Healthy Meal Title: Choose a Healthy Meal Description: In this lesson students will take what they have

learned over the last few weeks and put together a healthy meal. Knowing that a lot of my students eat fast food, they will be given ten items from a fast food restaurant. With the item and its nutritional values, they will choose the healthiest main dish, side, beverage and dessert. Through this activity, I will be able to assess the students on their knowledge of the materials being presented to them. Subject: Adult Living Instruction time: 60mins. Students level by grade: 9th-12th grade, Special Education Learning Objectives: Students will be able to identify what items are the healthiest after evaluating the nutritional value. Students will gain the knowledge and tools to enhance their eating habits outside the classroom.

Differentiated Instruction: For the students that need differentiated instruction, I will eliminate some of the food choices. The items that will be present will be dramatically different (the healthiest and least healthiest). This will allow them to make decisions but less stressful. Resources needed: McDonalds food items and nutrition value

Instructional methods: I will begin this lesson by recapping what we have learned over the last couple weeks. They will then be given their menu items. No two students will have the same group of food items. By doing this, they will not be able to look onto other students. This will give me a good idea of their understanding and allow me to see if we need to go back over. Lesson Sequence: Direct Instruction I will begin by recapping what we have learned about nutrition, what each component means and if it is good or bad.

Independent Practice Students will be given ten food items that are to be selected for the healthiest meal. After the students have chosen their healthiest food items, I will review them making sure that they are the healthiest choices. At this time I will be taking notes if they are not making the right decisions. I will guide them towards other food items and ask them to rethink. After all the students are done, they will present their menu to the class.
