John Chapter 14

Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
Let your heart be kept with full trust in God. The word your. However others are overwhelmed with the sorrows of this present time, be not you so. Christ's disciples, more than others, should keep their minds quiet, when everything else is unquiet. Here is the remedy against this trouble of mind, Believe. By believing in Christ as the Mediator between God and man, we gain comfort. All that saw Christ by faith, saw the Father in Him. When they saw Christ's miracles, they saw God as the God of power. The holiness of God shone in the spotless purity of Christ's life. We are to believe the revelation of God to man in Christ; for the works of the Redeemer show forth his own glory, and God in him.

Joh 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. Joh 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. Jesus gives the reason for His departure. He goes to prepare a place for us. As He promises to build a place for us, He also promises to return. Why will He return? That where I am, there ye may be also. What a comfort! Joh 14:4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Joh 14:5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Thomas didn't hear Jesus say where He was going. How could he know the way? It is surprising that Thomas didn't understand that Jesus spoke of Heaven. Jesus had just told of many mansions. Did Thomas think there was really a place like that on earth? Jesus has to break it down for Thomas. He spoke of going to the Father. Jesus tells Thomas, I am the way. Jesus is the highway, so to speak. He is the way to get to this mansion world. No man can get to the Father except through Jesus. Thomas knew Jesus, therefore Thomas knew the way.

Joh 14:7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Joh 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Joh 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Joh 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Joh 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. Again we see one of Jesus' disciples trying to look at the situation with natural eyes. Jesus has been trying to show His disciples the Father from the beginning of His ministry. You've seen me. Why do you ask to see the Father? (the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. ) Joh 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. Joh 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Joh 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. Joh 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. (MH)
The disciples, as they were full of grief to think of parting with their Master, so they were full of care what would become of themselves when he was gone; while he was with them, he was a support to them, kept them in countenance, kept them in heart; but, if he leave them, they will be as sheep having no shepherd. Now, to silence these fears, Christ here assures them that they should be clothed with powers sufficient to bear them out.

Jesus not only wrought miracles himself, but gave power to others to do so too. If we ask anything in His name, He will do it, As we show our love for Him by keeping His commandments. Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Joh 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for

he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. Joh 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Now Jesus leaves us with another precious gift, along with His word, to comfort us. He promises He Himself will abide with us through coming of the Holy Spirit. The world cannot receive the Spirit of Truth. Therefore The Comforter is for the believers only. The gift of the Holy Ghost is bestowed upon the disciples of Christ, and not on the world. This is the favour God bears to his chosen. As the source of holiness and happiness, the Holy Spirit will abide with every believer for ever. Joh 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. Christ will come to us in His Spirit; in the tokens of his love, and visits of his grace. His disciples have communion with him in his absence. Joh 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. Christ is in the bosom of the Father, in union with him, partaker of the same nature, perfections, and glory with him. AND we are to be in union with Him as the branches in the vine, and as the members are in the head. Joh 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Those who have the commandments of God written in their hearts (not just in their minds) and keep them, show their love for Jesus. Those who love Jesus are loved by God. The Son will manifest himself to such as love Him. Joh 14:22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. Joh 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

Judas couldn't see how Jesus could reveal things only to His followers without being seen by the world. This special privilege is confined to those whose faith worketh by love, and whose love to Jesus leads them to keep his commandments. God reveals things through His Spirit. Things of the spirit cannot be seen with the natural eye. Therefore, those who have God's Spirit will be able to see things that the world cannot see. Jesus just told them concerning The Spirit, for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. Those who have God's spirit have this revelation within them. Joh 14:25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. What a wonderful work the Holy Ghost has! He will dwell within us, comfort us, teach us(all things), and bring to our remembrance (all things) said by Christ. Joh 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. The words that start this chapter (Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled,) Jesus uses once more as He prepares to depart His disciples. MH The peace which Christ gives is infinitely more valuable than that which the world gives. The world's peace begins in ignorance, consists with sin, and ends in endless troubles; Christ's peace begins in grace, consists with no allowed sin, and ends at length in everlasting peace. Joh 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. Joh 14:29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Joh 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

Joh 14:31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence. Christ had not only told his disciples that he should depart from them in a little time, but also that he should return again to them, and comfort them with his presence, and receive them to himself, to be with him in his Father's house for ever. It was hard for the disciples to lose Jesus' bodily presence. They would miss Him. But in order to come in and make His abode within them with the Father, He had to go away. If the disciples could have only seen the victory ahead, they would have rejoiced. Jesus again was to be with the Father, whose right hand he was to sit, an honor which no mere creature ever had; where he was to be glorified and exalted above all created beings. If we could only see past the trial that we face. If we could see there is victory ahead. Perhaps we would rejoice. BUT we know ... Jesus is alive and is on the right hand of the Father making intercession for the saints. Rom_8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
