born by the name of Julia McWilliams on August 15, 1912 in Pasadena California. She was the oldest out of three siblings and was given funky nicknames throughout her childhood. Her father John McWilliams graduated from Princeton and was an investor in California real estate. Julia Childs mother Julia Carolyn Weston was a paper company heiress and her father served as a lieutenant governor of Massachusetts. Julia Childs family accumulated a lot of wealth during her childhood so she was more fortunate than others. She attended San Franciscos elite Katherine Branson School for Girls. Julia Child stood at 6 feet 2 inches; it was told that she was the tallest student in her class. Julia Child was known as a wild child and a prankster. She was also athletic and adventurous where she was talented in tennis, golf and game hunting. In 1930 Julia Child enrolled at Smith College in Northampton Massachusetts where she wanted to become a writer. She submitted some of her writings but they were never published. She then moved to New York and worked for a home furnishing company W&J Sloane but was fired for gross insubordination. In 1941 Julia Child moved to Washington D.C, she volunteered to be a research assistant for the Office of Strategic Services. While playing a key role in the communication of top secret documents between the U.S government Julia Started a relationship with a fellow OSS employee; Paul Child. Paul Child was ten years older than Julia. He was an artist, poet, traveled the world and spoke flawless French. In the summer of 1946 Julia and Paul child traveled across

the country together. Paul described Julia as wildly emotional and an extremely sloppy thinker. They then got married on September of 1946. Julia Childs first experience with classical French cuisine was when Paul too her to the oldest restaurant in the country of Paris; La Couronne. At that point Julia Child fell in love with classical French cuisine. In 1948 Julia Child attended Le Cordon Bleu Cooking School. Julia studied French and roamed open markets talking to fruit sellers, bakers and fish mongers. Julia was also granted private lessons with Master Chef Max Bugnard. Julia then met two women in Paris writing a cookbook aimed at Americans and they needed an American collaborator. For ten years Julia child focused more on writing and spent moths perfecting recipes that involved one ingredient. She submitted their manuscript and the publisher turned it down twice until then she ran across a new publisher by the name of Alfred Knopf. In 1961 Mastering the Art of French Cooking. was finally published and it took ten years to do so. Julia Child moved back to Massachusetts where she was asked to appear on a show called Ive Been Reading produced by WGBH a Boston Public TV station. Julia child Arrived to the show with a giant whisk, eggs, a hot plate and made an omelet. Many viewers tuned in and wanted to see more. By the end of 1965 Julia Child was carried by 96 PBS stations and 200,000 copies of Mastering the Art of French Cooking were sold. In 1965 Julia child won a Peabody and in 1966 she won an Emmy. She also appeared on Time Magazine in an American Food article Everyones in the Kitchen in December 1996. During Julias peak of success her health slowly declined. She was told she had to have a routine biopsy for a full radical mastectomy where she stayed ten days in the hospital. In 1970 after four years of being off air, she returned with a new show The French Chef but this time in color. Paul Child during Julias success became severely ill he had a coronary bypass and during the surgery he suffered from numerous small strokes. Although Julia loved her husband very much she had no time for

lamenting so she moved on with her career. In 1983 20 years after the airing of The French Chef, she was casted the role of a glamorous hostess in Dinner at Julias this was something her fans found disappointing and disconcerting. But all Julia could really do was shrug it off, she then wrote a new big cookbook, The Way to Cook with a home video series. In the late 70s and 80s Julia had four new series Cooking with Master Chefs. In Julias Kitchen with Master Chefs, Jacques and Julia at Home and Baking with Julia. Om Julia Childs 80th birthday three parties were thrown in her honor in Boston, Los Angeles and New York. In 1993 Julia Child was the first woman inducted into the Culinary Institute Hall of Fame and she received the highest honor in France the Legion dHonneur. In 1989 Paul Child was staying in a nursing home and on May 12, 1994 he passed away. Julia Child still stayed in the house her and Paul shared together but in November 2001 she moved to Santa Barbara and her kitchen was moved to Washington D.C. In 2002 Julias kitchen, pots and knives were on display in the Smithsonians National Museum of American History. Julia Child died two days before her 92nd birthday on August 31, 2004 due to kidney failure. After her death her great nephew helped publish Julias last book My Life in France which became a best seller. In 2009 a film but the name of Julie & Julia went into theaters. The movie was based on Julia Childs life and her influence on an aspiring cook Julie Powell. Julia Child made it ok to love cooking and to have a sense of pride while cooking. She inspired many women to take honor in what they were sought out to do generations before. Her mission was to get women into professional kitchens.
