Executive Summary
In todays highly competitive bearing market, the marketing strategies adopted by companies are of highly aggressive type. Thus it becomes very essential for the marketer to understand the constant change in the behavior of the market.

Today companies that are competing in the market prefer to adopt more of a selling concept rather than a marketing concept for the selling and distribution of their products.

My assignment in this project was to survey dealers / distributors / retailers on behalf of Hub Bearings, Jharkhand as its summer trainee.

This report is compiled in for the purpose of the necessary requirements to the completion of the term paper and presentation which is a part of the management studies.

Apart from theoretical analysis, we have also stated in this project, our survey report during the period.

With the immense help and guidance from the experts in this field we have been able to complete the project in this particular topic.

PREFACE
As a part of MBA we have to undergo summer training for 45 days (6weeks) in an Organization where we are to be exposed to the practical aspects of business world. We did my summer project at Tata Steel. We had to conducted market survey of dealers in various regions of mainly Dhanbad & Jamshedpur (Jharkhand). To get the realistic view about the subject we had under gone various jobs, which are done by the company. We were given a complete access to all the work so as to get the practical knowledge. Moreover, we are given a chance to share some new ideas and concept, which was newly applied by the company. The primary and secondary data was collected from the various customers. And the findings & suggestions were based on my own questionnaire. So I hope these were very helpful for the company.

Research Tool- a questionnaire

Questionnaire development is an important part of the market survey job. It is an art that calls for a lot of expertise and resourcefulness on the part of the researcher. The questionnaire should be structured so as to collect all relevant information. It often sets the framework as well as the tone of the survey. The research data is build up on the framework of the questionnaire. If the questionnaire is faulty, it will generate incorrect information and no amount of analysis and interpretation can set it right. The choice of words in the questionnaire should also be appropriate and should be easily understood by all respondents.

Nuances of questionnaire development

As a general principle, the questionnaire should be as simple as the subject of the survey permits. It should be brief and to the point, forming a logical sequence. Questions should be broken into component parts so as to cover a single idea. Leading and misleading questions should be avoided. Questions, which respondents cannot answer properly, should be avoided. The questions in a survey questionnaire usually belong to one or the other of the following types. Open ended questions. Close ended questions.

Objectives - The work being all about

During our training period we are mainly assigned 5 distinct objectives:

To Know the dealer, distributor, retailers about the various types of products produced by Hub Bearings. Various dealers, distributors of other Hub Bearings to take dealership, distributorship of Hub Bearings. dealer, distributor, retailer about the goodness and benefit of selling this particular brands product. Taking the comments, interests of dealer, distributor, and retailer. Quoting the order, comments, and interests to the Area Sales Manager.

10

Scope of the study

Marketing starts with market research and ends with market research. To start any new business, first we should check if there is demand of the product, we are offering. Who are competitors? What is the position of the competitors? What is the financial position? What are the strategies of the Competitors and what are our strategies? For all theses answers and many more, market research is very important. Before investing any amount of money in the market, market research is a must. With every increase in the complexities, marketing in business activity carrying out research relating to Customers, products and market also becomes equally complex, necessating specialized skill and sophisticated techniques. This resulted in emergence of market research as a specialized subject of marketing management. Market research plays a key role in the entire marketing process. It helps the firm in marketing measurement, assessment of market potential and development of sales and forecast. It also helps the firm acquire a better understanding of the customer and the marketing environment. It aids the Formulation of marketing mix. As a matter of fact, decision making of each element of marketing mix, like products and services mix, distribution mix, promotion mix and pricing policy relies heavily on market research finding.

11

Methodology
In this descriptive Research design, a structured questionnaire has been used as the data collection instrument from a convenience sample of various dealers/ distributors. The sample size of 50 is taken for the purpose of research. Moreover, interviews were conducted by me on a face-to-face basis. There was a number of secondary data provided by the executives which helped me in studying the matter in details. The methodologies applied for successful completion of the project are: Primary Sources of Data Collection (i) Personal Interview and Contact: - we established personal contact with Experienced workers, top management, and executives to obtain necessary information. (ii) Questionnaires: - For the purpose of collecting data and information Questionnaires were prepared. (iii) Findings: - Findings includes vision as its main means of data Collection. Different worker at work, their attitude, behavior and Knowledge is noticed here. (iv) Sample Size: - The total numbers of employees surveyed are 60 and The employees are surveyed on a personal basis through the help of Structured questionnaire Secondary Sources of Data Collection

(i) Files and Documentary Sources: - Data were collected from each of
the concerned departments from files and documentary sources.

12

Limitations
The study has been completed in 45 days; this is not sufficient time to do a survey in entire North East Region. The sample size chosen is limited to 50 dealers & distributors; the study may not be applicable to the total market. Hence the data collected may not be a representation of the entire population. There is a possibility of biased answer from the respondents; hence the information collected might not be an accurate one. The study has been done in certain areas in Dhanbad & Jamshedpur. The findings are regional and do not represent the state or country. As the market being very huge it was not possible to cover each and every area.

13

Industrial Profile
The global bearing market is generally seen as the worldwide sales of rolling bearings, comprising ball and roller bearing assemblies of various designs including mounted bearing units. SKF estimates that the global rolling bearing market increased in local currency between5 and 10% in 2011 over the previous year, to between SEK 310 and 320 billion. The automotive original equipment bearing markets, including two- and three-wheelers, accounted for slightly more than 30% of world demand. The industrial original equipment bearing markets accounted for almost 40% of world demand and included manufacturers of light and heavy industrial machines and equipment as well as aerospace, off-highway and railway vehicles. Sales through distributors (industrial distribution and the independent vehicle aftermarket) make up around 30% of world bearing demand, of which around 25% is related to the vehicle service market and around 75% to the industrial market. Asia currently accounts for almost 50% of the world bearing market, compared with less than 30% ten years ago. China has been growing rapidly over the last few years supported by the expansion of its domestic railway infrastructure and a robust demand in renewable energy and now accounts for more than 25% of the world bearing total. Japans share of the world bearing market has been declining, and domestic Japanese bearing demand now accounts for less than 15% of the world total. Other Asian markets with bearing production and showing significant growth in recent years include India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Republic of Korea. The Chinese bearing market, which is the largest and fastest growing of the emerging markets, is very fragmented with the main international bearing companies accounting for about one third of the market while the other two thirds of the market consists of a host of local manufacturers. Some of the largest include: Wafangdian (ZWZ), Luoyang (LYC), Harbin (HRB), Zhejiang Tianma (TMB), Wanxiang
14

Qianchao, and C&U. The Indian bearing market has been growing at the same pace as the Chinese market and now accounts for about 5% of the world bearing market. The players in that market include international manufacturers and several local manufacturers such as NEI, NRB, ABC and TATA. Europe accounts for less than 25% of the world market total with Germany alone accounting for almost 10%. The Americas now represent less than 25% of global demand, of which the USA, Canada and Mexico together account for about 80%. In South America, Brazil is the major market and makes up more than 60% of regional demand. SKF is the world leader on the market for bearings and other major international companies here include: the Schaeffler Group, Timken, NSK, NTN, and JTEKT. Radial deep groove ball bearings are the most common rolling bearing type, accounting for almost 30% of world bearing demand. Other major ball bearing types include angular contact ball bearings, self-aligning ball bearings, thrust ball bearings and automotive wheel hub bearing units accounting for more than 10% of total world bearing market. Roller bearings account for less than half of world bearing market. Roller bearings are named after the roller shape, such as cylindrical roller bearings, needle roller bearings, tapered roller bearings and spherical roller bearings. All of these are available for loads acting across the shaft (radial bearings) and for loads that are parallel with the shaft (thrust bearings). There are also bearings that contain both balls and rollers simultaneously. The largest roller bearing family is the tapered roller bearing, with almost 20% of the world bearing market.

24

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
Global Steel industry The current global steel industry is in its best position in comparison to last decades. The price has been rising continuously. The demand expectations for steel products are rapidly growing for coming years. The shares of steel industries are also in a high pace. The steel industry is enjoying its 6th consecutive years of growth in supply and demand. And there is many more merger and acquisitions which overall buoyed the industry and showed some good results.

The subprime crisis has lead to the recession in economy of different countries, which may lead to have a negative effect on whole steel industry in coming years. However steel production and consumption will be supported by continuous economic growth.

The countries like China, Japan, India and South Korea are in the top of the above in steel production in Asian countries. China accounts for one third of total production i.e. 419m ton, Japan accounts for 9% i.e. 118m ton, India accounts for 53m ton and South Korea is accounted for 49m ton, which all totally becomes more than 50% of global production. Apart from this USA, BRAZIL, UK accounts for the major chunk of the whole growth.

25

The world steel industry outlook is promising with production seen rising to 1.5 billion tones in 2009, up from 1.4 billion tones, in 2008. The future outlook for the worldwide steel industry is very good. Demand is also seen growing with apparent steel use expected to total 1.282 billion tones this year, up 6.7 percent from 2007, according to data from the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI). Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) were leading growth with an expected increase of 11.1 per cent for 2008 and 10.3 percent for 2009. China's apparent steel use is expected to grow by over 10 percent in 2008 and by 10 percent in 2009. China accounted for 35 percent of the world total this year.

In the European Union a total of 210 million tons of steel were produced in 2007, up 1.6 percent from the previous year. World steel production capacity is seen increasing by nearly 19 percent between 2007 and 2010. The steel industry has undergone a few structural changes in the past 3-4 years. So, the outlook for the next few years is likely to be driven by the kind of consolidation that has taken place in the past few years. The other factor that is likely to affect outlook is the extent of demand emerging from BRIC countries. In addition to these two major factors, a cost-push is coming from raw material suppliers. Hence, steel manufacturers have to contend with strong demand on one hand, and cost-push on the other. The outlook for the domestic industry looks bright, since India has good iron ore deposits skilled manpower and growing demand for steel.
26

There is an apprehension that if China slows down, it may dump its surplus steel into India. An analysis of global data shows that even if an economy slows down, steel consumption does not fall dramatically. In the case of China, a slowdown can mean that the growth rate may fall from 19-20% to a lower level. But that doesnt mean growth will not take place. China produced around 470 million tons (mt) of steel last year, out of which, 66 mt was exported and the rest was consumed within the country. The measures undertaken by the Chinese government recently will reduce exports significantly in the current year. There is also a change in the consumption pattern. For instance, if construction activity slows down, the consumption of white goods will pick up and demand for flat steel products will go up. The new capacities coming up in China are on the flat products side and not on the long products side. Overall, the impact on the supply side will be less. Similarly, the cost of production is very high it costs around $500 per ton to produce more than 100 mt of steel in China. Since the cost of production is very high and exports are not allowed, many of these plants will be closed down by 09-10.This will reduce the supply of steel. Theres a feeling that India doesnt have much iron ore, considering the recent capacity expansion plans of domestic and foreign steel companies in India. There is a possibility that if we continue exporting iron ore, we may run out of reserves. Currently, we export 90-100 mt ever y year and this is steadily increasing. Ideally, we should increase our steel production capacity we are a net importer of steel so that rather than exporting iron ore, we can add value to it.

India should also look at investing in exploring new mines.

27

Indian Steel Industry-An Overview

India has traditionally been one of the major producers of steel in the world. Till the 1990s the steel industry of India was regulated and controlled by government policies. After the economic reforms of the early 1990s, the Indian steel industry has evolved significantly to conform to India has set a vision to be an economically developed nation by 2020. The steel industry is expected to play a major role in India's economic development in the coming years. The steel industry of India has a very high growth potential and is expected to register significant growth in the coming decades. India is expected to emerge as a strong force in the global steel market in coming years.

28

The two major aspects that are expected to play a significant role in the growth of the steel industry in India are Construction Housing Ground transportation Hi-tech engineering industries such as power generation, petrochemicals, fertilizers The current scenario of the Indian steel industry indicates that there is huge growth potential in this industry. The per capitaconsumption of steel in India, according to latest available estimates, is only 29 kg. This is much less compared to the global average of 140kg. The per capita consumption level of developed nations like the United States of America is 400kg. In this respect, one of the major initiatives that need to be taken is to focus on increasing the consumption of steel in the rural areas of India. The potential for the growth of consumption of steel in the rural areas of India for purposes like rural housing, rural infrastructure, etc is high which needs to be tapped efficiently. In order to realize the growth potential in the steel industry of India, it is essential to ensure that the industry can remain competitive. One of the major aspects in this regard is the availability of inputs. Shortage of inputs like coke has led to increase in costs earlier. Moreover proper infrastructure facilities like transport infrastructure, power etc are of prime importance in maintaining the competitiveness of the industry. This has helped in the growth of Indian steel industry. The industry recorded the highest growth rate in the period from 2004-2005, when the growth rate of the steel sector was 4%. The increased consumption of the finished steel products in the domestic market acted as a positive catalyst in the growth process of the Indian steel industry. The favorable market condition has helped the companies operating.
29

Indian steel industry to expand their operations and earn huge profit. India continually posts phenomenal growth records in steel production. In 1992 India produced 14.33 million tones of finished carbon steels and 1.59 million tones of pig iron. Furthermore the steel production capacity of the country has increased rapidly since 1991-2008, India produced nearly 46.575 million tones of finished steels and 4.393 million of pig iron. Both primary and secondar y producers contributed their share to this phenomenal development, while these increases have pushed up the demand for finished steel at a very stable rate. In 1991, a substantial number of economic reforms were introduced by the Indian government. These reforms boosted the development process of a number of industries the steel industry in India in particular which has subsequently developed quite rapidly.
In 1992, the total consumption of finished steel was 14.84 million tones . In 2008, the total amount of domestic steel consumption was 43.925 million tones. With the increased demand in the national market, a huge part of the international market is also served by this industry. Today, India is in seventh position among all the crude steel producing countries. The top companies of the Indian steel sector mostly operate in four different forms like producers of pig iron, producers of stainless steel, producers of finished steel products, and producers of semi-finished steel. The companies functional in the steel industry of India are both public sector companies and private sector companies.
30

Some of the leading companies in Indian steel industry are as follows:

TATA STEEL (TISCO) : TATA IRON & STEEL COMPANY :
IRON & STEEL MANUFACTURER , PRODUCER AND SUPPLIER OF

WIRE RODS, BARS, AND STEEL FLATS. STEEL AUTHORITY OF INDIA: MANUFACTURER OF STEEL AND IRON JINDAL IRON &STEEL : PRODUCER OF GALVANIZED STEEL PROD BOKARO STEEL PLANT : STEEL MANUFACTURER. ESSAR STEEL : PRODUCER OF SPONGE IRON, STEEL AND IRON ORE PELLETS. JINDAL STEEL &POWER : MANUFACTURER OF MILD STEEL SLABS AND SPONGE IRON. VIZAG STEEL : PRODUCER OF PIG IRON AND STEEL.
The rate of production of steel in India has been going up at a steady rate in the last few years. In the recent times Orissa and Jharkhand have been identified as the potential steel destinations of India - the ones that would provide the Indian steel industry with its necessary raw material. There are also a number of steel companies in India like Tata and Arcelor -Mittal that are either coming up or have established themselves as prominent forces in the world steel scenario. In the recent times a lot of foreign direct investment is being made in the Indian steel industry. In fact the rate of investment has increased in the last few years and, to a certain extent, this increase has been contributed to by the growth potential of the steel industry of India that is thought of as being impressive in the international steel circle. In the recent years a number of major steel corporations of the world have come flocking to India to avail the benefits of the flourishing steel industry of India. The number of steel projects in India has increased as well and this implies that the number of companies lining up to participate in these projects would be increasing too.

EAF (electric arc furnace) The capital costs involved in EAF is lower as compared to BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace). Modern EAF has features such as high transformer capacity, Oxygen lances, Oxy fuel burners, coal injection system, bottom purge holes, water cooled boxes above the slag line, water cooled roof, EBT (eccentric bottom tap hole), Charge hoppers with vibrators etc. to improve productivity. To reduce the power consumption, hot DRI (directly reduced iron) charging facility is available in modern furnaces.

EAF process uses predominantly scrap. DRI is used when the scrap is not available. A new process, which is known as CONARC has been developed by SMS- DEMAG. It employs hot metal, scrap and DRI to different proportions as per their availability.

BOF (ld Process)

BOF is a very widely used0 process and does not require external heat, as the process utilises the heat generated by the exothermic reactions during the melting operation. Hot metal and scrap are used for melting. Oxygen is blown through a multi-hole lance to carry out the refining operation. Modern converters have tueyers at the bottom through which Argon or Nitrogen gas is purged.

Instrumentation in LD has improved for better productivity. Developments include better multi-hole lances, improvement of blow profile by mathematical models, and use of Mag-carb bricks to improve the lining life.

Some of the developments in steel making process at Tata Steel include a) Stack temperature measurements, b) suitable flux practices, c) installation of sub lance, d) Development of SMART lance, e) practices to avoid the converter slag in to steel ladle at the time of tap, f) Auto alloy additions, g) bottom purging of steel ladle etc.

Secondary refining technology for the production of special grade steels has been introduced. This includes Ladle refining, CAS, Vacuum refining such as RH and Stream Degassing, AOD and calcium treatment etc.

Continuous Casting Technology Continuous casting technology has replaced ingot technology, resulting in higher yield and a substantial increase in productivity and quality. Thin slab casting and strip casting have also been developed to reduce overall CAPEX cost of steel production.
41

Hot Rolling Technology:

Developments in Hot rolling technologies include:

Some of the advancements in slab reheating technology include a) development of high capacity reheating furnaces, b) development of heat models, c) walking beam concept for uniform heating, d) atmosphere control (% Oxygen) during heating, e) multi fuel burners, f) development of tunnel furnace technology etc. Implementation of High performance descalers (Water pressure: 200 450 bar) for better removal of furnace scale prior to rolling.

Instituting Vertical Edgers and short stroke hydraulic cylinders for better width control of the finished product.

Development of Semi HSS and oil lubrication in improving the productivity and quality performance of the roughing stand of the hot strip mill.

42

Cold Rolling Technology:

Developments in Cold Rolling technologies include:

Introduction of heat shield, edge heating by Induction heaters prior to finish rolling, semi continuous rolling, coil box etc.

Some of the developments implemented in the finishing mill include:

o o o o

Continuously variable crown Roll bending / Roll shifting Mill lubrication to reduce the rolling load Use of HSS rolls for longer campaign life and better product surface quality

Inter-strand cooling Completely automated rolling with second level automation system

Sophisticated measuring house for width, thickness and flatness control

o o o

ROT cooling models Robust coilers for winding high strength steels CSP mills have been developed to roll wider / thinner gauge steels.

Surface Inspection System is present in hot strip mills to aid the inspection and quality certification process Ferritic rolling is a process technology, which has been developed to roll thin / soft quality grades.

43

Development of 6 HI mills for rolling coils with excellent shape control. These mills achieve heavy reduction per pass (higher productivity) with good thickness and flatness controls.

PLTCM (pickling line and Tandem Cold mill) converts hot rolled coils to cold rolls continuously in a very short period of time. High Productivity and good quality are achieved in these mills. The modern mills have auto shape and hydraulically controlled AGC (auto gauge control).

PLTCM has UC (universal crown) crown to achieve better flatness. Work rolls and the intermediate rolls are bent to obtain the desired roll gap profile.

Developments in Pickling Technologies:

Pickling facility is equipped with tension leveller to loosen the scale and improve the strip shape prior to pickling. Hot hydrochloric acid is used to obtain complete removal of surface scale of hot rolled coil prior to cold rolling. Some of the modern pickling lines use Turbo pickling to hasten the scale removal.

Single stand reversing mills are available for the production level of 200 000 TPA. Typical capacity of PLTCM is about 1.25 to 2.0 MTPA. The concept of twin stand mill has been developed to meet the intermediate production capacity around 0.4 0.8 MTPA.

The rolling mills use rolling oils (stable / metastable / unstable) of different quality depending on the mill design and product mix.
44

Modern pickling units are equipped with ARP (acid regeneration plant) to regenerate the acid thereby reducing pollution.

Single stand reversing mills are available for the production level of 200 000TPA. Typical capacity of PLTCM is about 1.25 to 2.0 MTPA. The concept of twin stand mill has got developed to meet the intermediate production capacity around 0.4 0.8 MTPA.

The rolling mills use rolling oils (stable / metastable / unstable) of different quality depending on the mill design and product mix.

Electrolytic cleaning line removes the rolling oil, which is present on the cold rolled surface. The facility helps to achieve clean and bright surface after cold rolling.

Developments in Annealing Technologies:

There are two types of annealing Batch Annealing and Continuous Annealing. Batch Annealing is chosen when the volume involved per size is small (fragmented orders).During annealing, a protective gas such as HNX (4-6% Hydrogen with balance nitrogen) or 100% Hydrogen is circulated between the coils and the protective cover to facilitate annealing. Pure Hydrogen is preferred in modern annealing furnaces because of superior heat transfer; higher annealing base productivity and good CR surface quality. Continuous annealing line generally has capacity 0.50 1.0 MTPA. Because of higher productivity, many integrated steel plants prefer continuous annealing. The mechanical properties and surface quality of CR coils are good and
45

consistent. If the CRM complex has PLTCM and CAL, the hot rolled coil is converted into CR in less than one hour.

High strength steels can be produced by only CAL process. Galvanising is a process by which the steel is coated by passing it through a molten zinc bath. The coating thickness is controlled by wiping with air or nitrogen, when the strip comes out of thezinc bath.

Zinc coating on steel prevents the corrosion of iron by sacrificial protection (Cathodic Protection).

FOUNDERS OF TATA STEEL

There is a difference between making money for oneself and creating wealth for others. This is a story of a business house that has created wealth for a nation. It is story of struggle, adventure and achievement. This the story of TATA STEEL PIONEERS.

JAMSHEDJI NUSSERWANJI TATA(1839-1904)

He was a visionary behind Tata Steel. He realized that Indian real freedom depend upon its self sufficiency in scientific knowledge , power and steel ,thus devoted the major part of his life, and his fortune to three great enterprises The Indian Institute of Science at Banglore ,the Hydro electric schemes and the Iron &Steel works at Jamshedpur. J.N Tata had exhorted to his sons to pursue and develop his lifes work : his elder son,Sir Dorabji Tata(1859-1933) carried out the bequest with scrupulous zeal and distinction . Thus , even though it was Jamshedji Tata who had envisioned the mammoth projects,it was in fact Dorabji Tata who actually brought the ventures to existence and fruition. He was the first chairman of the gigantic Tata Enterprises.

47

It was in 1907 that the village of Sakchi was discovered at the confluence of two rivers, Subarnarekha and Kharkhai and the railways station of Kalimati. The TATA IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY was floated.

SIR DORABJI TATA(1859-1933)

Sir Dorabji Tata (1859-1933) carried out the bequest with scrupulous zeal and distinction. Thus, even though it was Jamsetji Tata who had envisioned the mammoth projects, it was in fact Dorab Tata who actually brought the ventures to existence and fruition. He was the first Chairman of the gigantic Tata enterprises. He had a deep interest in people. The great labour strike in 1920 in Jamshedpur ended in a day due to his intervention. It demonstrated India could have no better employer of labour than Sir Dorab.

JEHANGIR RATANJI DADABHAI TATA(1904-1993)

J.R.D. Tata has been one of the greatest builders and personalities of modern India in the twentieth century. He assumed Chairmanship of Tata Steel at the young age of 34, but his charismatic ,disciplined and forward looking leadership over next 50 years led the TATA GROUP to new height of achievement , expansion and modernization. His style of management was to pick the best person for the job at hand and let him have the latitude to carry out the job.He was never interested for MicroManagement. It was he who zeroed in on Sumant Moolgaokar, the engineering genius who sussessfully steered our company for many years. He was a visionary
48

whose thinking as far ahead of his time, which helped Tata Group launching its own Airline, now known as Air India. He was awarded the countrys highest civilian honour, The Bharat Ratna in 1992.

RATAN NAVAL TATA Ratan Naval Tata was born on December 28,1937, in Surat. He is the present chairman of Tata Group , Indias largest conglomerate founded by Jamshedji Tata and consolidated and expanded by later generation of his family. He is one of the most well known and respected industrialists in India. Ratan Tata completed his degree in architecture with structural engineering from Cornell university in 1962, and the advance management Program from Harvard Business School in 1975. He joined Tata Group in December 1962 on the advice of JRD Tata. His achievement have been the acquisition of Corus Group ,and AngloDutch steel and aluminium producer. Literature Review
Philip Kotler (1994) define the marketing research asfunction that links the consumer, customer, and public to the marketer through information-information used to identify and define marketing opportunities and problems; to generate, refine, and evaluate marketing actions; to monitor marketing performance; and to improve understanding of the marketing process. Marketing research specifies the information required to address these issues, designs the methods for collecting information, manages and implements the data collection process, analyzes, and communicates the findings and their implications.. Briefly it is a systematic design, collection, analysis, and reporting of data and findings relevant to a specific marketing situation facing the company, allows management to make the changes necessary for better results through adopting a proactive approach. Therefore, if a company wants to know what type of products or services would be profitable it should make a market research. Furthermore, a comprehensive research will enable the company to know about the product imperfections (if there are) and to know if it has been able to satisfy customers needs. It attempts to provide accurate information that reflects a true state of affairs. Due to market research the company can formulate a viable marketing plan and estimate the success of its existing plan. There are two main sources of marketing research information: Primary marketing research is collected for the first time if the company has enough money to finance it, but in most case it is the second more accurate one. It is original and collected for a specific purpose, or to solve a specific problem. Primary research delivers more specific results than secondary research, more expensive and time consuming, which are an especially important consideration when the company is launching a new product or service. There are many ways to conduct primary research. By customizing tried-and-true approaches, focus groups, surveys, field tests, interviews or observation, you can gain information about your target market. Primary research is generally based on sampling techniques and requires statistical methodologies. The sample size could be as small as 1 percent of the market and thus the information and results gathered are highly accurate.
57

Secondary marketing research or desk research is generally used when a company considering, extending a business into new markets or adding new services or product lines, because it already exist in one form or another. This information is based on studies previously performed by government agencies, chambers of commerce, trade associations, and other organizations. There are number of sources available to the marketers, which are the following: Business libraries, Public records, Trade associations, Websites, National/international governments, Informal contacts and Professional institutes and organizations. That is why secondary research is relatively cheap, and can be conducted quite quickly. However, its main disadvantage is that the information gathered may be old and obsolete; therefore results of analysis may be inaccurate. Further, it is not necessary that the earlier studies were conducted with the same objectives as required in the current situation. According to Tom Owens (2008) Stages of research are the following:

1) Define the problem, define the research objective 2) Developing the plan for collecting information 3) Implementing the plan- Collecting and analyzing Data 4) Interpreting Data Reporting the Findings
Firstly, the decision problem faced by management must be defined clearly in form of questions that obtain the required information to make the decision. Secondly, the company will determine the research method - Surveys are typical, but could also include focus groups or 1-on-1 in-depth interviews. If using a survey, will it be by phone, mail, in-person, web, etc. Thirdly, the company should determine the sample size, to know how many surveys are needed to provide reliable information, track productivity and costs and resolve any obstacles that come up. Fourthly, analyzing data should be done by preparing summary statistics for each question, broken out by relevant subgroups if necessary. May include coding of open end questions and advanced statistical techniques. Finally, Report the results for example create graphs, charts and text that communicate the findings. Conclusions/recommendations should be actionable regarding the defined
58

problem. Hopefully it leads to a solution for the problem. Methodologically, marketing research uses four types of research designs, namely: Quantitative marketing research is about measuring a market and quantifying that measurement with data. Furthermore, it can be also used to measure customer awareness, attitudes and behavior in a market by taking a statistical sample of customers. Such techniques are extremely powerful when combined with techniques such segmentation analysis and mean that key audiences can be targeted and monitored over time to ensure the optimal use of the marketing budget. Most often the data required relates to market size, market share, penetration, installed base and market growth rates. This type of research is generally used to draw conclusions, uses random sampling techniques so as to infer from the sample to the population. It is convergent reasoning rather than divergent reasoning. The traditional empirical quantitative technique in market research is the survey questionnaire, administered to a stratified or random sample of a population. Finally, in market research, extensive use is made of sampling from which, through careful design and analysis, Marketers can draw information about the market. Qualitative marketing research means "quality and deals with processing data as words, emotions, feelings, emotions. Conversely, and importantly, it does not mean "quantity." Qualitative research methods are used to define a problem and generate hypotheses. These methods are designed to talk to a relatively few people in the target audience of interest that is why it is not generalize to the whole population. They are however, very valuable for exploring an issue and are used by almost all researchers. They can be better than quantitative research at investigation level in order to understand what drives and motivates behavior. Qualitative marketing research is generally used for exploratory purposes to plumb the depths and range of buyer attitudes and beliefs, project, or forecast quantity. Such as depth interviews, observational techniques: Depth interviews are the main form of qualitative research. Here an interviewer spends time in a one-on-one interview finding out about the customer's particular circumstances and their individual opinions.
59

Group Discussions is a consumer research method. Here several costumers are arranged to have a discussion with the researcher. Group discussions are rare in business markets, unless the customers are small businesses. Observational techniques: The researcher observes social phenomena in their natural setting. In detail, researchers go to customers environments to watch and interview people in context. Directly observing people and asking questions that refer to objects and actions at the site gives researchers a rich understanding of the issues customers face. Although, observations can occur cross-sectional (observations made at one time) or longitudinally (observations occur over several D3Time-periods). The main advantage of observational research is flexibility. The researchers can change their approach as needed. Also it measures behavior directly, not reports of behavior or intentions. Experimental techniques are used for the controlled testing of causal processes. The researcher create a quasi-artificial environment to try to control spurious factors, then manipulates at least one of the variables. It is commonly used for purchase laboratories, test markets and in social sciences such as sociology and psychology.Researchers often use more than one research design. The company should start with secondary research to get background information, and then conduct a focus group qualitative research design to explore the issues. Finally, the company might do a comprehensive survey quantitative research design in order to devise specific recommendations for the client.

Introduction to my assignment
The type of work that we are assigned to-

Working on this particular project we were assigned the job of surveying various dealers, distributors, retailers in the various regions of mainly Dhanbad & Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) This particular job was assigned to me by Tata steel where we had to coordinate with the Business Development of Tata Steel, Burma mines (Jamshedpur). In total regard to our job, we had to survey the dealers, distributors, retailers of other Hub bearings. and submit a daily report of our survey to the Business Development Tata steel Burma mines office(Jamshedpur) This was a Market Survey Assignment that we are given as a task. In this assignment we have been taught the entire process of the selling and distribution strategy that Hub bearings.

Findings
During the survey it was found that Hub bearings market is excellent . market is fresh and a couple of player are available in dhanbad & Jhamshedpur. Hub bearings is lacking brand awareness in some areas. Hub bearings is also lacking in distribution channel in some areas in Jharkhand, hence there is a problem of receiving the product in time. Sometimes the same product differ in another package.

64

Suggestion and recommendation

After conducting the survey data was subjected to analysis. On the basis of analysis and findings as explained in the previous pages, the following recommendations are being made in order to capture more market in Dhanbad & Jhamshepur. It may be noted that no single measure would be effective, but combination of various measures would definitely lead to capture more market. Further, it may be observed that capturing the market was not a serious concern in the given organization but there is scope for improvement. The following measures may be taken for improvement Advertisement: Hub bearings should go for different advertisement campaign, in order to aware the common people and remind them again and again about their presence in the market. Depot in Dhanbad & Jamshedpur: If the company makes a depot at the dealers can easily access the goods and encourage more parties to come up to take dealership. This is because it will reduce the transportation time and cost of new dealers. Improve distribution channel in NE: The distribution channel in Jharkhand needs to be developed further so that the products are available on time and on demand. Aggressive selling & distribution of wooden floor: Hub bearings can opt for aggressive selling & distribution of , as there are only a couple of rival players and the market is also fresh. Special promotional/ incentive scheme for Dealers & Distributers : As distributers are the major users of Hub bearings, so they must be provided with some promotional/ incentive scheme. This will lead to increase sales, as there are lots of competitors.

65

Conclusion
Market of Hub bearings in Jharkhand States is flourishing rapidly with different brands. Other local players of bearings are also enjoying the cream of the huge potential market. Hub bearings in the market hold an immense potential market. It requires good brand and availability. Skf is one of the best Hub bearings manufacturer in India and abroad. In the market, brand image of is very effective and trustworthy as because the products from Hub bearings are taken as guaranteed for the quality. Hence it poses a great potential to capture the bearings market. Even though there are great amount of sales of bearings in Jharkhand but according to the demand there is less supply of Hub bearings because of poor design of logistic and supply system. Therefore, to conclude my experience as a summer trainee at Tata steel it reveals that of Hub bearings has huge potential in Jharkhand market so Hub bearings should go for advertisement campaigns to promote sales and provide some incentive schemes for mass purchase by the seller & distributers further improve their logistic so that they can deliver in right time as per the demand of the retailer.
