BIOMASS- AN OVERVIEW

Biomass, the oldest form of renewable energy, has been used for thousands of years. However, with the emergence of fossil fuels, its relative share of use has declined in recent years. Currently some 13% of the worlds primary energy supply is from biomass, though there are strong regional differences. Developed countries derive around 3% of their energy from biomass. while in Africa the proportion ranges between 70% and 90%. With the adverse environmental effects of fossil fuels on the environment (such as climate change) coming to the forefront, people everywhere are rediscovering the advantages of biomass.

BIOMASS- AN OVERVIEW
The use of biomass as a fuel is considered to be carbon neutral because plants and trees remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and store it while they grow. Burning biomass in homes, in industrial processes, for energy generation, or for transport activities returns this sequestered CO2 to the atmosphere. At the same time, new plant or tree growth keeps the atmospheres carbon cycle in balance by recapturing CO2. This net-zero or carbon-neutral cycle can be repeated indefinitely, as long as biomass is re-grown in the next management cycle and harvested for use. The sustainable management of the biomass source is thus critical to Ensuring that the carbon cycle is not interrupted. In contrast to biomass, fossil fuels such as gas, oil, and coal are not regarded as carbon-neutral because they release CO2 which has been stored for millions of years, and because they cannot be stored or sequestered.

Source wise Installed capacity of Renewable power in India

Biomass based energy generation has significant potential to contribute to Indias growing energy needs. Technology has also significantly advanced and is being made available locally along with a host of financial incentives and policy measures being put into place to accelerate the investment in this sector. Briquette manufacturing plants Through Road Transport

Industrial Units (Steam / Power Generation)

This is one of the best substitutes to save the consumption of Fuel wood. Biomass briquettes are easy to handle, transport and store. Briquette available in uniform and sizes. This help to solve the residual disposal problem by its non hazardous nature. Pollution will be minimize by burning the fuel. Briquette is the low cost fuel in comparison of coal, fuel oil. Briquettes are sulfur free product. Briquette has a consistent quality, comparatively high calorific value, More uniform combustion in comparison of coal. Handling costs are less. Easy to burn.

Briquettes have high specific density (1200 Kg/m3) and bulk density (800 Kg/m3) compared to 60 to 180 Kg/m3 of loose biomass.

BOILER- CONVERT TO BIOMASS

biomass conversion refers to the process of converting biomass into energy that will in turn be used to generate electricity and/or heat. The principal categories of biomass conversion technologies for power and heat production are direct-fired and gasification systems. Within the direct-fired category, specific technologies include stoker boilers, fluidized bed boilers, and co firing. Within the gasification category, specific technologies include fixed bed gasifiers and fluidized bed gasifiers. Anaerobic digesters are also considered a biomass conversion technology Conversion Benefits Reduced cost of steam generation. Reduced Sulphure emisson. Reduced Carbon di oxide emission. Reduced NOX due to low combustion temperature Less sound pollution. Increase company image in surrounding areas. Inculcates waste to wealth culture Save foreign exchange
