To Understand Anterior Guidance It is First Necessary to understand Posterior Guidance

Menu

<

Posterior Guidance
Guidance of the Mandible as dictated by the Anatomy of the Temporomandibular Joint

Menu

<

Posterior Guidance

Anterior Guidance
Guidance of the Mandible as dictated by the Contacts of the Teeth

Menu

<

Anterior Guidance
Guidance can be on Any Teeth

Anterior Guidance
Refers to Guidance by Teeth as distinct from Guidance due to the Temporomandibular Joint

Menu

<

Anterior Guidance
is not Necessarily on Anterior Teeth

Menu

Anterior Guidance depends on

The Positioning of Teeth within the Arch Irregularities of Teeth The Arch Relationships

as determined by Arch Relationships

Class 1 Jaw Relationship

When the Lower First Molars are Slightly Distal to the Upper First Molars

Class 11 Division 1

When the Lower First Molars are More Distal to the Upper First Molar Teeth

Class 11 Division 2

When the Lower First Molars are More Distal to the Upper First Molar Teeth

and the Upper Incisors are inclined Backwards

The Overbite

The Greater the Overbite

The Steeper the Anterior Guidance and the Greater the Degree of Separation of the Back Teeth

Class 111 Jaw Classification

When the Lower First Molars are Mesial to the Upper First Molar Teeth

Guidance can Never be on the Front Teeth

Guidance is always on Posterior Teeth

Centric Occlusion

This is the Right Side of the Mouth

Moving to the Right

Moving to the Right

This is a Functional Movement

If Red Articulating Silk is placed between the Teeth

and the Patient Moves in Right Lateral Movement

The Anterior Guidance can be studied

Canine/First and Second Premolar and First Molar Guidance

otherwise known as Group Function

Group Function
Separation of the Group of Teeth by Several Teeth preferably further forward

Uses of Group Function

When it is already present and there are no adverse effects present When Distribution of Excursive Stresses is advisable

Such as
Presence of Bone Loss around Teeth Extensively Restored Teeth Loss of Bony Support around Canine Tooth

Presence of Canine Wear Presence of Anterior Porcelain Crowns

First and Second Premolar Guidance

If the Canine is Outstanding this Guidance may be Necessary

Satisfactory if both Teeth are involved in the Guidance

Second Premolar, First and Second Molar Guidance

Satisfactory if Teeth further forwards are Loose

May occur in Class 11 Division 1 and Classs III Jaw Relationships

If the Canine is Loose

The Posterior Contact may be useful

If the Canine has Good Bone Support this Contact is an Interference

In Most Situations this would be considered an Interference

In Most Situations this would be considered an Interference

Reducing This Contact allows Guidance on Teeth further forward
