Teaching on the Run Blended Learning Format

Teaching on the Run (TOTR) program has been designed by the Tell Centre, University of Western Australia, to enable participants to build up confidence in applying the principles of teaching adults in the everyday work situation. In 2012, ClinEdSA supported 25 clinicians in SA to train as facilitators to deliver TOTR workshops using a blended learning format. Teaching on the Run Learning Outcomes Participants will: Discuss elements and strategies in the development of a learning plan Define different types of assessment, and recognise potential problems and how to approach management Explore active learning strategies Practice presenting and evaluating teaching Develop and practice structured frameworks for clinical teaching Develop and practice structured models of skills teaching Apply a framework for supporting learners Discuss strategies for problem prevention and management Workshop Content is made of six modules: Planning Learning Participants will learn how to plan for effective placements and: Define and identify the purpose of learning outcomes Recognise the importance of teaching and learning preferences Identify content of an educational history Develop a Learning Plan Discuss elements of the Learning Plan Discuss challenges and strategies for implementing the Learning Plan Clinical Teaching This workshop provides a framework for teaching and participants will be able to: Identify the benefits of teaching Explore adult learning principles and areas of learning Define SNAPPS for clinical reasoning Explore the positive critique method Practice clinical teaching and giving feedback Utilise the teaching framework: Set, Dialogue and Closure Increase confidence in teaching ability Skills Teaching Participants will learn of the Four-Step approach and: Define the cognitive elements of a skill Identify the features of a skill Examine the Four-step approach Explore the positive critique for giving feedback Practice the Four- step approach and giving feedback Discuss applying the Four step approach in the workplace Discuss competence and performance

Asessment Participants will learn how to effectively assess learners and: Identify elements of effective feedback Recognise when to give feedback Critique the feedback process Define different types of assessment Identify formative feedback experiences Build confidence with formative and summative assessment Recognise potential problems and how to approach management Supporting Learners Participants be trained how to address issues for learners who need support and

Recognise learner, supervision and system problems Identify flags for immediate action Analyse clinical placement scenarios Identify a framework for supporting learners Apply a framework for supporting learners Discuss strategies for prevention and management Increase confidence in dealing with difficult situations

Effective Group Teaching Participants will learn to address the considerations and challenges of group teaching and

Recognise a variety of effective group teaching methods Explore a framework for group teaching Identify strategies to evaluate teaching Recognise group size differences Explore active learning strategies Practise presenting and evaluating teaching

Assessment Criteria Participants will complete online modules prior to attendance and actively engage in activities, discussion and teaching during the workshop Required Information Participants will need to provide a current, active email address to ensure access to online modules. Pre attendance work must be completed prior to the workshop Evaluation Participants at ClinEdSA funded workshops are invited to complete pre training surveys, pre/post workshop evaluation and follow up phone interviews to establish the benefits training. ClinEdSA works with the Tell Centre to minimise duplication.
