This theme is an opportunity for children to develop a sense of their own personal identity, as well as learning to appreciate that their new classmates and wider school community are also special.

Summer-Childrens Choice
In this topic we ask children to select what they are most interested about. They also have the opportunity to discuss this on the VLE. Our curriculum adapts to the interests and needs of the individual classes. This is our opportunity to integrate all of our learning into a topic led by the children.

This theme encourages the children to reflect on how they grow and change. We discuss our senses and what makes us special. We explore the locality of Highwoods and where we live.

Spring Term- If You Go Down To The Woods...


In this theme we learn about our environment and how we can improve it. We make our own maps and write ideas for improving the school site. We learn about the materials that we use around the house and how to reduce, reuse and recycle. Children are encouraged to bring in a different material each week.

Success outcomesRE We explore and discuss the wonders of the natural world, learning about the creation stories of different faiths and cultures. Science We collect, sort and describe man-made and natural materials.

Spring Term- Paint A Rainbow

This lovely creative theme focuses on art, artists, colour and light. We learn that dark is the absence of light and how to stay safe in the dark. We celebrate different festivals of light, including Christmas where we learn about Jesus as the light of the world.
Success OutcomesScience Learn about sources of light and that the Sun is the main source of light for the Earth. PSHE Explore how colours can affect and describe our moods and feelings. RETo research how different faiths and cultures celebrate festivals of light, including Christmas! ArtTo research the techniques of an artist (Matisse) and use this as a basis for our own art work.

Summer Term- Playtime

This theme is all about our toys our favourite toys, things children played with in the past, we create our own toy museum and enjoy a History off the Page workshop.
Success OutcomesScience Visit a playground to explore forces and how things are made to move and stop through pushes and pulls. History Explore and describe a range of historical artefacts; asking historical questions about who these toys may have belonged to and how our toys have changed. Autumn Term 1 Superheroes This unit explores a range of superheroes and their powers. It encourages children to use their imagination and role play skills to stimulate creative writing.

Autumn Term 2 Real Life Heroes In this unit, children research a real life hero and explore the role of the emergency services and other important people in society.

This is a shorter unit as the children begin rehearsals and production for the Christmas nativity production. They acquire key skills in a different context including; speaking and listening, patience, tolerance, team work, independence, building self esteem and taking pride in their achievements.

Spring Term- Traditional Tales This unit explores a range of fairy tales and nursery rhymes supporting childrens understanding of these important traditional tales and the significant role they play in encouraging childhood creativity.

This unit is focused on the Great Fire of London and how it impacted the people and future of London.

Children learn about how to live and eat healthily, the different food groups and how to incorporate this into their daily lives.

Spring World War II


Learning about the history and events of World War II focussing on life on the Home Front. This theme incorporates a trip to Duxford Imperial War Museum.

Life on the ocean waves! In this theme, children explore sources of water and investigate how rivers, gorges and waterfalls are formed. Children also investigate endangered sea life and explore ways to help preserve these vulnerable species. ICT: To know where to look for information and present facts through a power point;

Geography: Look at images and videos of waterfalls, gorges and rivers and find out about how they are formed and change over time; Describe what places are like, using photographs, videos and their own experiences; Art:

Children will discuss work from Claude Monet and create their own paintings based on these, using water colours, paint and pastel. To record from first hand experience and imagination, sketching endangered sea creatures; To work in teams to make underwater sea creatures using 3D paper sculptures. DT: To design, improve and make sea creatures through sewing; Children explore materials for sewing, selecting appropriate ones based on sensory qualities. Dance: To collaborate with others to create a dance that explains the journey of water from mountains to the ocean. RE:

Call the police!! This theme requires children to investigate a crime at Highwoods! Children create and use databases to identify suspects, and prepare and ask questions, collect evidence and analyse data. History: To recognise that crime scenes were very different in the past; To explore how crimes were solved in the past and attempt some of these techniques ICT: To use create and enter information into a database; To use a database to locate specific information.
