Devaney Senior Capstone, Period 2 6 February 2013 Hashoo Foundation: Education for a Better Future through Economic Stability A Capstone Proposal I. Introduction For the past few months my parents have been arguing a lot, its as if the eighteen years they of love that once brought them together left their heart a long time ago, and theyre a just left with the habit of seeing each other every day. As a result of this my mom is seriously thinking about separating from my dad. If this happens Ill leave with my mom, that way I can help her even though I know this will make it harder for me to go to college. My mom has never worked since she married my dad, she never finished high school she stopped on her freshmen year, she does not speak any English which of course is going to make it difficult for her to get a job, and if she does I know it is not going to be a well paid job and eventually Ill have to work more hours so we can satisfy our needs such as rent, food, etc.

I know that many people go through this, here in the U.S. and all around the world, but I also know that it tends to be harder in less developed countries. A few weeks ago Cristal Montanez Baylor, Executive Director of the Hashoo Foundation, came to school and talked about her organization that helps women from Pakistan to have a stable job, and how this helps kids to go to school. I thought of this as a good opportunity to help women, they might not be going through the same things as my mom, but this will eventually help their kids to stay in school, as Kofi Annan said Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family (United Nations).

Since my argument is education for a better future through economic stability, I believe that by helping women in Pakistan to get stable jobs, Im also helping their kids, because the more economically stable a family is, the more the chances are of their children to stay in school and go to college.

The biggest challenges I will face are to get people to volunteer on the carwashes and to reach my goal of fundraising $500 that will be donated to the Hashoo Foundation, that way the people that got affected in the past winter, is able to buy new beehives, which

Escobar 2 each cost $106. I will also volunteer and recruit juniors to volunteer in the local refugees; we will go to the refugees once a week.

This Capstone will teach me how to think globally, and to be aware of whats going on around the world, it will also help me to be college ready by improving my writing skills and speaking skills, since Ill have to be writing good research papers, and also trying to get people to come out and volunteer to achieve my goal of raising $500.

My Capstone will consist of the three possible forms: my argument paper, my volunteering and fundraising, and finally my presentation at the end of the semester. I will for sure turn in my final proposal on time; there are no excuses for that, in every possible way I will give my best effort to achieve my goal of fundraising $500. The final part from my Capstone will be to have a presentation that will show how much Ive worked for what Ive achieve by the time of the presentation.

On the day of the presentation, my audience will consist of Ms. Devaney, Mrs. White who is my sponsor, and my fellow classmates that are willing to see my presentation.

To complete my capstone I will need to:

Escobar 4 The biggest conflict that I think Ill be facing is to be able to write a good college-ready research paper, and be able to give a good presentation, because I am not confident about my English speaking skills.
