1920s Radio Lesson Plan

Name: Hannah Rajkovich Class/Subject: 8th grade U.S. History Date: 10/29/12 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: The students will produce their own radio show based on their knowledge of the 1920s radio and its impact on society.

Content Standards: NCSS Standard 8: Science, Technology and Society

Materials/Resources/Technology: PowerPoint, Smartboard, Paper

Teachers Goals: The impact that the radio had on American society in the 1920s will be evident to the students by the end of the lesson.

Time

2 minutes

Start of Class: Ask students how they obtain information today. Then ask follow up question, How do you think people received information in the 1920s? Do you think the information people received was that fast before the 1920s? , How did people find out about information before the radio?, Why do you think the radio was this important? These questions will lead into me telling the students It is important to understand How the invention and use of the radio impacted our lives today. I think it is Important that as a class we look into the beginning of the radio and people used it then, and its impact on our society now.

Introduction of Lesson: Show PowerPoint and tell students that today we will be learning about the uses of the radio in the 1920s and how it helped to Shape the pop culture of the 1920s. People from across the country could receive the same information at the Same time. Therefore, the country could experience a national phenomenon at the same time Tell the students this statement.

15 minutes

Lesson Instruction: Go through the PowerPoint with the students Ask students questions along the way to engage them in the information being presented: Does the news still broadcast this type of information? Do you think the Radio shaped this part of the news broadcast today? Do you think Babe Ruth helped the rise of popularity in the radio? What are Some examples of national heroes in our media? Do you think that was possible Without the formation of the radio?

Assessments/Checks for Understanding: Assign students into groups of 3-4 depending on what students are seated close to each other. Tell them they will be writing their own radio show (it can be news, sports, Political, etc.) Ask students to write their show down and the names of the people in the Group. This shows ideas we discussed in class and Incorporates how the radio was used in pop culture.
