Power Consumption Calculation

Sensible Heat Load due to cooling of ambient air to 22.22 C and internal heat load at peak hours.

Let ambient temperature be Tambient Mass flow rate of air =77 kg/s Specific heat Capacity of air=1 kJ/kgC Let the temperature of air be Thx after using the spiral heat exchanger. Let internal Heat Load of the system be Q. This air is cooled to a temperature T below 22.22C so that the Mass flow rate of air *Cp*T + Q= Mass flow rate of air*Cp*22.22 The air from the heat exchanger has to to be cooled to T. So net effective Heat Load(for one floor)=77*Cp*( Thx T)

During winters the peak amount of heat used for heating the air =155 kW. There are two cases in heat extraction 1.During summers when the heat load is positive ,heat has to be extracted from the system. The minimum temperature upto which ambient air has to be cooled (peak heat load condition) =20C Temperature of ambient air after HX at this time =26C This heat has to be extracted by the cold water which is brought into the building from the air conditioning plant. T entry of cold water=14C T exit of water from building=18C Mass flow rate of water at peak condition at one floor=22.14 kg/s This water from the buildings has two paths either it enters directly into the air conditioning plant or enters the PCM storage tank. Temperature difference approach for evaporator and condenser=5C Temperature of the evaporator =9C Temperature of condenser=T ambient +5

Phase Change Materials Usage Details

The Phase change Material serves three important functions 1.It saves a lot of money by storing the heat energy and using the air conditioning plant when the tariff rates are very low. 2.It also helps in reducing the total capacity of the installed system by storing the heat energy at peak load conditions. 3.The air conditioning plant is operated during the night during which temperatures are low and thus compressor power consumption is reduced as condenser temperature is reduced. The peak installed heat extraction capacity of a plant is 1750 kW and if the heat load increases more than this value the heat energy will be stored in the PCM at any time of the day. The air conditioning plant will be shut down from 5 pm to 10 pm and all heat energy will be stored in the PCM.

Conventional Air conditioning and PCM is used if Heat Load>1750 kW

All the Heat is stored in the PCM

PCM is again converted back into solid by conventional air conditioning
