Time management in NEMU

Time management is required to guarantee data referentiality and functionality in the network. Time management in NEMU uses the NTP, which is an Internet standard and version 3 is defined in RFC-1305. NTP is a protocol built on top of UDP/IP that assures accurate local timekeeping with reference to radio, atomic, or other clocks located on the Internet. This protocol is capable of synchronising distributed clocks within milliseconds over long time periods. In the figure, the Nokia NetAct acts as an NTP server from which the MGW NEMU obtains the time. The MGW operation and maintenance unit (OMU) uses

NTP

to obtain the time from MGW NEMU.

The following figure gives an overview of time management in the network if NEMU is used to manage the MGW network element.

Figure 1 Time management architecture Daylight saving time in NEMU NEMU has built-in automation for setting Daylight Saving Time (DST) on or off. The setting can be found from Start -> Control Panel -> Date and Time -> Time Zone tab. Enable Automatically Adjust Clock for Daylight Saving Changes option when you want your computer's clock to automatically adjust for daylight saving time. Disable this option when you want the user to make the adjustment for daylight saving time. Note that the Automatically Adjust Clock for Daylight Saving Changes option does not switch daylight saving time on or off on the computer. It only controls whether a user or the computer itself adjusts the time for Windows during DST change.

NEMU clock shows wrong time

Description
NEMU clock shows wrong time. The reason for failure may be that: Time zone in NEMU is wrong Tardis service is not running or it has a configuration problem NTP server is not running, NTP server gives wrong time, or network connection to NTP server is not available

Symptoms
NEMU clock shows wrong time.

Recovery procedures
Checking why NEMU clock shows wrong time Steps 1 Check time zone in Windows a) Click Start -> Control Panel -> Date/Time. b) Go to Time Zone Page. Set the correct Time Zone. c) Check the time in the lower right corner of the Windows desktop. 2 Check status of Tardis service a) Click Start -> Control Panel -> Tardis 2000. b) If Tardis Main page has a Start service button, click it. c) Check that the Servers list has correct address for NTP time server. d) Change to Information page. Check from the 'Last time correction' date/time field that the time was corrected. e) If the time was not corrected, check the Application log from Event Viewer, if Tardis is writing any error messages, and proceed to step three. f) If the time was corrected but NEMU still has wrong time and the time zone in NEMU is correct, then the problem is in NTP time server. 3 Tardis service is working but time is not corrected a) Check network connection to NTP time server for example with the ping tool. b) If network connection is OK, check NTP time server.

Q. The NT/2000/XP/2003 service version doesnt update the clock when nobody is logged in? A. Use the setting->control panel->services to edit Tardiss startup settings. Set the Tardis service to run under the Administrator account

Q. How do I set up Tardis as a server? A. Tardis can both act as a server for other time clients. Tardis is set up to always act as a server. You don't need to do anything but run it. Both clients and server machines need to have TCP/IP installed. On client machines set the hostname or IP address ( something like 123.45.67.89) of the server as the source of time information. You can even set Tardis to use itself as a server by setting the time source as localhost or 127.0.0.1. Not very useful but it does demonstrate the technique. When the client accesses the server the relevant service indicator on the server's dialog should blink RED to show that the server is being accessed. (Not on the Service version)
