks.) The Ravens won the game handily, holding off the 49ers comeback in the fourth quarter for a thriller finish. Final score: 34-31! Note: As usual, the Super Bowl commercials did not disappoint. The Dorito-eating goat, the wolf puppy and his growling mom , along with the sentimental Clydesdale trainers reunion with his horse, captured the attention of Super Bowl fans.

by Dylan McDevitt As research continues, head injuries cause great concern for contact sports such as football, and the NFL continues to find more ways to improve player safety. In, 1905 when 18 people died and 149 were seriously injured in football, President Theodore Roosevelt asked football programs to seek adaptations to the game to make it safer. The forward pass and the introduction of the leather helmet were added for player safety. Since 1905, football has seen countless changes to improve the safety for players. Former players are coming forward claiming they experienced repeated head injuries that went undiagnosed. During the 1980s, a concussion was only diagnosed if a player lost consciousness (Only 10% of concussions result in loss of consciousness). In regard to the leagues mindset to concussions during the 1980s, NFL legend John Madden said, But that was the type of thinking: dont hurt your ankle, dont hurt your knee where you cant run, dont hurt your shoulder where you cant tackle, but your head? Heck, thatll clear up in a couple minutes and youll be ok. Former player Andre Waters tragically took his life at the age of 44. Journalist Alan Schwarzs researched the life of Waters who was known for having concussions during his career. This was one of the first times someone unaffiliated with sports researched the health of an athlete. The neuropathol-

ogist, Dr. Bennet Omalu of the University of Pittsburgh, a leading expert in forensic pathology, determined that Mr. Waters brain tissue had deteriorated into that of an 85-year-old man with similar characteristics as those of earlystage Alzheimers victims, reported Schwarz. Omalu posthumously diagnosed Waters with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which the Boston University Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy defines as A progressive degenerative disease of the brain found in retired athletes with a history of repetitive concussions. It is clinically associated with the development of memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, paranoid and aggressive behavior, depression, dementia, and Parkinsons disease. Ironically, when asked how many concussions he suffered during his playing career, Waters replied, I lost count at 15. I just wouldnt say anything. Id sniff some smelling salts, then go back in there. Waters lack of concern over his concussions reinforces the fact that they were not viewed as a serious injury during his playing career. The issue currently in the league is the mindset of the players. Players have been told to be vicious throughout their youth; fans recognize football as a tough game that is not easy. Players are praised for toughness and physicality. A players safety is not the top priority of his opponents. Linebacker James Harrison has been quoted saying, I am here to hurt people. The mindset of active players is not where it needs to be for the NFL to decrease the risk of concussion. The NFL started an awareness campaign targeting youth football programs. The Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports Program was started to change the mindset of the youth and keep football safe for future generations. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has written to every states government requesting a law that would allow youth players to return from a concussion after they have been cleared by a trained medical practitioner. Besides targeting the youth, the NFL has changed their rules to improve player safety and reduce the potential for concussions. Kickoffs are the most dangerous play in football because players are running full speed at each other over long distances. Most serious injuries happen on these plays, especially in 2010 when Rutgers player Eric LeGrand suffered a paralyzing blow on a kick off. To increase the safety of players, kickoffs have been moved up five yards which makes it harder to return the ball. Concussions dropped 12.5% since implementing this rule. Defensive players dream of when a receiver runs over the middle of the field to catch a ball because they can deliver a huge hit on him. The receiver is defenseless in these scenarios. This defenselessness has caused the NFL to implement a rule outlawing hits to head on a receiver when he is making this catch. Also, an independent doctor is now required to clear a player after receiving a head injury. The doctor can be in no way affiliated with a team. This increases player safety allowing players to be judged by someone who is not looking for them to return to the game to win. The NFL is taking great strides addressing the concussion issue in the league, but needs to support retired players who suffered concussions as well. Former player David Pear speaks out asking parents to not allow their children to play football. He has suffered countless injuries in his career and has had eight surgeries for his spinal cord and hip. Pear suffers from vertigo, memory loss, and speech impairment. He has millions of dollars worth of medical bills and is uninsurable due to his poor health. The league has not paid for any of his medical bills and should take action to support for retired players who did not have the same safety precautions as players today. The NFL has come a far way combatting their concussion problem. The league has changed rules, targeted the youth, and changed the mindset of the game to better football. These changes have caused concussion rates to drop. Although the NFL is making progress, much still needs to be done. The NFL needs to support former players who suffered brain injuries who did not have the same education about concussions as players do today. With more research done about the complexity of the brain, hopefully the NFL will be able to further their actions.
