GCMMF (AMUL) is a company where the raw material as well as the finished product is perishable. It is one of the very unique cases where production is a function of both raw material supply and finished product demand. In 1994, amul was one of the frontrunners to implement TQM philosophy. With the twin pillars of customer focus and continuous improvement, GCMMF introduced the concept of TQM. It encapsulated all the concepts a wide array of philosophies including employee involvement, lean management etc. Kaizen, a concept of continuous improvementwas launched in 1995.

The Amul Model of dairy development is a three-tiered structure with the dairy cooperative societies at the village level federated under a milk union at the district level and a federation of member unions at the state level. The three-tier structure was set up in order to delegate the various functions, milk collection is done at the Village Dairy Society, Milk Procurement & Processing at the District Milk Union and Milk & Milk Products Marketing at the State Milk Federation. This helps in eliminating not only internal competition but also ensuring that economies of scale are achieved. Responsible for Marketing of Milk & Milk Products Responsible for Procurement & Processing of Milk Responsible for Collection of Milk Responsible for Milk Production 1.Village Dairy Cooperative Society (VDCS)

The main functions of the VDCS are as follows:

The customized ERP- EIAS has been implemented across the organization integrating various operational departments. Amul is also using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for business planning and optimization of collection processes The Amul model has helped India to emerge as the largest milk producer in the world. More than 13 million milk producers pour their milk in 1,28,799 dairy cooperative societies across the country. Their milk is processed in 176 District Co-operative Unions and marketed by 22 State Marketing Federations, ensuring a better life for millions.

Supply chain of Amul Practices (competency) followed for excellence in SCM: Codification of raw material in an easy to understand manner: Raw material codification is an extremely vital area often neglected. Proper codification is the basis for an efficient and smooth information flow throughout the system. Be it knowledge about how much is available and where is it available to who has supplied the raw material to where will it be used and when. So much information is dependent on this vital data. As there are 2.2 million farmers, it is essential to codify all these farmers to keep the information generated by them under control. Each farmer is a part of a VDS. Hence each farmers house number along with the VDS number is the code for each of the farmer. Payment to the milk suppliers on time and whenever they need itSupplier satisfaction on account of proper timely payments is one of the most essential aspects of relationship building. The best practice is to have so much trust in your supplier that after he has supplied the material pay him as and when he needs it in the form he needs it. Amul is one organization which is completely flexible in this respect. It provides the monetary comfort and thus is regarded as a family wherein each family feels comfortable with the relationship. Quality checks at every level: Automatic checks at every level from collection from the farmers to the manufacturing of all finished products ensures the quality remains standard at all phases through which the product moves
