ProVision Heritage
ProVision is synonymous with network management for Eclipse and other Harris Stratex devices. ProVision development builds on our expertise, experience and user feedback to provide a quantum leap forward in functionality and ease of use. A large part of this superior performance is due to the Harris Stratex engine, which is optimized for management of microwave centric networks and associated devices, such as the Harris Stratex Networks Eclipse or ADM. All references to ProVision in this document refer to ProVision 6.0 and later versions.

Expert Knowledge at Hand

ProVision features expert-knowledge direction. By providing a probable cause and repair action for each event, it does more than simply collect and present network data. It groups related events, looks at historical events, and informs on how to restore or improve network availability by prioritizing network resources and any remedial action. The intuitive operation and comprehensive documentation of ProVision means minimal system administration and user training is required, and upgrades can be operator installed, remotely or online. ProVision provides a hardware-independent solution with Server operation on Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista, Windows 2003 Server, or Solaris 9. Client operation is available for Windows 2003 onwards. Both WAN (Wide Area Network) and LAN networks are supported. Redundant server backup for security is also available. The tools used in building ProVision are platform independent and interchangeable, and the MySQL database can be exchanged for Oracle, if required.

Network Management Integration

ProVision allows integration of NMS solutions such as TeMIP, Netcool, HP-OpenView, Remedy, Metrica, and Concorde. It also supports solutions with infrastructure vendors such as Nokia, Ericsson, Alcatel, Nortel, Motorola, and Huawei. This is especially relevant to next generation mobile and wire-line networks, where the number of network elements is expected to grow exponentially, bringing greater pressure on service activation and support. A network-wide inventory manager supports tracking of network assets including in-service network elements, spare capacity and spares holdings.

Core ProVision Functionality

ProVisions core functionality is managing and monitoring the elements in a wireless radio network. ProVision has an easy to use interface and tools that enable users to view events from network devices. This means that users can identify problem areas in your network, and determine how to solve these problems. To do this, core ProVision functions include: Using ProVision to create and maintain network maps Monitoring and managing device status, performance, and event reporting Configuring Harris Stratex Networks devices

Hierarchal Map Display

ProVision provides a hierarchal map view for rapid drill-down on network events. For example, radio status is color-coded; devices in red have a Critical Error status.

Map view window

Explorer tree status and navigation of network elements

Network Event Log Window

Link and Node Based Status and Reporting

The default map view provides an efficient way to access and run link or node information reporting. Users can select a single node or link and, with a right-mouse click, open an event browser, view a report, check configuration, and even update and review circuits.

Flat Map Display

ProVision provides a flat map view, in which all network elements are displayed in a single map window. This view allows users to shift immediately from a traditional hierarchal view showing regions, sites, and elements, to an all network element view. Flat map views can be displayed from any hierarchal location within the network. A flat map view selected at the root container displays all the network elements whereas a flat map view selected for a region or site displays all the network elements grouped under the container selected. This alternative view is invaluable when the user wishes to maintain the logical structure of regions/sites and view the status of all network elements at a single glance.

Submaps
Submaps are used to display both ends of a radio link, to allow appreciation of the entire link, and to make troubleshooting easier.

For example, in this submap with errors, the user can identify the errored component (the radio) and identify the amount of critical, major, and warning level events.

Bulk Configuration
Bulk device configuration is available for DART trap destinations and Eclipse trap destinations, NTP time server IP address, and Ethernet port settings. Additional bulk configuration options may be added in the future, expanding on customer requirements.

Circuit Management
Users can view and initiate network circuits down to the E1/DS1 traffic level. DS3/E3 & STM-1 traffic is also traced. Once circuits are initiated, they are graphically presented to the user so they can be monitored for faults, and assigned priorities if required. Circuit configuration and routing can be changed as required.

Circuit Provisioning
The Circuit Provisioning function allows users to select one or more Eclipse devices and create a circuit between the devices, complete with specifically configured ports. This circuit is then written directly to the radios. The ability to do this from ProVision makes ProVision a central circuit manager for Eclipse radios.

Circuit Diagnostics
If a fault is suspected on a circuit, loopbacks and internal test generators can be employed at any point along the circuit path. This allows faults to be isolated quickly and easily.

Logical Container Management

Network elements that share a common purpose can be grouped together to form a Logical Container. This grouping allows them to be monitored, managed, reported on, and viewed independently from the main network and at the same time they continue to be viewed as part of the wider network. An example of a logical container might be: The grouping of high capacity, high priority backbone radios. To allow the user to quickly and easily differentiate between high and low impact failures and to respond accordingly. To group all radios carrying traffic for specific customers, in order to generate customized availability reports for each customer. To improve response times for radios carrying traffic for important events. To improve callout response times for radios carrying traffic for emergency services. All logical containers are displayed in the Logical Container pane using a tree view, similar to the physical tree view. This tree view also supports severity propagation, where the service container takes on the highest severity of its elements.

In addition to the tree view, services are monitored using the flat map view. This view displays all service elements, and the service elements can be linked to represent traffic connections that exist between the elements.

Events and Event Management Event Performance Thresholding

Radio and Ethernet performance parameters are configured to generate an event whenever a preset threshold is exceeded. The user determines the threshold and the severity for the event.

Event Browsers
Events collected are presented in the event browser. The listings include event status, severity, type, object and a date and time. Users can right-click on an event and view expanded information about it, print it, acknowledge it, or clear it. To assist clarity, filter options allow unwanted information to be removed (hidden) from the display. Multiple displays of the events can be created, each with a different filter setting. Sorting allows event grouping by field types. An event log can also be saved or printed.

At the bottom of the screen, a color-coded severity count tab indicates the number of events of that severity. By clicking on one of the count tabs, an event browser can be opened to display only the events of the selected severity.

The maximum number is 15,000. Customized targeted event browser can be easily created and saved. They can target individual modules, devices, groups of devices or geographic regions.

Event Pre-Filtering
ProVision can pre-filter events. In pre-filtering, selected event types are blocked from appearing in the main event log, allowing users to focus on event types that are important to them. This can be done at any hierarchical level.

Radio Performance Data Collection and Viewing

Performance collection can be enabled for radio RSL and G.826 data. For most radios, 15-minute and daily data bins are collected. Ethernet radios can also have 5-minute bins saved. Seven days of both 5-minute and 15-minute bin data, and one months worth of daily data, is stored in the database by default. Both historical and trend views are available.

Temporary Halt All Events - Sleep

The Sleep feature enables a temporary halt on all event logging, for any selected device. For example, this feature can be used to avoid generation of unnecessary alarms while service personnel are on site.

Inventory Management and Reporting

Network-wide inventory management enables users to track valuable network assets including inservice network elements and spares inventory. It gives an opportunity to share inventory such as spares holdings, and do so across boundaries, which might be organizational or geographical. In this way MTTR may be lowered and the return on the investment in spares improved. Correlation between fault management activities and inventory management may also identify the need to retain more types of a certain spare than another. The information can be viewed before the report is produced and it can then be saved, or printed.

Fault Reporting
The fault report can be generated for the whole network or a selected group of radios. It provides information on the current status of the network/radios. This information includes: Date and time of report Radio name/s, site name/s and IP address/es Configuration summary Software versions Current commissioned status Active alarms and events

The information can be viewed before the report is produced and it can then be saved, or printed.

Advanced Event Management

Using expert knowledge, Advanced Event Management significantly improves fault detection and lowers MTTR.

Probable Cause and History

Expert knowledge systems analyse the network and suggest probable event causes and proposed actions. Current events are displayed in conjunction with historical occurrences of the same event on the same device; this allows the user to determine event trends and correlate against specific dates and times.

Automated Event Filtering

ProVision supports automatic event sorting, collating and summary so that the true cause of an event or series of events is identified.
