Social Media applications in community radios

Community radios provide social service Christian Bernard @christianoben KenTel

Application of social media in content creation and R&D

Co-creation of social insights, peer-to-peer research and new product development. crowdsourcing. Result based management(RBM) vs managing for development results (MfDR).

The crowdsourcing process in SIX steps

1. The Radio Identifies a topic of public concern 2. The radio broadcasts the topic questions online 3. The crowd submits their interpretation and contributions 4. The crowd vets the contents provided 5. The Radio analyses the content and identifies key themes that emerge 6. The Radio develops content for the topic of public concern and airs it on radio.

RBM vs MfDR
Effective reporting on development programs and projects require reliable information on whether they achieve their intended results. RBM is scored based on performance index of internal results weak when used alone MfDR will dwell on change in the development conditions of people.

MfDR is a shift in focus of performance measurement towards real improvements in peoples lives
It is a qualitative approach to data collection which is always.
Up to date Mostly honest Concrete N/B indicators for traditional monitoring should not be replaced entirely in favor of quality of change alone. Effective MfDR will cover RBM as well.

SO YOU HAVE DECIDED TO TRY SOCIAL MEDIA?:

What do you need to consider first

Social Media Policy

A well considered social media policy will help to direct your efforts and give your community radio station/program a clear voice An internal social media policy sets out how staff and volunteers are to interact with any of the station/programs social media profiles and an external policy sets out how you wish fans and followers to interact on your profiles.

Things to identify in internal social media policy

What is the main focus of your social media? Who will be responsible for the tone and content? Moderator. Do staff post as themselves or as the radio station? How will you deal with negative feedback/comments?

Things to identify in external social media policy

It can be useful to put your expectations or social media terms of service, as a policy or set of guidelines, on your website and in your social media profiles Explain to users of the platform what your expectations are in regards to their interaction with your social media profile Include information on what is not acceptable, for example blatant advertising on your Facebook timeline, abuse directed towards others, discriminatory language, etc

Example of external policy on facebook

The purpose of this Facebook community is to create a platform for communication, engagement and connection between our radio station, listeners, guests and the local community. We also aim to share interesting and informative content to all people interested in our radio station and community. We love to hear from everyone but please do not post blatant advertising on our Facebook page. We may delete these posts at our discretion and users who do this multiple times will be banned. This community is not about self promotion. We encourage the sharing of interesting comments, articles, photos and videos and we always encourage thoughts and opinions about our radio station and individual radio shows. We also encourage a diverse range of thoughts and opinions and insist that people are respectful in their interactions. People who use offensive, abusive or discriminatory language will be removed. We have worked very hard to build our community and we want to provide the most valuable content through our Facebook page. If youd like to know more please contact us.
